Don’t You Dare Bench These Two-Start Pitchers

Zack Wheeler SP Phillies

Last start: Monday, June 3rd vs. Brewers – 7IP W 1ER 5H 3BB 6K

2 starts next week: Tuesday, June 11th @ Red Sox + Sunday, June 16th @ Orioles

Corbin Burnes SP Orioles

Last start: Thursday, June 6th @ Blue Jays

2 starts next week: Tuesday, June 11th vs. Braves + Sunday, June 16th vs. Phillies

Dylan Cease SP Padres

Last start: Wednesday, June 5th @ Angels – 6IP L 3ER 4H 1BB 6K

2 starts next week: Monday, June 10th vs. A’s + Sunday, June 16th @ Mets

Logan Gilbert SP Mariners

Last start: Wednesday, June 5th @ A’s – 7IP L 1ER (2R) 5H 0BB 5K

2 starts next week: Monday, June 10th vs. White Sox + Saturday, June 15th vs. Rangers

Paul Skenes SP Pirates

Last start: Wednesday, June 6th vs. Dodgers – 5IP W 3ER 6H 1BB 8K

2 starts next week: Tuesday, June 11th @ Cardinals + Sunday, June 16th @ Rockies

Notes: Plenty has been written about Paul Skenes already. I’ll just sum it up: the 22-year-old is already a good Major League pitcher and likely to become great. He’s a must-start until further notice.

Ryan Pepiot SP/RP Rays

Last start: Tuesday, June 4th @ Marlins – 6IP W 3ER 6H 0BB 8K

2 starts next week: Monday, June 10th vs. Orioles + Saturday, June 15th @ Braves

Pablo Lopez SP Twins

Last start: Thursday, June 6th @ Yankees – 4IP L 7ER 4H 6BB 4K

2 starts next week: Tuesday, June 11th vs. Rockies + Sunday, June 16th vs. A’s

Carlos Rodon SP Yankees

Last start: Wednesday, June 5th vs. Twins – 6IP W 2ER 3H 0BB 9K

2 starts next week: Monday, June 10th @ Royals + Saturday, June 15th @ Red Sox

Bryan Woo SP Mariners

Last start: Thursday, June 6th @ A’s – 6IP W 0ER 2H 0BB 6K

2 starts next week: Tuesday, June 11th vs. White Sox + Sunday, June 16th vs. Rangers

Nick Pivetta SP/RP Red Sox

Last start: Wednesday, June 5th vs. Braves – 7IP W 0ER 1H 2BB 9K

2 starts next week: Tuesday, June 11th vs. Phillies + Sunday, June 16th vs. Yankees

You Should Probably Start These Two-Start Pitchers

Seth Lugo SP Royals

Last start: Wednesday, June 5th @ Guardians – 6IP 5ER 6H 1BB 5K

2 starts next week: Monday, June 10th vs. Yankees + Saturday, June 15th @ Dodgers

Zach Eflin SP Rays

Last start: Wednesday, June 5th @ Marlins – 4IP 2ER 3H 0BB 3K

2 starts next week: Tuesday, June 11th vs. Cubs + Sunday, June 16th @ Braves

Notes: Now healthy after missing almost three weeks with lower back inflammation, Zach Eflin will draw two starts next week. He was only allowed to throw 55 pitches in his return, so your odds of getting a win or two are not fantastic. If you have the depth, maybe sit for one more week. If not, at least the 30-year-old should help your ratios.

Jack Flaherty SP Tigers

Last start: Tuesday, June 4th @ Rangers – 5IP W 0ER 2H 0BB 4K

2 starts next week: Tuesday, June 11th vs. Nationals + Sunday, June 16th @ Astros

Notes: There is a possibility that Jack Flaherty will miss one or both of his starts next week. He was pulled from Tuesday’s game with a stiff back. He’s stated that he doesn’t expect to miss any time, but it would be a good idea to double-check before rosters lock.

In the Right Situation, These Two-Start Pitchers Make Sense

Jose Berrios SP Blue Jays

Last start: Wednesday, June 5th vs. Orioles – 6IP 2ER 6H 3BB 2K

2 starts next week: Monday, June 10th @ Brewers + Sunday, June 16th vs. Guardians

Notes: I think we’re still waiting on some substantial regression for Jose Berrios given the noisy contact numbers (90.3 MPH average exit velocity ranks in the 17th percentile). It’s led to an xERA (4.36) much higher than what’s played out (2.80 ERA). Against two decent lineups (Brewers ranked 4th in wOBA, Guardians 11th), I’d be worried about some of that regression ruining my ratios. Probably worth the risk in points league, though.

