2026 Fantasy Football: First Year Dynasty Draft Strategy

Making that commitment is one of the best things you can do. Yes, I’m talking about a relationship, but don’t worry, it’s not with a human being. In fact, it’s with a lot of humans. It will take your money, your time, your sanity, and cause you stress. However, it will also cause you a great deal of happiness. No, I’m not talking about a significant other. Instead, I’m talking about a fantasy football team. Beginning a journey in a dynasty league is one of the most rewarding things you can do. So, let’s take a look at first-year dynasty draft strategy.

What!? Your fantasy football league wasn’t hosted on Fantrax last season!? Once you see how Fantrax stacks up to the competition, we think you’ll be singing a different tune next season.

First Year Dynasty Draft Strategy

Know Your Path

The ultimate objective here is to win. Not only to win initially, but to continue to win. There are many ways to build that dominant franchise, but it’s not going to happen overnight. It’s also not going to be easy. Most importantly, the build is never going to stop. In a dynasty league, you’re never in the position to take a day off, but there are a lot of benefits. A major one is that you can change courses at any time, and do so often.

But when you begin that initial draft, you have to know what your objective is. Yes, you have to build the best possible team, but it needs to be sustainable. You could go all in and target only veterans, but that’s an extreme approach. More importantly, you need to ask yourself if your plan is to be in the upper or lower half of the league in year one. My answer is always going to be the upper half.

Begin With Redraft Rankings

You have to start from somewhere. Remember, we are still in 2026 and the objective, hopefully, is to win this year. Of course, we want to win in 2027 and 2028 as well, so this is where the adjustments have to take place. However, if you are playing for the present, there’s bound to be value when comparing redraft and dynasty rankings. It’s also important to understand how this translates to roster construction and your draft.

Adjust for Age

This is when you get to create your dynasty rankings. The main factor that comes into play when adjusting your redraft rankings to dynasty rankings is age. Upside and opportunity also come into play here, but this is when you take the long-term view.

Balance

As with anything else in life, we need to strive for balance here. The path you choose to take will dictate how much balance to target, but regardless, there needs to be balance. Balance between predictability and upside, but also between youth and veterans. From a positional standpoint, it’s also important to have dependable options at each position.

Upside on Your Bench

I get it, you want to win. You should want to win. But you also need to build for the future and look long term. That means there should be upside, both for this year and next year, on your bench. Once you secure your starting lineup and some dependable options on the bench, go after some upside. Plant your flag and think big.

Draft For Year Two

I get it, you want to win every season. There are also no guarantees in sports, especially in fantasy football. You don’t know what’s going to happen, and your success in any given season could come down to one week. The best approach is to draft as if you’re forming your 2027 (Year 2) starting lineup. That sets you up for success not only this year, but into the future.
