Here is the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Monday, May 6, 2024. In today’s edition, the word of the day is a hamstring, as many players injured theirs over the weekend: Trea Turner, Wyatt Langford, and Steven Kwan, to name a few. All of that and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report for Monday, May 6, 2024.
George Kirby – SP Seattle Mariners (knee)
This is an interesting development to an injury that seemingly popped up out of nowhere. While the results have yet to be revealed, this is somewhat concerning despite how unconcerned the team actually is. Any ongoing injuries can only get worse when a player pitches every fifth day. Stay tuned for the results.
Trea Turner – SS Philadelphia Phillies (hamstring)
Trea Turner said he expects to miss at least six weeks with his hamstring injury and any return before that “would be a win.” Obviously, big blow for Phillies.
— Matt Gelb (@MattGelb) May 4, 2024
Less than 24 hours after Turner himself said that he expected to miss a day or two, it was revealed that he would miss at least six weeks of action. This timeline seems more like a best-case scenario for him, as from the sounds of things, it’s not expected that he will beat that timeline. It’s a very unfortunate loss for the Phillies who will be without one of their best players for quite a while. Any setbacks here, and we could see him back after the All-Star Break.
Wyatt Langford – OF Texas Rangers (hamstring)
Bruce Bochy announced that Wyatt Langford, the Rangers' No. 1 prospect, will be placed on the injured list with a right hamstring strain. The timetable is 3 to 4 weeks.
A corresponding move will be made tomorrow before the game in Oakland.
— Jackson Stone (@Jackson_Stoneee) May 5, 2024
Bochy made the announcement that Langford will miss a month or so because of a hamstring strain that was slightly higher than a Grade 1. The rookie had struggled to get going this season, and this setback will only push any development back further.
Joey Wiemer – OF Milwaukee Brewers (knee), Christian Yelich – OF Milwaukee Brewers (back)
Brewers injury updates:
-Joey Wiemer looking at 2 to 3 weeks with the knee injury. No surgery needed.
-Christian Yelich is progressing well this weekend. He’s been swinging the bat as well as throwing and running.— Curt Hogg (@CyrtHogg) May 5, 2024
Wiemer will miss at least two weeks for his popliteus muscle, which buckled up while trying to retrieve a ball on Friday. The good news is that no surgery is required for this and that he may be okay with rest. As for Yelich, his back seemingly felt better after a batting session last week, and that might be just what he needs in order to return.
Steven Kwan – OF Cleveland Guardians (hamstring)
Source: The Guardians are expected to add Kyle Manzardo to the roster on Monday, with Steven Kwan landing on the 10-day IL
— Zack Meisel (@ZackMeisel) May 5, 2024
The results of the MRI have yet to be released, though it is somewhat concerning that they have already announced their impending move. The hope is that it is mild enough that he can only miss the minimum amount of games before returning. That being said, all eyes will be on Kyle Manzardo, who comes with a ton of prospect pedigree.
Evan Phillips – RP Los Angeles Dodgers (hamstring)
#Dodgers activated right-handed pitcher Blake Treinen from the injured list and placed right-handed pitcher Evan Phillips on the injured list with a right hamstring strain, retro 5/4.
— Kirsten Watson (@kirsten_watson) May 5, 2024
Phillips will miss at least the next two weeks with a strain of his hamstring. It was revealed that this is of the Grade 1 variety, so the concern is minimal. In the meantime, Daniel Hudson is the favorite to land some save opportunities, though nothing has been solidified just yet.

Smiles all around here as O’Hoppe’s swelling went down overnight alongside a clean MRI. With a scheduled day off yesterday, look for him to return to the lineup soon enough.
Kodai Senga – SP New York Mets (shoulder)
Kodai Senga threw 32 pitches in live BP yesterday. The Mets will see how these next few days go before deciding whether he needs another live or whether he can start a rehab assignment with a minor league affiliate.
— Abbey Mastracco (@AbbeyMastracco) May 5, 2024
Senga throwing 32 pitches was a big deal for him and the Mets as he was able to do so against live batters. How he fares in the coming days will be a telling sign for him going forward. If he is in pain, or somewhat sore, the team may have to slow things down a bit. That being said, everyone seems encouraged, including Senga, who has been aiming for May 27 as his target date for a 2024 debut.