Jesus Luzardo SP Marlins

Last start: Tuesday, June 4th vs. Rays – 4.1IP L 9ER 9H 2BB 2K

2 starts next week: Tuesday, June 11th @ Mets + Sunday, June 16th @ Nationals

Notes: Jesus Luzardo without his characteristically high K rate (only eight strikeouts in his last 18 innings) seems like just another pitcher. Except in points leagues, I’m sitting this out until he sorts it out.

Erick Fedde SP White Sox

Last start: Wednesday, June 5th @ Cubs – 5IP 3ER 6H 0BB 7K

2 starts next week: Monday, June 10th @ Mariners + Saturday, June 15th @ DBacks

Marcus Stroman SP Yankees

Last start: Thursday, June 6th vs. Twins – 4.2IP 5ER 6H 2BB 2K

2 starts next week: Tuesday, June 11th @ Royals + Sunday, June 16th @ Red Sox

Brady Singer SP Royals

Last start: Thursday, June 6th @ Guardians – 3.2IP 2ER (3R) 9H 1BB 2K

2 starts next week: Tuesday, June 11th vs. Yankees + Sunday, June 16th @ Dodgers

Kyle Harrison SP Giants

Last start: Tuesday, June 4th @ DBacks – 6IP L 3ER (4R) 8H 0BB 5K

2 starts next week: Monday, June 10th vs. Astros + Sunday, June 16th vs. Angels

Notes: It’s just super hard to trust Kyle Harrison with all the hard contact (average exit velocity ranked 16th percentile/hard-hit rate 17th) and the lack of strikeouts (8.2 K/9 rate vs. 14.6 in minor league career). Oracle Park helps (6th-best venue for pitchers), but I still wouldn’t start him outside of points leagues.

Chris Paddack SP/RP Twins

Last start: Wednesday, June 5th @ Yankees – 4IP L 7ER 6H 2BB 7K

2 starts next week: Monday, June 10th vs. Rockies + Saturday, June 15th vs. A’s

Notes: Yes, this is a risky one. I’m inclined to give Chris Paddack a chance as an RP in points leagues this week. He’s had some standout games against bad teams (he struck out 10 against both the Mariners and White Sox) and he’ll get the Rockies on the road followed by the A’s (ranked 23rd in wOBA). I’d have to be desperate in a categories league, though.

Albert Suarez SP/RP Orioles

Last start: Wednesday, June 5 @ Blue Jays – 5IP 2ER 5H 1BB 4K

2 starts next week: Monday, June 10th @ Rays + Saturday, June 15th vs. Phillies

Notes: Though most of the impressive numbers (1.83 ERA/1.02 WHIP) for Albert Suarez have come in a relief role, they are backed by decent peripherals. The respectable 25.8% whiff rate and 52nd percentile hard-hit rate have led to a 3.11 xERA. With RP eligibility, the 34-year-old seems like a decent bet in points leagues. Especially with the Orioles lineup helping him out.

JP Sears SP A’s

Last start: Thursday, June 6th vs. Mariners – 6IP L 2ER 3H 2BB 8K

2 starts next week: Tuesday, June 11th @ Padres + Sunday, June 16th @ Twins

Jose Soriano SP/RP Angels

Last start: Tuesday, June 4th vs. Padres – 6IP 1ER 4H 1BB 7K

2 starts next week: Tuesday, June 11th @ DBacks + Sunday, June 16th @ Giants

Joey Estes SP A’s

Last start: Wednesday, June 5th vs. Mariners – 6.1IP W 0ER 1H 0BB 5K

2 starts next week: Monday, June 10th @ Padres + Saturday, June 15th @ Twins

Notes: OK, Joey Estes is on the A’s and isn’t likely to get many wins. But mixed in with one really bad start (eight earned runs in Houston), are four very decent ones (six earned runs in 23.1 innings). Wednesday was the best of the bunch when the 22-year-old threw six perfect innings before a leadoff double in the 7th. There are enough encouraging signs to be interested in a deep league. Particularly, his ability to pound the zone (resulting in a wonderful 5.6% BB rate). That can pay off in a place like the Oakland Coliseum, which is the 5th best pitching environment according to Park Factors. Sadly, though, the righty will get two road starts next week. Maybe just a deep points league for now. But do stay tuned.

