Using Fantrax to Help Manage Your Fantasy Baseball Teams

The other day I got a text from a friend about a Fantrax setting that he didn’t’ know existed, and I realized that it might just be helpful to offer some introductions to useful tools in Fantrax that may be less well know.

Ready to move your fantasy football league over to Fantrax? You and your entire league could win tickets to any NFL regular-season game! Already have a league on Fantrax? Good News; you’re automatically entered! For more information check out our Gameday Experience.

Fantrax Features to Help You Win Your League

Ownership

Let’s start with the very simple, yet useful, ownership tab.

When you click on any player a window will pop up:

player window

In this window, there are a number of useful tabs that we’ll explore – but let’s start with ownership. This tab is especially useful if you are in a number of leagues.

Under the ownership tab (the last one to the right), you’ll see something like this:

ownership

This is a very useful tool when you have multiple leagues as you wonder about who has a player if you are looking to acquire someone, or if you are wondering if someone is available to add in any/all of your leagues. This gives you a quick window into every single league you have in one quick spot. While this is useful especially when you have a lot of leagues, if you have more than even a single league it is very helpful.

Transactions

Also, in this window, there is a transaction tab. This will show you the history of all of the transactions for the player in the majors. This is handy, but not as helpful in fantasy managing as the trans (fantasy).

The fantasy transaction window shows you if a player was added, dropped, how much FAAB was spent in that addition, or if the player has been traded:

player faab

player trade

But how is this useful? First, if you don’t remember the trade or add happening and are working on another trade, you can check if the team who currently rosters a player, traded for them or if they added them (caveat this is limited to a current season so will not show previous year’s trades for dynasty and keeper leagues).

This can be very helpful when you are considering a trade because it can give you some (though not a complete) picture of how that player is valued by the person currently rostering them. You can also see if the team added them recently or if they were part of a bigger trade and so maybe this team doesn’t value them as much and that player was a throw-in/final piece, or anything of that sort. Whatever it may be, having more information of this sort about how the other manager acquired the player is always helpful. Additionally, if you forgot how you added someone or what the trade was, you can always go check!

Service Time

Another tab, Service time, can help similarly, or in evaluating how YOU have deployed your own players:

player service time

This can be very helpful in seeing how you have deployed players OR how others have deployed their players. If you are considering trading someone or looking to trade for someone, you can see if you are using the player ever, or are they pretty redundant for your team? Is your potential trade partner using the player or might they be willing to move them?

Games

There are also 3 games tabs that break down the game by game, where FULL gives you all of their stats, GAMES gives the traditional stats, and FANTASY just their fantasy stats for your league. This is pretty clear cut but nice to see how players have been doing recently!

Bat vs. Pitch

Now one tab in here that is VERY helpful – is the bat vs. pitch option. If you look here you can see how each of your hitters has performed against that day’s starting pitcher and all the other pitchers on the opposing team that they are facing that day. This can be really helpful when you are trying to decide what player to start and who to bench among various players – especially in a daily league. That page will look like this:

bat vs pitch

And – you’ll notice at the top – you can change that dropdown if you want to plan ahead for the next series that player will have.

Splits

Finally, you can go to the hitter’s/pitcher’s splits and see how they perform in a number of their splits, versus righty, versus lefty, home, away, day-night, by month, versus certain teams etc…

Some other neat features

On my pod with Taylor Case the other day, he mentioned the matchup preview tool on Fantrax for H2H leagues and so I wanted to mention that one too. If you go to the current or future matchups under matchup preview, you can see how the system projects the matchup to go the rest of the way or in the next period depending on where you look.

This tool can be invaluable in deciding how to play certain players or not. So, for example, if the projections say that I’m likely to lose saves by 10 but be probably only up by 1 win, I might bench more relievers to play more starters to try to lean on the advantage that I seem to already have. Of course – make sure to also look at the rosters and do your own evaluation and make smart choices in there too – BUT – this is a very very helpful tool.

If there are other features you appreciate that you think people may not know about please let me know!
