Week 8 Fantasy Football: 3 Players You Can Drop

We’re almost at the halfway point of the Fantasy Football Season. We know tendencies, we know snap counts, but most of all, we know who we were right about and who we were wrong about. At the end of the day, you can only roster so many players, so it’s time to discuss three players you can drop at this point in the season. We know winning your leagues takes a lot of work. But don’t fear! FantraxHQ is doing the work for you. Whether it’s matchups to exploit, injury replacements, or flat-out hot takes, we’ve got your fix. In this article, we’ll highlight four potential players you can drop from your roster to give way to new talent.

Week 8 Drop Candidates

Braelon Allen, New York Jets

After seeing how efficient and powerful he was in the preseason, I drafted Braelon Allen onto several of my fantasy teams, but he became a priority for me on those teams in which I had Breece Hall. I felt incredibly vindicated when he had 19 fantasy points in Week 2 on seven carries. Then on Week 3, he took 11 carries for 55 yards. At that incredibly early point in the season, the trend was going to be that Allen was going to be used as much as possible, while still maximizing Hall’s snaps. The two even shared the field on several snaps. But, buddy…let me tell you…Week 2 was the top of Allen’s fantasy mountain. Since Week 4, Allen’s rushing touches have declined steadily from eight in Week 4, to five, to three, to two this past Monday vs. Pittsburgh. Not to mention, the acquisition of DaVante Adams likely shows a prioritization of the passing game, and the Jets seem to be bad enough that they are rarely going to have a positive game script for the rushing attack.

Here are his snap counts over the season:

  • Week 1: 25
  • Week 2: 36
  • Week 3: 35
  • Week 4: 45
  • Week 5: 36
  • Week 6: 19
  • Week 7: 17

It’s over. It is what it is. The talent is undeniable, but Breece Hall has shown why he’s the RB1 and deserves to get every snap he can. Unless Breece Hall gets injured, Allen has very little trade value. You can go ahead and cut him if you’re one of the 30% of people who still have him.

Trey Sermon, Indianapolis Colts

Sermon has actually done a great job of reviving his career after being buried on the depth chart in San Francisco early on in his career. Being buried on the depth chart might’ve been his own doing, but the 49ers roster was also chock-full of running back talent. This year, with the Colts, Sermon was named the backup running back to Jonathan Taylor. When Taylor went down with a high-ankle sprain, Sermon stepped up and put on an excellent performance…at least at first. In Week 5, he took ten carries for 38 yards and 1 TD, for 15 fantasy points. In Week 6, he got 18 (!!) carries and broke out for a pedestrian 29 yards rushing, for a whopping 2.9 fantasy points. This past week, if you’re like me, you were hanging on for a rebound before Taylor returns. Unfortunately, Sermon only received 8 carries and took them for 36 rushing yards. A solid output, but Tyler Goodson performed better than Sermon in Week 6, on fewer carries, and then received a bump in playing time in Week 7, taking 14 carries for 51 yards, and a TD.

Here’s Sermon’s snap count this season:

  • Week 1: 2
  • Week 2: 18
  • Week 3: 5
  • Week 4: 17
  • Week 5: 41
  • Week 6: 42
  • Week 7: 32

I knew I wouldn’t be rostering Sermon for long, but I didn’t expect his job to get taken. It’s a wrap for Sermon’s fantasy prospects this year. You can go ahead and drop him.

Zamir White, Las Vegas Raiders

If you’re in the 58% of fantasy owners that are rostering White today, I’m here to tell you to STOP! I started the year believing that White was the RB1 in Vegas, now I’ve realized two important things: 1) He’s not the RB1. 2) The Raiders aren’t a good enough football team for anyone to be rostering any running back on this roster. They are constantly trailing, and the QB play has been horrendous enough to allow the defenses to stack the box vs. the running game. On top of that, the upcoming matchups of Kansas City, Cincy, Bye Week, and Miami (with Tua). White will not have a use on your fantasy roster, even if there is an injury to Mattison. Just for kicks, here are White’s snap counts over the course of the season.

  • Week 1: 23
  • Week 2: 40
  • Week 3: 14
  • Week 4: 35
  • Week 5:
  • Week 6:
  • Week 7: 11

Life is short. Too short to compound mistakes. Cut bait, and keep it pushin’.
