It’s right there in the name: shooting. When targeting this position, I want explosive guards that put points up on the board. Those that do it via the three-point ball are more desirable. If they add some rebounds out of the backcourt, even better. But the ideal situation is those who can both score and distribute. The more categories we can fill, oh, and some steals would be nice too- the better things are. Yes, we’re just asking for everything, but why not be greedy? After all, we want it all, so target all of it. Now, let’s dig into the 2026-27 fantasy basketball shooting guard rankings.

Preseason Notes
Amen Thompson, Houston Rockets
Follow the money. If you need any proof as to how the Rockets feel about Thompson, look no further than the $208 million contract extension they gave him at the beginning of September. Again, we can’t always find a one-to-one relationship between a player’s value to their NBA team and your fantasy basketball team, but there’s a fair amount of correlation. And in the case of Thompson, the best is yet to come.
As he enters his fourth career season, Thompson continues to improve. I’d expect that to continue this season as, to a degree, the 23-year-old still has some degree of rawness. He scored a career-high 18.3 points per game along with 7.8 rebounds and a career high of 5.3 assists. Thompson boosted his free throw percentage to 77.9% while also shooting 53.4% from the field.
Maybe we get a few more points per game out of Thompson as he refines his game. Perhaps there are also a few more assists as Thompson refines his skills as a playmaker. Yes, Fred VanVleet is coming back, but Thompson is the future.
Dylan Harper, San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs are a very deep team. Youth and upside dominate their depth chart, and Harper is no different. Or maybe he is?
After averaging about 23 minutes per game last season, it became clear that the Spurs need to get the 20-year-old more run. Entering the 2026-27 NBA season, while Harper is still expected to come off the bench, his playing time should increase. In the 11-game stretch leading up to the final game of the regular season, we got a sneak peak as to what Harper is capable of.
The rookie averaged 15.5 points, 4.3 assists, and 3.6 rebounds per game over about 25 minutes of playing time. He also picked up a steal a game and shot 59.3% from the field and 92.3% from the free-throw line. With 1.5 three-pointers per game, Harper showed the ability to stuff the stat sheet. He then averaged 14.1 points per game in the postseason as the second overall pick continued to rise to the occasion.
Cedric Coward, Memphis Grizzlies
The Grizzlies are a young team looking to build towards the future. That means there’s a lot of opportunity from a fantasy basketball perspective. One of the players we have our eyes on is Coward as he begins his sophomore season.
Over 26 minutes of playing time, the first-round pick averaged 13.6 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. We’d like more 1.5 three-pointers and 2.8 assists per game out of the backcourt, but as he gets more comfortable in the NBA and his usage increases, more production is possible. The fact that he’s starting is nice, but it has to be about more than offense here. Adding a few more points per game shouldn’t be a problem, but we need some help in the other categories before Coward is a truly viable option. Instead, it follows the strategy of drafting your potential early-season waiver claim.