Jose Urquidy – SP Houston Astros (forearm), Cristian Javier – SP Houston Astros (neck)
Regarding Cristian Javier, Astros general manager Dana Brown told @AstrosRadioMLB that "the goal is to get him back by at least the Detroit series." José Urquidy will have "two or three rehab starts" after his next live BP before he can return, Brown said.
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) May 5, 2024
Urquidy is on his way to the final stages of his recovery from a forearm muscle strain that has sidelined him since mid-March. The hope is that he can return by the end of May. As for Javier, be prepared.
Nick Pivetta – SP Boston Red Sox (elbow)
Alex Cora says Kutter Crawford will start Tuesday in Atlanta and “if all goes well” it’ll be Nick Pivetta on Wednesday against…….. Chris Sale.
— Gabrielle Starr (@gfstarr1) May 5, 2024
Good news for a team that desperately needs some.
Garrett Whitlock – SP Boston Red Sox (oblique)
Red Sox' Garrett Whitlock (left oblique strain) threw a bullpen Saturday. “This is just the beginning of the throwing progression,” Cora said. “So probably a few more bullpens, live (BP). With him it was longer than expected so of course a rehab start, maybe two.”
— Christopher Smith (@SmittyOnMLB) May 4, 2024
Whitlock still has a ways to go, but it’s good to see him having cleared the first stage. Still, obliques are a tricky injury to manage, but six weeks seems like a safe floor when determining a timeline. If that is the case here, then a return in June seems possible.
Paul Sewald – RP Arizona Diamondbacks (oblique)
Both Sewald and the team are feeling optimistic that he can and will make his 2024 debut tomorrow. Be prepared.
Alek Thomas – OF Arizona Diamondbacks (hamstring)
Over the weekend, Thomas went 3-for-12 with one double and twelve runs batted in. It remains to be seen if that is enough to warrant a return to Arizona.
Eduardo Rodriguez – SP Arizona Diamondbacks (shoulder)
Eduardo Rodriguez will undergo an MRI this week to see how his injured lat is progressing, Torey Lovullo said. Rodriguez told Lovullo he was feeling good. If the MRI comes back clean, Rodriguez could begin his throwing program shortly thereafter.
— Nick Piecoro (@nickpiecoro) May 5, 2024
The team admitted last week that they made a mistake in handling his injury when it first happened. Chances are that they slow-play whatever the diagnosis is to ensure that they don’t rush him back. Stay tuned either way.
Joe Musgrove – SP San Diego Padres (tricep)
Not all good news happening for Padres.
Joe Musgrove (right elbow inflammation) has been placed on the 15-day IL. Said to be a "precationary" move. The issue is triceps tendonitis.
Randy Vasquez has been recalled, presumably to start Tuesday in Chicago.— Kevin Acee (@sdutKevinAcee) May 5, 2024
Musgrove will miss the next two weeks with what is being described as a precautionary move. He has struggled all year to get going, and this only sets him back even further. The hope is that he can get himself healthy enough to be the successful pitcher we have seen in the past.
Esteury Ruiz – OF Oakland Athletics (wrist)
Esteury Ruiz is going for an MRI tomorrow on his left wrist with the way he landed on a diving catch in the outfield yesterday. Mark Kotsay was asked if he was unavailable today. He added he wouldn't say Ruiz is unavailable, but it's dependent upon the situation.
— Jessica Kleinschmidt (@KleinschmidtJD) May 5, 2024
Stay tuned, but this doesn’t sound promising.
Gerrit Cole – SP New York Yankees (elbow)
Gerrit Cole threw 15 pitches off a mound today, his first bullpen session since he was shut down from throwing back in March.
Cole was giddy talking about it. He said he was looking forward to this step for a long time, his first taste of pitching in an extended stretch.
— Max Goodman (@MaxTGoodman) May 4, 2024
This was a big day for Cole and the Yankees. The hope is that now that he has thrown from a mound, he can increase the intensity and quantity of pitches thrown. They must be careful not to overload him at first because any setback here could cost him the season. That being said, this was a very good sign for him.
