Al Melchior’s Bold Predictions

With nearly all of my drafts and auctions in the rear view mirror, it's time to tally up the players who wound up on my rosters again and again. It's also an opportunity to take note of which players I avoided like an approaching swarm of bees. I'm carrying C.J. Cron, Franchy Cordero and Alex Claudio, among others, on several of my rosters, even though none was burning up the ADP rankings. What, exactly, are my best hopes for these late-round fliers? And what are my worst fears about the players I completely eschewed?…

2018 Dudes and Don’ts: Closers

Well, folks, here we are. It's the end of the line for my 2018 Dudes and Don'ts, and it's my first foray into calling D&Ds at closer. They're an incredibly volatile bunch, and with so many bullpens still unclear as we roll into the season, one call could be completely wrong within a few days of me writing this. All it takes right now is one bad outing for one of the guys vying for a job to bump him way down the closer depth chart. So what the hell, let's have some fun! It is fantasy, after all. To the Dude! The Dude -…

Dynasty Dugout: Top-10 Prospects – AL Teams

It's been a little over a month since we wrapped up my top-100 rankings series. Just one month is all it takes for me to start having prospect withdrawals. So, what better way to feed my addiction than nearly 3,000 words about the fantasy prospects in each American League farm system? Yes, I'm a prospectaholic. Is that so bad? I don't think so. There are a ton of stocked farms systems in the American League. Houston is still producing elite fantasy prospects as quickly as McDonald's produces Big Macs, while Detroit could…

Ryne Milkins’ Bold Predictions

It takes guts to be bold. Or, a ton of luck with a hint of stupidity. Either way, everyone loves a good bold prediction leading up to the regular season. Stats are all at zero, everyone is in "the best shape of their lives" and are ready to prove what they can do in 2018. Sure, there will be a lot of the obvious this year. Mike Trout will be the best player in baseball, Clayton Kershaw the best pitcher, and the New York Yankees will hit a ton of home runs. None of those are bold predictions, though. What makes a prediction…

Statcast Corner: The Introduction

As Statcast data becomes more commonplace in fantasy baseball analysis, we decided to roll out a new weekly series to dig specifically into these metrics and try to uncover helpful trends for fantasy owners. With the season starting this Thursday, March 29, this introductory article will highlight the key themes you will see each week and offer a few nuggets for players I am keeping a close eye on heading into the 2018 season. The headers below will be the repeating sections we explore each week. I anticipate the scope…

Spring Training News and Notes III

This edition could have easily had a Star Wars-inspired titled called Spring Training III: Revenge of the Injury Bug. It seems that a great deal of news this week concerns injuries. This has some wondering if Spring Training is too long. Some feel that, even in a year like this one when it is somewhat shorter than usual because of an early start to the regular season, everyone who was going to get their timing down well enough to make a big league roster has already done so. Therefore, we would be able to bypass the…

Anthony Franco’s Bold Predictions

Bold Predictions Khris Davis eclipses 50 home runs It is unquestioned that Davis is one of the league’s elite power hitters; he has hit 42 and 43 homers, respectively, in the past two seasons. He still seems to be improving, though. Davis became more selective at the plate last season, he trimmed his ground-ball rate a few percentage points, and there seems to be some remaining upside for Davis based on his batted-ball profile. Despite ranking second among qualified hitters in average exit velocity on balls in the air last…

Dynasty Dugout: Pitcher Dynasty/Keeper Rankings

The starting pitcher and relief pitcher positions are the only ones that aren't dominated by young stars in their early-20s like most of the other positions are. Three of the top four starting pitchers are north of 30 years old, while three of the top five relievers are 29 or older. There's nothing wrong that. Most pitchers are usually able to maintain an elite level of production further into their 30s than hitters can. I guess the moral of the story here is not to shy away from older pitchers in their 30s. Other 2018…

Medical Corner: Michael Conforto, Daniel Murphy, and Justin Turner Updates

Dr. Mike Tanner has treated patients with orthopedic injuries for over 10 years as a board-certified specialist and physical therapist. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D., educating physical therapy students and conducting research. Justin Turner, Los Angeles Dodgers The good news is that Turner's fracture is not serious. Non-displaced means the physician did not have to set the bone, and it may not be a complete break. The bad news is that it is on his left, non-throwing wrist, a significant source of a hitter’s power. I…
