All of that and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report
Jacob deGrom – SP Texas Rangers (elbow)
Jacob deGrom said today he’s confident that he will pitch & contribute to this Rangers team this season after his 45 pitch throwing session Tuesday
— Evan Grant (@Evan_P_Grant) July 30, 2024
This was a big day for deGrom, as he was able to increase his workload to 45 pitches. He will likely advance to live batters soon before heading out for a rehab assignment. Conservatively speaking, he likely has another two weeks before that rehab assignment which will be a lengthy one. While he does expect to contribute in 29024, the capacity of that contribution is filled with questions. Will he start or will it be in a relief role? Will it be one appearance? Despite the unknown, it’s important to note that he is headed in the right direction.
Evan Carter – OF Texas Rangers (back)
Chris Young says the Rangers are not expecting that Evan Carter will play again this regular season. He simply needs more time to rest the back. That's only way to say it
— Evan Grant (@Evan_P_Grant) July 30, 2024
Carter hasn’t been bouncing back in the way that the team had hoped. He was going to see a specialist regarding his situation, though it’s unclear if this proclamation of his not returning was the result of any diagnosis. Regardless, it’s fair to expect him to remain on the Injured List for the remainder of 2024 and hopefully bounce back next year. His offseason will be one to monitor to see if surgery is on the table.
Gerrit Cole – SP New York Yankees (fatigue)
Cole said he’s not dealing with an arm issue. He’s just tired. He said he could’ve pitched tonight but was given the option to push his start back so they went with that. He expects to start this weekend against the Blue Jays. https://t.co/1uxHFrhMLf

The team said that Cole hasn’t bounced back the way that he usually has. Cole himself also said that this is similar to his own Spring Training, as he’s only had a few starts, hence the fatigue. It’s important to note that he has been under the weather with a stomach bug lately, so that caveat could be contributing to his condition. All in all, the team made it known quite clearly that this is not an arm issue, which should give fantasy owners some solace going forward.
Christian Walker – 1B Arizona Diamondbacks (oblique)
Christian Walker says he hopes he can be back in action in “three weeks-ish” after being diagnosed with a low-grade left oblique strain.
— Nick Piecoro (@nickpiecoro) July 30, 2024
Walker has been placed on the Injured List for a Grade 1 oblique strain and will miss most of August. The estimated three-week absence would put him ahead of schedule here, as these types of injuries typically take about a month of recovery. Regardless, the team dodged a bullet here as it was only a low-grade injury and nothing major. Additionally, they were savvy and on-point here, trading for Josh Bell before the trade deadline. Nice work here by the Diamondbacks.
Mike Trout – OF Los Angeles Angels (knee)
Mike Trout had a setback in his rehab, Perry Minasian said.
He declined to say what the setback was.
On if he can come back this season: “We’ll see.”
— Sam Blum (@SamBlum3) July 30, 2024
A very unfortunate development here, as Trout’s setback may cost him the remainder of the season. With the team out of contention and in a rebuild, it’s quite possible that this is a season-ending ailment and that both he and the team reboot for 2025. Overall, there was a very ominous undertone to this announcement that made it feel significantly negative.
Mason Miller – SP/RP Oakland Athletics (hand)
Mason Miller has a cast on his left hand but threw a bullpen session today. A's GM David Forst said Miller was up to 95 mph and is hopeful he can return "very quickly" once the cast is off.
— Martín Gallegos (@MartinJGallegos) July 31, 2024
The good news here is that Miller was out there throwing, and doing so at a high level and velocity. A reminder that his fractured finger is on his non-throwing hand, so this was also about keeping his arm fresh and ready to go. It would seem like the hardest part of any in-game performance would be putting a glove on the hand with the fractured finger.
Jared Jones – SP Pittsburgh Pirates (lat)
Jared Jones threw a bullpen today. Two ups, 38 pitches, threw everything in his arsenal.
I asked him how his velocity was.
His response: “Fuckin’ electric.”
— Noah Hiles (@_NoahHiles) July 31, 2024
Jones looked and felt good in his latest step in recovery. He’s slated to throw a live batting practice session this weekend and hopefully go out for a rehab assignment shortly after. All in all, it was a good day for him as he seemed on the right track to be back.
Victor Robles – OF Seattle Mariners (hip)
Victor Robles has been dealing with a hip issue, which is why he left tonight’s game late, Scott Servais just said. It sounds like he’ll be out of the starting lineup tomorrow, too.
— Daniel Kramer (@DKramer_) July 31, 2024
Robles had been having a mini breakout as of late, providing five-category production in his limited time on the field. The hope is that he can overcome this injury and return to being the surprisingly solid option.
Nolan Jones – OF Colorado Rockies (back)

— Minor League Baseball (@MiLB) July 31, 2024
Jones finished the game 1-for-4 with that home run as the team’s DH. He will likely need to play in the field in at least one game before returning to the Rockies.
Alejandro Kirk – C Toronto Blue Jays (elbow)
Alejandro Kirk, hit on the left elbow T6, leaves game bottom half. Brian Serven takes over and Blue Jays are very thin at catcher now after trading Danny Jansen.
Earlier this week, John Schneider mentioned Phil Clarke at triple-A Buffalo as a possibility if they needed someone.
— Shi Davidi (@ShiDavidi) July 31, 2024
There was no word after the game as to the extent of the injury, but as noted, the Jays have inexperienced options at catcher for however long Kirk will be out of commission.
Francisco Alvarez – C New York Mets (shoulder)
Carlos Mendoza says Francisco Alvarez (shoulder) is "feeling better" but he just wanted to give him an extra day off & shares his impressions of Jesse Winker in his first game with the #Mets pic.twitter.com/ngVE2X93EM
— New York Post Sports (@nypostsports) July 30, 2024
It looks like Alvarez is on the verge of returning, as the team just wanted to give him additional time to rest. As for when he will return, chances are he won’t land on the Injured List, but anything is possible.
