ROS Fantasy Baseball Rankings

The second half of the 2023 MLB season is finally upon us. Now that we are back to the games themselves, it is time to update my ROS rankings. Hopefully, these rankings will assist you with any roster decisions going forward. Keep in mind that the upcoming trade deadline may cause a major shift in some of these rankings. That is especially the case when it comes to relief pitchers. If a closer on a bad team is traded to set up for a contender, his rest-of-season value will plummet. Whereas an everyday hitter who may get moved might not see much change in his value going forward.

Outfielder News and Notes

I don’t know about you, but the All-Star break itself felt as long as the first half did. Maybe that’s because I have Luis Robert in my high-stakes home league. I am old enough to remember when we didn’t want our players competing in the Home Run Derby. Robert tweaked a calf during the Derby and missed the All-Star Game as a result. Hopefully, he avoided serious injury. I still have him ranked as a top-25 hitter in my latest rankings, but pay attention to his health in the coming days.

Another budding superstar who avoided major injury recently is Corbin Carroll of the Arizona Diamondbacks. When I first heard about his injury on Thursday, I thought Carroll’s arm might have to be amputated. I guess Twitter isn’t what it used to be as a news source. Of course, Carroll returned to the lineup on Friday with two stolen bases. The rookie phenom has been one of fantasy’s best producers, with 18 home runs and 26 steals. I do not expect much of a drop-off anytime soon from the 22-year-old.

The news is not as good for a couple of veteran outfielders. Aaron Judge’s return does not appear imminent. He has resumed baseball activities including light hitting, but no return date has been set. It is hard to say whether we will see him in a week or a month. Reports have emerged that his toe injury will take years to fully heal. I admittedly may be too optimistic about where Judge sits in my latest rankings. If we get some clarity on Judge’s status in the coming days, that may change my outlook.

Mike Trout recently underwent surgery to address a left hamate fracture suffered on a swing last week. Trout is expected to be out anywhere from 4-8 weeks. There are only 11 weeks left in the regular season, and many fantasy leagues will end earlier depending on playoff format. I would try to hold onto Trout wherever possible. Even in a down year, he has provided solid fantasy production. But if your league ends early and you need the roster spot, I could understand making the painful decision to cut the Angels’ star.
