Last year we had several starting quarterbacks change teams.
Matt Ryan went to the Colts, Deshaun Watson to the Browns, Carson Wentz to the Commanders, and Marcus Mariota to the Atlanta Falcons. Then there was the big trade between the Broncos and the Seahawks exchanging Drew Lock for Russell Wilson.
Not one of these QBs lived up to their expectations. Lock never saw the field. Desmond Ridder replaced Marioata. Wentz was only able to start 8 games. Ryan was benched a couple of times. We all watched what happened with Wilson in Denver.
This year was aagain see several quarterbacks changing teams. The big names are Aaron Rodgers, Derrick Carr, and Jimmy Garoppolo. Will they be the missing pieces their teams need to get to the Super Bowl? Or will they become disappointments like the QB movers from last year?
2023 Quarterbacks on New Teams
Aaron Rodgers – New York Jets
Every meaningful stat for quarterbacks was down last year for Rodgers. He did admit to having a broken thumb and I am sure that contributed to it as much as the team around him.
Rodgers will have the easiest transition of the three. This year, reunited with offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, he will know the system. He has brought with him, his security blankets, Randall Cobb and Allen Lazard. Rodgers will have receiver Garrett Wilson, last year’s Rockie of the Year. He will also have one of the best pass-catching running backs in the NFL with Breece Hall lining up in the backfield with him.
Last year he was the QB13 and this year his ranking and ADP are about the same. You should be able to make him a late-round QB1.
Derrick Carr – New Orleans Saints
Since 2018 Carr had passed for over 4,000 yards each season… Until last year. His completion percentage was down to 60%. It sure looked like this 32-year-old QB was starting to fade.
The Saints must think otherwise. He just signed a four-year contract. He will be throwing to a great receiver in Chris Olave. Then it gets dicey. On the other side is Michael Thomas who has only played in 10 of the last 50 games he was eligible for due to injuries. If he is healthy he can be a big help to Carr having a good year.
The backfield will be a mystery until we find out the fallout from Alvin Kamara’s legal troubles.
Picking up Carr as their quarterback will be much better for the Saints team than if you pick him up for your Fantasy team.
He was a QB17 last year after playing only 15 games. Moving to the new team has been quite the downgrade. He is ranked QB20 and his ADP right now is QB22 and I would rank him even lower.
Jimmy Garoppolo – Las Vegas Raiders
Last year it was not the plan to have Garoppolo be the starting quarterback. That was supposed to be Trey Lance until he had season-ending surgery after week two. Then Garoppolo got hurt and Brock Purdy became the next man up.
There has already been controversy about his foot but it looks like he will be ready for day one.
He had a loaded offense to work with in San Francisco; Josh Jacobs, Davante Adams, Jacoby Meyers, and Austin Hooper don’t really match up with Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samual, Brandon Aiyuk, and George Kittle but it is still better than some.
What this signing does for this quarterback is make him the starter on his new team. Feel good about taking him as a late-round QB2.
