2025 Fantasy Football: Week 5 Quarterback and Running Back Starts and Sits

One month of football has passed already. Now, we are at Week 5, and the start and sit decisions are more important than ever. This weekly article is for quarterbacks and running backs. Last week, I missed badly having Dak Prescott as a sit. He finished as the QB1. I missed badly on Geno Smith, too. He did not finish in the top 24 for Quarterbacks. As for Kyler Murray and Justin Fields, I was correct. Murray finished as the QB16 only, and Fields finished as the QB4.

On the RB side, Trey Benson was disappointing, and JK Dobbins had over 100 rushing yards, but was just the RB28. Cam Skattebo was a sit for me and finished as the RB22, which is not bad, so I will take that as a miss. The Washington Commanders did not perform well against the Atlanta Falcons, so that was a good call on my part.

Quarterback and Running Back Starts and Sits

Quarterback Starts

CJ Stroud @ Baltimore Ravens

CJ Stroud has not lived up to his amazing rookie season, but he plays the Baltimore Ravens in Week 5. The Ravens were once a feared defense, but that has changed. They are one of the worst defenses in football. The Ravens are allowing 22.99 fantasy PPG to opposing QBs. That is the third most through one month of football. I am starting Stroud in my home league due to Lamar Jackson being hurt. Stroud will have the best game of his season and will carve up the Ravens’ secondary.

Justin Fields vs. Dallas Cowboys

Justin Fields finished as the QB4 in Week 4 against the Miami Dolphins. It was a great performance after coming back from a concussion. Now, he will finish as a top-five QB again in Week 5. He will be facing the Dallas Cowboys, the worst team against QBs this season. The Cowboys are allowing a league-high 27.42 fantasy PPG through one month. Out of my starts, he is my favorite pick.

Quarterback Sits

Baker Mayfield @ Seattle Seahawks

Baker Mayfield revived his career a few years ago and has not looked back. He has found his home with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In Week 5, he faces the Seattle Seahawks. The Seahawks are allowing the seventh fewest fantasy PPG to opposing QBs. Mayfield faced the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 4 and finished as the QB10, but I do not feel confident about Mayfield this week.

Bo Nix @ Philadelphia Eagles

Bo Nix played amazingly in Week 4, but it was against the Cincinnati Bengals. He finished as the QB5. This week, he faces the defending Super Bowl Champions, the Philadelphia Eagles. It is an away game, too. This will be Nix’s biggest test this season, and it is better to keep him on your bench this week.

Running Back Starts

Woody Marks @ Baltimore Ravens

Woody Marks finally broke out in Week 4. He had two touchdowns, 27.9 fantasy points, and finished as the RB6. As I stated earlier, the Baltimore Ravens have one of, if not the worst, defenses in football. Marks gets his chance to build off his best performance in his young career with an even easier matchup in Week 5. He is one of the better starts at the running back position this week.

Arizona Cardinals vs Tennessee Titans

Trey Benson is on the IR and will miss the next four games. With that being said, I am starting Michael Carter or Emari Demercado if they are on my team. The Tennessee Titans are allowing 29.48 fantasy PPG to running backs. That is the fourth most. The track record for those two running backs is not great, but the upside is through the roof. I am chancing it.

Running Back Sits

Jordan Mason @ Cleveland Browns

Jordan Mason was great in Week 3 and finished as the RB7, but then faced a tough defense in Week 4. He faces an even tougher defense in Week 5. The Cleveland Browns are allowing less than 15 fantasy PPG to the position, the second-fewest this season. If the Minnesota Vikings are going to win, it will be due to the passing game. Mason should be on your bench this week.

Chase Brown vs. Detroit Lions

With Joe Burrow being hurt, no one is playable on the Cincinnati Bengals’ offense. Chase Brown was drafted as a RB1 this season, and his best finish was in Week 1 as the RB22. Now, he faces the Detroit Lions this week. He was the easiest player to fade in the off-season. He will be the easiest player to sit out this upcoming week.