Miles Mikolas SP Cardinals

Last start: Wednesday, June 5th @ Astros – 6IP W 2ER 5H 0BB 3K

2 starts next week: Tuesday, June 11th vs. Pirates + Sunday, June 16th @ Cubs

Notes: A great walk rate (4.7% this season), decent ground ball percentages (42.3% this season which is lower than usual), and lots of innings (six or more in seven of his 13 starts) tend to make Miles Mikolas a relevant streamer. In a week where he faces the Pirates (28th in wOBA) and the Cubs (20th in wOBA), you can do worse in points leagues.

Jameson Taillon SP Cubs

Last start: Wednesday, June 5th vs. White Sox – 5IP 5ER 10H 1BB 6K

2 starts next week: Tuesday, June 11th @ Rays + Sunday, June 16th vs. Cardinals

You Better Be Desperate To Start These Two-Start Pitchers

James Paxton SP Dodgers

Last start: Wednesday, June 5th @ Pirates – 1.2IP L 6ER (7R) 6H 2BB 2K

2 starts next week: Tuesday, June 11th vs. Rangers + Sunday, June 16th vs. Royals

Notes: The perplexing lack of whiffs and strikeouts (ranked in the 8th percentile and 7th, respectively), combined with an almost-two-mile-per-hour drop in his velocity, make me want to avoid James Paxton. That’s despite playing for a powerhouse offense.

Tylor Megill SP Mets

Last start: Monday, June 3rd @ Nationals – 5IP W 4ER (5R) 7H 3BB 4K

2 starts next week: Tuesday, June 11th vs. Marlins + Sunday, June 16th vs. Padres

Dane Dunning SP/RP Rangers

Last start: Tuesday, June 4th vs. Tigers – 5IP L 3ER 4H 1BB 4K

2 starts next week: Tuesday, June 11th @ Dodgers + Sunday, June 16th @ Mariners

Jordan Montgomery SP DBacks

Last start: Wednesday, June 5th vs. Giants – 2IP L 6ER 7H 3BB 1K

2 starts next week: Tuesday, June 11th vs. Angels + Sunday, June 16th vs. White Sox

Notes: Can we blame Jordan Montgomery’s horrendous start (6.80 ERA/1.73 WHIP after nine starts) simply on missing Spring Training? His velocity sure is down a couple of ticks. And the K rate has almost disappeared (just 13.8%). In any case, don’t think you can put him in your lineup right now. Not unless you really are desperate.

Spencer Arrighetti SP Astros

Last start: Tuesday, June 11th vs. Cardinals – 3IP 1ER 3H 3BB 4K

2 starts next week: Monday, June 10th @ Giants + Sunday, June 16th vs. Tigers

Colin Rea SP Brewers

Last start: Tuesday, June 4th @ Phillies – 4IP 0ER 4H 2BB 2K

2 starts next week: Monday, June 10th vs. Blue Jays + Sunday, June 16th vs. Reds

Dakota Hudson SP/RP Rockies

Last start: Wednesday, June 5th vs. Reds – 4.1IP 4ER 5H 4BB 4K

2 starts next week: Monday, June 10th @ Twins + Sunday, June 16th vs. Pirates

Spencer Schwellenbach SP Braves

Last start: Wednesday, June 5th @ Red Sox – 4.2IP L 6ER 7H 2BB 4K

2 starts next week: Tuesday, June 11th @ Orioles + Sunday, June 16th vs. Rays

Jake Woodford SP/RP White Sox

Last start: Thursday, June 6th vs. Red Sox – 4IP L 7ER 10H 3BB 3K

2 starts next week: Tuesday, June 11th @ Mariners + Sunday, June 16th @ DBacks

Patrick Corbin SP Nationals

Last start: Wednesday, June 5th vs. Mets – 5.1IP L 6ER 7H 1BB 3K

2 starts next week: Tuesday, June 11th @ Tigers + Sunday, June 16th vs. Marlins
