Rest of Season Fantasy Baseball Rankings: Closer Carousel Continues

As we round the turn towards the final quarter of the 2024 MLB season, it only seems fitting we take one final trip on the closer carousel concerning my rest of season rankings. The carousel has taken many of us on quite the ride. Roughly half of the 30 MLB teams have a different primary closer than they did at the beginning of the season. And many of those changes have come in the past month or so. Now that we are in the season’s homestretch, this is something savvy fantasy managers can take advantage of.

The saves category is traditionally the easiest pitching category to catch up on towards the end of the season, and this year figures to be no different. Some managers who are out of contention might become lax with setting their lineups and maximizing their rosters. Others are in full-blown fantasy football mode and are not paying attention to the latest goings on. Here are just a few of the situations where players are unfairly rostered based on their current bullpen roles.

Baltimore Orioles

Seranthony Dominguez, Baltimore (33 percent rostered in Fantrax leagues)
Craig Kimbrel (91 percent rostered)

Craig Kimbrel has allowed 11 earned runs since his last save. I do not see him getting any save chances for a contending Baltimore team in the future. Meanwhile, Seranthony Dominguez has not allowed a run in nine appearances since being acquired at the trade deadline. He has picked up two saves for the Orioles since last weekend.

Toronto Blue Jays

Chad Green (55 percent rostered)
Jordan Romano (67 percent rostered)

Jordan Romano hasn’t pitched since May and the Toronto Blue Jays are in last place in their division. Chad Green is not the most dominant pitcher out there, but he has five saves in August and is the last man standing after Toronto traded Yimi Garcia.

Kansas City Royals

Lucas Erceg (44 percent rostered)
James McArthur (44 percent rostered)

James McArthur has one save since the All-Star break and has a 4.91 ERA (4.60 xERA) this year. The team acquired Erceg at the deadline and has trusted him in high-leverage situations. He has had two four-out saves since last weekend.

Arizona Diamondbacks

Justin Martinez (51 percent rostered)
Paul Sewald (78 percent rostered)

Arizona removed Sewald from the closer’s role several weeks ago. He has settled in nicely in middle relief. However, Justin Martinez has excelled as the stopper. He has yet to allow an earned run in August while striking out 13 hitters in just 6.2 innings.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Daniel Hudson (55 percent rostered)
Evan Phillips (83 percent rostered)

Evan Phillips has one save since the break. That came on July 23. Like Sewald, Phillips has pitched better in a more relaxed role. But even though Daniel Hudson blew his last chance, I don’t think Phillips is getting back the role anytime soon. If anything, Michael Kopech (55 percent rostered) might be the next man up if Los Angeles were to make a change. Kopech has allowed two baserunners in eight appearances in Dodger blue while striking out 13 hitters.

San Francisco Giants

Ryan Walker (61 percent rostered)
Camilo Doval (81 percent rostered)

The San Francisco Giants flat-out demoted former All-Star Camilo Doval to Triple-A last week. Ryan Walker only has one save, but it feels like he has the edge on the role for now. He has allowed just one run and seven baserunners over his last 12 outings.

Victor Vodnik (26 percent rostered), Calvin Faucher (14 percent), and John Brebbia (9 percent) are other primary closers who are readily available on the wire. Just note that they pitch for the three worst teams in MLB. That means save chances figure to be few and far between. Because of that, all three are outside of my overall top 300 in this week’s rankings.

As you can see below, I still have most of the former closers in this week’s ROS rankings. But they are quite low, and figure to remain there going forward. Most of them can be safely dropped if you need immediate returns. I wish I could promise that the bullpen landscape will remain stable over the next six weeks. However, there are likely to be a few more bumps in the road before we get to the finish line. Ensure you keep up with the latest bullpen news with Mike Carter’s latest Bullpen Report.
