Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Monday, July 8, 2024. In today’s edition, Julio Rodriguez had himself a wild weekend with some ups and downs, Yordan Alvarez is in a significant amount of pain, and the Phillies are ready to welcome back two of their best hitters. All of that and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report for Monday, July 8, 2024.
Julio Rodriguez – OF Seattle Mariners (quad)
Julio Rodríguez’s MRI showed “nothing out of the ordinary,” Scott Servais just said, adding that they’d like to avoid using him today but that it’s possible he could be available to pinch-hit.
— Daniel Kramer (@DKramer_) July 7, 2024
Rodriguez felt the pain during the top of the first inning of Saturday’s game and was immediately replaced. After some time it was revealed that it was he who brought this ailment to the attention of the team’s medical staff. As such, he may have saved himself from further injury by not attempting to play through it. Instead, he was available to pinch-hit yesterday and got on base with an HBP. He was replaced with a pinch-runner as the team didn’t want him to attempt to run. It remains to be seen where both he and the team go from here, but he may be able to avoid a trip to the Injured List.
Bryan Woo – SP Seattle Mariners (hamstring)
Bryan Woo threw 45 pitches yesterday at High-A Everett, and he’s here at T-Mobile Park today.
Scott Servais said that they’re unsure if he’ll need another rehab outing. The Mariners want to ensure he can go at least 4-5 innings before activating him.
— Daniel Kramer (@DKramer_) July 7, 2024
The Mariners seem close to reinstating Woo, who is eligible to return this week. Whether or not he pitches this week likely hinges on if it’s determined that he’ll need another rehab start. He gave up two runs on one hit and two walks over 2.2 innings in his last start, but the Mariners may want to see more out of him.
Yordan Alvarez – OF Houston Astros (knee)
Yordan Alvarez’s knee is still “pretty sore” from the hit-by-pitch yesterday, Joe Espada said. Alvarez is getting treatment and might try to hit in the cage.
— Matt Kawahara (@matthewkawahara) July 7, 2024
Alvarez looked to be in considerable pain after getting hit by a pitch on Saturday. He revealed afterward that the spot on his inflamed knee was the same place where he was hit a few weeks ago and that it had not yet fully healed. It’s interesting to note that he has been playing through an injury, yet he has been doing so well at the plate. It’s likely a 50/50 shot that he heads to the Injured List, and with so little time until the All-Star Break, it might be what’s best.
Philadelphia Phillies – Team Update
Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber just finished running the bases again. Schwarber already running at 100 percent. Harper looked to be running at 100 percent.
Schwarber is expected to be activated on Tuesday. Harper remains in play to be activated on Tuesday.
— Todd Zolecki (@ToddZolecki) July 7, 2024
It looks as if both Kyle Schwarber (groin) and Bryce Harper (hamstring) are ready to return this week. Both will be welcomed back to a Phillies team that went 5-4 in the nine games they were missing.
Carlos Correa – SS Minnesota Twins (finger)
Good news: Carlos Correa left the game with a right finger contusion. Initial scans did not reveal a fracture.
— Bobby Nightengale (@nightengalejr) July 7, 2024
Correa got hit by a pitch during his first at-bat and left the game with what was later revealed to be a contusion on his finger. It remains to be seen if he will return to the lineup today, but he himself was adamant that he would suit up and play. While that is very admirable of him, his swelling would need to go down in order for that to happen.
David Bednar – RP Pittsburgh Pirates (oblique)
* Anticipates closer David Bednar, who threw live BP yesterday, to go to Indy to pitch on rehab assignment.
* LHP Ryan Borucki "looks really good" on his rehab assignment. Wants him to pitch back-to-back games, anticipates at least one more outing in Indy.— Kevin Gorman (@KevinGormanPGH) July 7, 2024
Good news here with respect to Bednar, who looks to be in the final stages of his recovery. He threw multiple bullpen sessions this past week and the reports have him throwing up to 21 pitches at a time. While this seems to be all good news, some caution needs to be addressed, as oblique injuries are tricky and tend to take longer than this before a complete healing. There is a sense of this process being rushed.
