TRAX Best Score Draft Recap: Part 2

Here is the recap of the second half of my recent TRAX Best Score draft, along with my thoughts on each pick. To read Part 1 of my recap, click here. Sign up for a TRAX Best Score league here! Round 21, Pick 242 – My pick: Felix Hernandez, SP Felix Hernandez is no longer King, but there are worse best ball gambles. Hernandez’s productivity has greatly declined from his other-worldly 2014, but he’s still just 31 years old. Granted, he’s an “old” 31, but if he can cut down the gopher balls (his FB/HR rate in 2017 was…

2018 Fantasy Baseball Rankings: Relief Pitchers

Everyone seems to have a different approach to drafting closers for their fantasy team. Some like to grab the elite studs at the top, while other punt saves altogether to stock up on starting pitchers. I don't advise punting any category, so as irritating as they are to own at times, closers and select middle relievers are valuable commodities. I know, it makes you want to pull your hair out when they allow five ER in 0.1 innings. We've all been there. But if you attack it right, you can end up with a solid core of…

Ryne Milkins’ Draft Day Targets

Ah, draft season. Aside from the actual baseball season, obviously, draft season is perhaps the most exciting time of the year for fantasy enthusiasts. Records are reset to 0-0, pages of research pile up, and terms like "ADP" and "breakout potential" echo in our heads on a never-ending loop. Of course, there will always be "must draft" guys that consistently come off the board in the first couple of rounds. However, a big part of winning fantasy leagues is grabbing those guys that other people aren't and having them pay off…

2018 Player Profile: Jorge Soler

With spring training getting underway, the 2018 fantasy baseball season is very nearly approaching. Each week, I will be evaluating one player’s stock for this year. This week, a former top prospect coming off a forgettable season, but who presents an interesting buy-low opportunity for 2018. Jorge Soler, Kansas City Royals 2017 statistics: .144/.245/.258, 2 HR, 0 SB General Overview Jorge Soler entered 2017 as a potential breakout player, a former top prospect who, in just over a full season’s worth of playing time from…

Medical Corner: What to Think of Matt Harvey

The Surgery Matt Harvey underwent surgery to correct thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) in 2016. This surgery is a bit more involved than one might guess. For the full description, click here. In short, most of the first rib and portions of muscle near the neck are removed to decrease compression of nerves/blood vessels. For a quick peek, here is a four-second animation of the surgery here. Return to sport is less likely compared to Tommy John surgery, but it can be done. Jamie Garcia and Mike Foltynewicz are prime examples of…

The Baseball Show | S2.E15 Jim Callis [VIDEO]

Episode 15, guest Jim Callis For those of you who regularly view The Baseball Show, you know how important Ralph Lifshitz is to us. Well, without our guest this week Jim Callis (@jimcallisMLB) of MLB Pipeline on MLB.com, there may not be a Prospect Jesus. Show Rundown Jim tells us all about his background, and how he got started (3:18); then discusses his thoughts on the new two-way player phenom (6:20); and how Francisco Mejia's bat will eventually find him a position (8:38); also what he would do if Shohei Ohtani were…

Fantrax Staff Debate: Betts vs. Stanton vs. Blackmon

One of the most enjoyable parts of fantasy sports in debating which players are better than others. We’ve all done it. You’re hanging out with some friends, probably enjoying a beer or two, and you get into a long discussion over which player is better than another one. Sometimes it might get heated, but that’s okay. We aren’t all going to agree on every single player. That would make fantasy leagues incredibly boring. The same can be said here at Fantrax. We have a great group of writers and podcasters (that might not be…

2018 Dudes and Don’ts: The Outfield Don’ts

All right, enough of the mushy stuff! I was 100% positive on the last edition of my Dudes & Don'ts, looking only at my Dudes in the outfield. Well, now it's time for the hate! *Cues up Slayer, starts moshing with himself* Every position is full of landmines, and there are more than a few in the outfield this year. It's like Saving Private Ryan out here. Is that reference too dated? Man, I'm getting old. It's like Hacksaw Ridge out here! Ok, so maybe the war analogies are a bit extreme. It's still just fantasy baseball.…

NFL Team Needs: AFC North

I'll just go ahead and get this out of the way. I went to the University of Cincinnati, have friends and family in the area, and live about an hour north of the city. I've been in bars where fights break out whenever Pittsburgh comes to town. So, needless to say, the AFC North is a part of my life. The worst part, for me at least, is that the power dynamic appears to be shifting. The Steelers still remain the powerhouse of the division, but Sashi Brown's genius has put the Browns back on the map. Cincinnati still needs help…
