MLB Injury Report – What a Busy Weekend!

Welcome to the Fantrax MLB injury report for Monday, September 15, 2024. In today’s edition, Ozzie Albies, Tyler Glasnow, Clayton Kershaw, and Matt McLain all have what are believed to be season-ending injuries from which they won’t return. Meanwhile, Bo Bichette, Hunter Greene, Justin Steele, and Reese Olson all made strides forward and look to be returning sooner rather than later. That and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fanrax.

MLB Injury Report

Paul Sewald – RP Arizona Diamondbacks (neck)

This all but ends any hope of Sewald being the team’s full-time closer before the end of the season. He is someone who can be safely dropped in all redraft leagues.

Ozzie Albies – 2B Atlanta Braves (wrist)

This report came after the one that stated how much progress he was making and that he could bat right-handed. At the end of the day, it’s hard to project a return for Albies, especially with the resilient Braves battling for a Wild Card spot. One would guess that he is done for the year, as time is running out and the initial reports from the day of the injury stated that a final-week return would be advantageous.

Jordan Westburg – 2B Baltimore Orioles (hand)

Westburg worked through baseball activities before every game this weekend and has had no setbacks as of yet. The hope is that he can return before the end of the season and give the Orioles a much-needed offensive and morale boost. He is trending toward doing so.

Justin Steele – SP Chicago Cubs (elbow)

It was good news for Steele this weekend as he was able to throw a bullpen session. He will likely try to do so one more time, and if all of the symptoms of his elbow tendinitis have dissipated, there’s a good chance that we see him pitch again for the Cubs at least once more in 2024. They are trying to finish with the final Wild Card spot and time is running out, but there’s no doubt that they are better off with Steele on the mound.

Matt McLain – INF Cincinnati Reds (side)

And thus ends a very disappointing calendar year for McLain, who will finish the season without registering an at-bat or being activated. He remains someone to stash in dynasty leagues and someone to remember in drafts next year.

Jeimer Candelario – 1B Cincinnati Reds (foot)

Candelario’s toe has not gotten better and the pain continues to linger. He will finish the season on the Injured List.

Hunter Greene – SP Cincinnati Reds (elbow)

It’s important to note that Greene’s BP was not delayed for anything but matters that were out of their hands. It’s also important that five days later puts it at next Sunday as a possibility to start. Take notes.

Steven Kwan – OF Cleveland Guardians (back)

Kwan’s absence on Friday was originally labeled as “body fatigue” but later changed to this, which is more concerning. Once the results of the tests are revealed, his future for the rest of the season will be better known. If he does need to go on the Injured List, it will be a major blow to the Guardians who are trying to win the AL Central.

Reese Olson – SP Detroit Tigers (shoulder)

Be prepared.

Ben Joyce – RP Los Angeles Angels (shoulder)

The good news is that surgery is off the table for now, and rest will be what’s recommended throughout the offseason. If the condition worsens, then he will likely require surgery to fix it. For now, though, it’s good news relative to the condition and the results that could have been.

Clayton Kershaw – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (toe)

The Dodgers are running out of options for pitchers to start in these important games. While the schedule is in their favor, they still have work to do to ensure that they win the NL West and not succumb to the Wild Card.

Tyler Glasnow – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (elbow)

Glasnow will shut things down for the rest of the regular season and prepare to pitch in the postseason. As stated, this is a big blow to a team that is reeling.

Francisco Lindor – SS New York Mets (back)

Lindor has been battling through back soreness all weekend long, and his return to the lineup yesterday was premature. He didn’t look comfortable at all during the game and it remains to be seen if he did more damage to himself by playing instead of sitting out an extra game.

Starling Marte – OF New York Mets (forearm)

Marte was hit by a pitch on Saturday and received X-rays to determine the damage. The good news is that all reports came back negative, though he did miss yesterday’s game as a result. It remains to be seen if and when he will return, though he is not expected to go on the Injured List.

Oneil Cruz – SS/OF Pittsburgh Pirates (ankle)

Cruz tried to play through this injury, but ultimately needed to be pulled when it stiffened up on him. The team starts a series against the Cardinals today, so there’s a good chance that he misses some or all of that considering he is a big part of their future and that the Pirates are out of contention for the postseason. Hopefully we have updates before opening pitch today.

San Diego Padres – Team Update

From a fantasy perspective, Has-Seong Kim (shoulder) being able to ramp up his throwing intensity is a big hurdle to leap. His progress had been slowed by his inability to do so, but now that he will be throwing, there is a good chance that he will return before the end of the season. He may need some at-bats to regain his timing and test out his shoulder, but that can surely be done in-house with some simulated at-bats.

San Francisco Giants – Team Update

From a fantasy perspective, Tyler Fitzgerald (back) looks to be on his way back to the Giants’ lineup on Tuesday with no structural damage to report. He will give them a nice offensive boost and look to finish his breakout season on a high note. As for Robbie Ray (hamstring), he continues to throw high-quantity bullpen sessions with no reports of any setbacks or problems. Chances are he will be reinstated later this week when there is an opening in the rotation.

Bo Bichette – SS Toronto Blue Jays (calf)

Bichette has been raking throughout his rehab assignment, though he did not play on Sunday. Still, he is looking more and more like the player we’ve known for years.

Toronto Blue Jays – Team Update

Both Daulton Varsho (shoulder) and Joey Loperfido (hip) are considered DTD with no talk yet of them heading to the Injured List. The Blue Jays are off today, so that gives them some scheduling to manipulate.
