Outfield Risers
- Nick Castellanos is a player I was very high on coming into this season. He started the 2020 season on an MVP caliber pace before eventually slowing down in September. Castellanos was always dominant in Detroit but lacked home run power, mostly due to his home ballpark. When he was traded to Chicago and eventually signed with the Reds that offseason, I was thrilled. I thought Castellanos was ready to go into full breakout mode. So far in 2021, Castellanos has nine home runs to go with a .324/.360/.648 slash line. This has caused Castellanos to move way up my rankings.
- Byron Buxton looks like the player we have all waited on since his elite prospect days. Last season, Buxton had a power breakout hitting 13 home runs over 130 plate appearances. His previous career-high was 16 in 462 plate appearances. The power has carried over into 2021 as Buxton has nine home runs in just 85 plate appearances to go with four stolen bases. His .388/.429/.824 slash is incredibly strong, and his 1.246 OPS trails just Mike Trout. If Buxton can stay healthy, he can put himself in the MVP conversation. Buxton has moved up nearly 100 spots in my overall dynasty rankings.
Byron Buxton fWAR watch…
Single-season career high: 3.6 (140 games played in 2017)
2020: 1.2 (39 games played)
So far in 2021: 2.3 (21 games played)

Outfield Fallers
- Ian Happ was a popular breakout pick for 2021, and for a good reason. Unfortunately, Happ’s dreadful start to the season has been slowed down by an injury after colliding with Nico Hoerner. Maybe some time off will be good for Happ. Through 84 at-bats, Happ has a .167/.307/.250 slash line. He’s hit just two home runs and stole one base, leaving many fantasy owners considering dropping him. Happ is a huge faller down my rankings.
- Cavan Biggio is another player who has struggled in 2021. He has always been more valuable in OBP dynasty formats, but there is not much of anything to write home about with Biggio. He has hit two home runs and has not stolen a base. His slugging percentage is just .001 points higher than his OBP. His current slash sits at .185/.295/.296, and there is not much to like under the hood. His statcast page looks rough and does not give much hope for Biggio to rebound strong. I do think he will get going, but he has fallen down my rankings.
