ESPN Player Rater Retrospective

It can often be difficult to place into context how well (or how poorly) certain players have performed recently. A glance at ESPN’s Player Rater, which attempts to quantify a player’s overall fantasy value by analyzing their performance in each facet of the game, can focus targets for fantasy owners looking for help on the waiver wire. Of course, when dealing with small sample sizes, a player’s results can be fluky, but placement at or near the top of these lists could be indicative of a substantive change to a player’s…

MLB Dynasty Report: Before They Were Stars

Well, well, well… Blink your eyes and it’s already June! A lot is happening in baseball, and that includes promotions and guys on the rise you should be aware of. Apologies for the two-week absence in me writing this column, but hopefully you have been enjoying the rest of the content here on Fantrax. There is a lot of it, and we’re coming fast and furious. There have also been some changes at the helm of the ship, and that has prompted a slight adjustment to the three players I’ll be looking at each week. Instead of…

Prospect Report: Colorado Avalanche

From now until the start of next season, I'll be looking at each NHL team's prospect situation and assessing each prospect's projected fantasy value. With all due respect to turnover leagues, I will be focusing solely on keeper and dynasty leagues, since prospects have minimal value in re-draft leagues. Most fantasy leagues vary in structure, so for the purpose of this exercise, I will be referring to leagues that include a main roster and a prospect roster, each with their own respective draft. I'll be examining teams in…

Dynasty Dugout: Overvalued Top MLB Prospects

Last week in Dynasty Dugout, we finished looking at trending players in dynasty fantasy baseball. This week we switch gears and take a look at some overvalued top prospects. Everyone loves prospects. This statement holds true for major league teams, fans, and fantasy owners, as well. Top prospects are gold, and nobody wants to give them up. But not all prospects turn out to be great, or even good. Take Byron Buxton, for example. I hate to keep picking on him, but he’s a perfect example. He was the unanimous No. 1 pick for…

5 Reasons Zack Cozart Will Be Better Than You Think

When a player like Zack Cozart starts the season hot, being cautiously optimistic makes sense. However, it’s June and he’s still producing. In fact, Cozart’s second in the National League in batting average (.344), third in OPS (1.054) and fourth in slugging (.622) entering Week 10 for fantasy. Not only do the Reds need to make a decision regarding Cozart’s future, but so do fantasy players. Many will suggest to sell high, but one season outliers do happen and if there’s an adjustment like Daniel Murphy made, a player’s…

Scouting the 2017 NBA Draft: Bigs

Although this draft class is touted as one of the best in recent memory, it’s lacking big men. This week, I’ll lay out my top-10 bigs with a small scouting report on each. The class may lack the elite talent in bigs, but it makes up for it in the depth of quality role players. Many of these guys will find a team and stick for a long time because they have one trait that puts them over the top. I will split this top-10 into tiers. First up, tier one. All measurements are from DraftExpress. Tier One These are players that…

The Monday Morning Sleeper – Breshad Perriman

Welcome to another edition of the Monday Morning Sleeper. Last week, I profiled a running back in Detroit named Ameer Abdullah, who has the starting job, but has to live up to the hype to keep it. A Fantasy Football Sleeper is a player that is in a position to play beyond their rankings or expectations, and who may provide you with some value at their draft position. The player I will be profiling this week is Breshad Perriman, who is a third-year wide receiver for the Baltimore Ravens. Perriman is looking to have a…

Undervalued Fantasy Baseball Hitter Matchups for the Week of June 5, 2017

With another full week of baseball coming up, it's always smart to check the waiver wire or scout for the occasional 'diamond in the rough' fantasy star found at a very cheap cost. Winning the waiver wire could be the difference between grabbing a few extra to land in the money or falling just short. Here's a few hitters that might be available on your league waiver wire or could be found at a relatively low cost against favorable pitching match ups. (Note: stats and numbers are as of June 2nd) Monday, June 5th: Aaron…

ESPN Fantasy Baseball Waiver Wire Pickups – June 4, 2017

In my golf league, I had to listen to one of my fellow league mates complain that one of his pitchers went on the disabled list with a blister on his finger. His complaint, like many others, is that it seems that MLB players seem to go on the DL list more often than previous years, due mostly to the new rule that shortened the time from 15 days to 10 days. He is likely right. As per ESPN, there were 165 disabled-list stints in the first 25 games compared to 147 a year ago, and that trend seems to be continuing. More than…
