2018 Player Profile: Gregory Polanco

Gregory Polanco - Time to Prove It About this time four years ago, Gregory Polanco was an up and comer in Pittsburgh, a potential superstar, and a universally ranked top-25 prospect in all of baseball. Baseball America had him ranked 10th overall in their pre-2014 prospect ranks, ahead of guys like Francisco Lindor (13th), Noah Syndergaard (16th), George Springer (18th), Carlos Martinez (31st) and Gary Sanchez (35th). Obviously, Polanco hasn’t reached the same potential that those players have, but he is still very young.…

Red Sox Get Their Man, Sign J.D. Martinez to Five-Year Deal

The wait is finally over. Free-agent outfielder J.D. Martinez has agreed to terms with the Red Sox on a five-year deal worth $110 million. The contract is front-loaded with an opt-out clause after the second year of the contract. https://twitter.com/jonmorosi/status/965714796288073729 First off, this is a great move for the Boston Red Sox, who have been looking for a big power bat to plop in the middle of the lineup since David Ortiz retired following the 2016 season. Now, they have that bat. This lineup was already…

Padres Land Eric Hosmer

Eric Hosmer has decided to sign with the Padres with an eight-year, $144M deal. The Padres don’t necessarily need a first baseman, but they could use his above league average bat in the lineup. The 28-year-old Hosmer is coming off a career season, at least from a fantasy perspective, with a .318 average, 25 HR, 98 runs, and 94 RBI. According to FanGraphs' auction calculator, he was the 25th-highest producing position player last season. There is a perception that Hosmer is inconsistent from season-to-season. This really…

Jake Odorizzi Traded to the Twins

The Rays have traded Jake Odorizzi to the Twins for hitting prospect Jermaine Palacios. The Rays continue to sell off pieces, with the 27-year-old Odorizzi being the last piece to leave. Odorizzi (265 ADP) is an acceptable fourth or fifth starter who has been average the past few seasons, with ERAs hovering around 4.00. This past season, he struck out 8.0 batters per nine, but the decent strikeout rate was offset by a 1.9 HR/9. He is an extreme flyball pitcher (31% GB%), which leads to two factors. First, in this…

Rays Add a Bat, Lose a Bat

In a move that doesn’t seem complete, the Angels have traded C.J. Cron to the Rays for a player to be named later. To make room for Cron, Corey Dickerson was designated for assignment. Dickerson has some recent real-life value, so I think he may end up getting traded. In Cron, the Rays get a right-handed bat to platoon with Brad Miller at first base or be the DH. Cron was without a job with the additions the Angels made over the offseason. Cron has some home run power (16 in the past two seasons in 450 or fewer PA), but…

We've reached the NBA All-Star break, so everyone can take a deep breath and relax for a bit. It's been a long, grueling four months already, and we still got almost two months to go.
