Arizona Adds Bullpen Depth with Yoshihisa Hirano

The Diamondbacks have come to terms with Japanese righty closer Yoshihisa Hirano. In Japan, the 34-year-old accumulated 156 saves over his career, but he is probably just a back-of-the-bullpen arm for Arizona. Just a couple of seasons ago, Hirano was striking out more than 10 batters per nine innings in Japan, which would translate to a 9.0 K/9 in the majors. Last season, his K/9 dropped to 7.4 K/9, but he still posted a respectable 2.98 ERA. The strikeout drop, which would translate to 5.5 K/9 in the majors, is likely…

Fantasy Football: Week 16 Quarterback Matchup Report

Just as quickly as Haley’s comet, Aaron Rodgers is gone again. He’s not injured or anything, but with Green Bay now eliminated from the playoffs, the Packers have decided to shut their superstar franchise QB down for the rest of the season. If you own Rodgers in fantasy and are playing for a championship this week, it sucks. But it’s a smart move for the Packers to make. Luckily, there are a lot of good QB matchups again this week. So if you need to make a move at QB to get you that league championship, we got you covered…

Fantasy EPL: Week 18 Review / Week 19 Preview

This weekend marks the beginning of a tortuous schedule in the English Premier League. While the rest of Europe’s elite will be celebrating the holidays with their friends and families, players in England will be working overtime. Therefore, be ready for many articles in a short period of time, combined with plenty of lineup setting. As for this round, Tammy Abraham might be your fantasy Santa. WEEK 18: Fantasy EPL REVIEW Swansea took the lead through Leroy Fer in Everton, but the hottest team in the league after…

Indians Fill First-Base Void with Yonder Alonso

The Indians have signed Yonder Alonso to a two-year deal to play first base and potentially see some time at DH. The signing improves his value a bit and helps alleviate the loss of Carlos Santana, who signed with the Phillies last week. Yonder’s 2018 talent level is tough to put a finger on. Last year he hit .266 with a career-best 28 home runs. The batting average is right in line with his career .268 batting average, but the home runs were more than the previous four years combined (6, 7, 5, 7). Yonder became a poster…

Brewers Bolster Rotation with Jhoulys Chacin

Various reports indicate that former Padre Jhoulys Chacin is nearing a two-year contract with the Milwaukee Brewers. For the Brewers, Chacin brings a veteran presence to the back end of a starting rotation that, due to an injury to its ace and performance sustainability questions for the rest of its mainstays, appears to be the most volatile part of the 2018 ballclub. Chacin, meanwhile, will lock in what is easily the biggest deal of his career. His fantasy stock for 2018, however, takes a resulting hit. Chacin’s low…

Orioles Lose Zach Britton, Brad Brach Likely Closer

Zach Britton has ruptured his Achilles tendon and will be out four to six months. The injury removes one of the game’s best closers until at least mid-way into the 2018 season. The Orioles need to determine the extent of 29-year-old lefty’s injury and decide how much they'll pay of his arbitration salary. They've already extended him a contract, so they are on the hook for part of it. They could release him before the 16th day of spring training and pay him only one-sixth of his salary. Likely, they'll wait until then to…

Giants Add Evan Longoria, Rays Create a Mess

Tampa Bay traded Evan Longoria to the Giants on Wednesday for Christian Arroyo, Denard Span, Matt Krook and Stephen Woods. The move upgrades the Giants' third base position while muddling up the Rays' infield depth chart. For Longoria, his fantasy value barely moves. He goes from one pitcher-friendly park to another. Both Tropicana Field and AT&T Park suppress right-handed power, but AT&T does so to an even larger degree. The offenses on both teams are subpar. He’ll bat near the top of each lineup. Not a major…

Prospects with Increased Value in 2018

I always preach adaptability when evaluating and drafting baseball players, and that mantra has definitely been tested after the last few years. I recently went over the ever-changing evaluation landscape as it pertains to the insane number of home runs that are being hit at the Major League level (link here in case you missed it), and now that I have established the new baseline and concepts have been put in place, it’s time to put those ideas into practice. No longer are pure mashers like Brendan Rodgers my main target,…

Ranking the European Golfers on the Top-125 Non-Member List

What do the following Thomas Pieters, Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrrell Hatton, Ross Fisher and Alex Noren have in common? You guessed it: They are all committed to the European Tour. Therefore, they’ve found themselves exempt onto the PGA Tour from being in the top-125 in FedEx Cup points last season. This has earned them their membership for the 2018 season. You’ll notice that these players’ Official World Golf Rankings can be higher than their fantasy rankings via PGA.com’s fantasy page. This is because these players are hard to…
