Running back is king… or is it? Since the advent of fantasy football, elite workhorse running backs have been the most coveted resource in drafts. They were the building blocks of almost every winning team and they filled up the first round. As renowned fantasy football enthusiast Bob Dylan once said, “The times, they are a’changin’.” Three-down backs who are out there for almost every player are getting scarce and the few that do exist seem to be getting hurt more and more often. What’s this mean for fantasy football managers? That’s something our top analysts had to consider as they hashed out our 2023 consensus running back rankings. The 2023 Running Back Pool
There’s a rookie running back third (tied) in our running back rankings. That should tell you something about the level of confidence our analysts have in the returning RBs… Or maybe that tells us how good Bijan Robinson is.
It’s not that there aren’t any talented running backs. There are plenty. The problem is that each one of them is surrounded by huge question marks and it starts right at the top.
Christian McCaffrey’s proven dual-threat performances make him the obvious top choice… if you think he can stay healthy.
Derrick Henry is a proven workhorse of the old school variety but he’s got a lot of miles on those tires and we have to wonder… if he can stay healthy.
Saquon Barkley, Josh Jacobs, Breece Hall; every one of them carries the potential to rise to the top of the running back rankings… if they can stay healthy.
Hopefully, you’re seeing a trend here. Injuries affect running backs more than any other position. Most fantasy managers agree that a healthy three-down back is the most scarce commodity in football, also making it the most valuable. Do we know who these running backs are though? Who are the best bets to stay healthy?
You’ll see what our analysts think a little further down the page but first, let’s meet the Fantrax analysts who helped shape these running back rankings.