Devin Williams – RP Milwaukee Brewers (back)
"One day at a time" got Devin Williams this far, and it will remain his approach going into the next big milestone in his comeback (with a fun anecdote about how he learned he's throwing live BP on Tuesday). ⤵️ https://t.co/sNQxsQQupe
— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) July 7, 2024
This is fantastic news as Williams continues to progress. He has thrown multiple bullpen sessions since his initial mound throw and now he seems ready to begin throwing to batters. The team has been targeting the end of this month as a goal for him to return, though they have also maintained that they will not rush him back either.
Blake Snell – SP San Francisco Giants (groin)
The Giants have Blake Snell slotted in to start on Tuesday vs Toronto followed by Webb and Hicks.
— Shayna Rubin (@ShaynaRubin) July 7, 2024
It looks like Snell will try to get his season on track beginning tomorrow against the Blue Jays.
Tommy Edman – INF/OF St. Louis Cardinals (wrist)
#STLCards manager Oli Marmol said CF/SS Tommy Edman came through his two days of BP well — the second one a “live”session against teammate Riley O’Brien — and is still on schedule to play for Double-A Springfield on Tuesday.
— John Denton (@JohnDenton555) July 7, 2024
Edman will make his long-awaited move to Double-A Springfield for a rehab assignment. This was a long time coming, as he has been recovering slowly from offseason wrist surgery. There is no timetable for a return here and the team will likely take things slowly.
Lars Nootbaar – OF St. Louis Cardinals (oblique)
Showing no ill effects from the oblique strain he suffered in late May and steadily regaining his timing, outfielder Lars Nootbaar could soon rejoin the #STLCards — possibly as early as Monday in Washington, DC.https://t.co/nHPrVWJNhU
— John Denton (@JohnDenton555) July 7, 2024
While in his rehab assignment, Nootbaar only has four hits in seventeen at-bats, but two of them have been home runs. He also has six walks and six strikeouts. Look for him to be activated very soon. Be prepared.
Parker Meadows – OF Detroit Tigers (hamstring)
A.J. Hinch on Parker Meadows' exit in the 8th inning: "I don't love what I heard from the get-go in talking to him and our trainers…It's something with the hamstring. That's always alarming." https://t.co/KXyEfoioO0
— Evan Woodbery (@evanwoodbery) July 7, 2024
Meadows had recently received a promotion back to the Tigers, so this injury is a major disappointment. Specific details about what happens next should be revealed today, but the outlook isn’t good.
Anthony Rendon – 3B Los Angeles Angels (hamstring)
Anthony Rendon (hamstring) faced live pitching on Friday and Saturday and he could be activated from the IL tomorrow, Ron Washington said. Plan is to start him at third and then DH him the next day. And continue that pattern until he's ready for everyday action at third.
— Rhett Bollinger (@RhettBollinger) July 7, 2024
Rendon has missed most of the season after tearing his hamstring in April. Given his injury history, it is somewhat surprising to see him return as soon as this. That said, he will slot into the lineup and receive everyday at-bats for as long as he can stay healthy.
Eduardo Rodriguez – SP Arizona Diamondbacks (shoulder)
Eduardo Rodriguez’s most recent follow-up MRI came back clean, Torey Lovullo said. He is likely to throw a bullpen session in the coming days.
— Nick Piecoro (@nickpiecoro) July 6, 2024
This was a big day for Rodriguez and the Diamondbacks, who were awaiting these results and got exactly what they had hoped for. Now they can begin the next step toward a full recovery with a bullpen session before a regular and gradual progression to full health.
Cincinnati Reds – Team Update
David Bell pregame Saturday:
* Nick Lodolo threw a side today, on track for Tuesday return from IL and start vs. Rockies
* Matt McLain will begin baseball activities soon after reaching his latest progression in rehab. Will be around a little bit more, but still based in AZ.
*…— Mike Petraglia (@Trags) July 6, 2024
A big update here with a lot of fantasy ramifications. First, Nick Lodolo (finger) looks to be returning tomorrow in a premium matchup against the Rockies. Be prepared. As for Matt McLain (shoulder), he has been cleared to resume baseball activities, which is a big step forward for him. He still has a long way to go, but it’s fair to expect him to begin a rehab assignment by the end of July if all goes well. Finally, Jeimer Candelario (hamstring, knee) has been managing his lower-body tendinitis, and likely cannot wait for the All-Star Break where he can rest.
