MLB Injury Report: Young Power Arm Headed to the IL

Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Monday, August 26, 2024. In today’s edition, Robbie Ray will get an MRI to determine the extent of his ailing hamstring, the Braves finally get some good injury news as the hand of Michael Harris II has no fractures, and the Cardinals have an intriguing option at catcher behind Willson Contreras who is out with a fractured finger of his own. All of that and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report

Robbie Ray – SP San Francisco Giants (hamstring)

As mentioned here, Ray will undergo an MRI later today to help diagnose his ailing hamstring. It’s unclear if this is as serious as feared, but it will need to be taken care of for the Giants to make the playoffs this season. His next outing isn’t projected to be until next weekend, so he does have some time to heal before then. Stay tuned.

Michael Harris II – OF Atlanta Braves (hand)

Harris was hit in the hand by a pitch in yesterday’s game and was forced to leave early due to the pain. There was some fear that this could lead to a fracture, but alas, there is finally some good news for the Braves concerning injuries. While this doesn’t necessarily mean that he will be back soon, it does indicate that there is no breakage and that he should be able to get back to a game soon enough, depending on the amount of swelling that’s happening.

Xavier Edwards – INF Miami Marlins (back)

Despite the negative MRI, it would appear that Xavier Edwards will not only be placed on the Injured List but also miss this upcoming four-game series at Colorado, which is a very enticing matchup for all Marlins players. The move has yet to be made official, but many signs are pointing in this direction.

Liam Hendriks – RP Boston Red Sox (elbow)

These were the first two strikeouts Hendriks has posted in his third rehab outing. He has thrown only two innings of work over these three outings, so it would appear that he is being used sparingly and purposefully. It remains to be seen if he will get a full inning of work his next time out there. Regardless, he should see some loe-leverage time with the Red Sox before the end of the season.

Willson Contreras – C St. Louis Cardinals (finger)

Contreras suffered a finger fracture after he was hit by a pitch on his hand on Saturday, and the move came a day later. He will likely miss more than the ten-day minimum, and there is a chance that this is a season-ending injury. In his place, Ivan Herrera gets a full-time opportunity to play, and to show that his swing changes in the minor leagues are for real.

Cedric Mullins – OF Baltimore Orioles (quad)

Mullins has missed the last two games with an injury that he sustained on Friday. Seeing him participate in batting practice sessions seems like a good indication that he could be back in the lineup sooner, rather than later.

Joey Bart – C Pittsburgh Pirates (hamstring)

Bart injured his hamstring while trying to beat out a groundball to first base yesterday. He came up limp and was in considerable pain afterward. He will miss at least the next ten days trying to recover from this, and his hot bat will be missed in the lineup. As mentioned, Henry Davis will get another chance to shine this season.

Hunter Greene – SP Cincinnati Reds (elbow)

All things considered, this is very good news. The team was concerned more about the long-term ramifications of this ailment, as any time the elbow is involved, one can’t help but think about the future. As such, with no damage to his UCL, it’s all about rest and rehabbing while the swelling hopefully goes away. All that being said, he will be shut down for two weeks before throwing again. From there, it will be determined what the next steps will be, but by then, the team may choose to shut him down for the season or try to ramp him back up with a rehab assignment for the final two weeks of the season. Essentially, this is all about his dynasty stock remaining high, but just to be clear, his redraft stock remains low.

Jacob deGrom – SP Texas Rangers (elbow)

It looks like deGrom is being given a start every fifth day, as he last pitched on Thursday. He will look to improve upon his first dominant outing where he threw hard and did so for two innings of work over 29 pitches tossed.

Yordan Alvarez – OF Houston Astros (neck)

Alvarez was not used in last night’s game, but the news is good nonetheless, as it would appear that the injury keeping him out of action has all but healed.

Yoshinobu Yamamoto – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (tricep)

This will be the first of many rehab starts for Yamamoto, who will look to return to the Dodgers by the middle of September.

Casey Mize – SP Detroit Tigers (hamstring)

Mize has now thrown in four rehab outings, and his workload and strikeouts have gone up in each of them. There is a good chance that he returns this upcoming week, as mentioned, though if the Tigers decide to give him one more rehab start, he should be up next week.

Yu Darvish – SP San Diego Padres )elbow)

This was a fantastic step forward from his 27-pitch bullpen session on Friday. While a simulated game is not an actual in-game situation, it’s still a close way to help determine where a pitcher is and to give him a chance to throw as he would within a game itself. It would appear that Darvish is close to returning, though the team has yet to announce any plans.
