Week 3 Starting Pitcher Rankings for Fantasy Baseball

Welcome to the weekly starting pitcher rankings for the now tumultuous week 3 of 2024 fantasy baseball. Unexpectedly, the top tier of the starting pitcher rankings looks rather barren with the news of Shane Bieber’s season-ending elbow surgery and Spencer Strider’s UCL damage diagnosis. As a result, both have been removed from the rankings entirely and fantasy owners will need to dig deeper to find short-term replacements. Fortunately, our rankings provide the means to get through the next week until viable long-term solutions arise.

Ready to make the 2024 MLB season the best yet? Fantrax offers a fantasy baseball league for everyone. Want to get started right away? Then jump into a Best Ball League or a Draft and Hold. Starting Pitcher Rankings for Week 3 (4/8 – 4/14)

A few prefacing notes to help you identify key risers and fallers in the starting pitcher rankings below:

  • Everything has changed with Spencer Strider and Shane Bieber’s injury news on Saturday. While it’s not yet determined the length of Strider’s absence, it seems likely Strider will be joining Bieber on the indefinite injured list soon. How those massive rotation holes will be filled is yet to be determined so we’ll update the rankings as more information is provided heading into the week. However, it’s unlikely any impact arms will arrive on the rankings list as a result of those new openings.
  • On the bright side, last year’s NL Cy Young Award winner, Blake Snell, makes his debut for the Giants with a juicy two-start matchup. There may be some rust but fantasy managers should have a high level of confidence in starting Snell in both weekly and daily lineups for both matchups.
  • There are just a couple of teams whose entire rotation benefits from easier matchups this week. These teams include the Rays (@LAA & SFG) and the Nationals (@SFG & @OAK). Though, the verdict is still out on how safe it is to start a pitcher against the Giants truly is at this early point of the season. As we’ve seen in the past, once they get hot they can do a lot of damage so temper expectations for dominant outings.
  • Lastly, there are also teams with strong rotations that are limited in their rankings due to tougher matchups this week. These team rotations include the Twins (LAD & @DET), the Padres (CHC & @LAD), and the Cardinals (PHI & @ARI). Several of those team’s frontline starters still have decent start confidence ratings for their matchups this week, but their rankings are far lower than normal.
