Depending on who you ask, Week 2 was either a very good week or a very frustrating week. In general, offense was more dialed back than Week 1, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t have some strong performers. Let’s jump right into our Week 3 RB rankings for fantasy football.

Running Back Notes

Chuba Hubbard, Carolina Panthers

Entering the season, there was a lot of concern, rightfully so, about Jonathon Brooks overtaking Hubbard in the Panthers’ backfield. While there’s still a chance that it takes place, through the first two games of the season, it doesn’t appear to be the case. Hubbard carried the ball 12 times in Week 2 compared to five for Brooks. The latter did exit the game in the fourth quarter with a groin injury, but he’s been a non-factor through the first two weeks of the season. It’s possible that there’s still rust involved as he works back to full strength, but it’s getting difficult to continue rostering Brooks.

Hubbard, on the other hand, deserves our attention, at least for the short term. From a fantasy points allowed standpoint, Hubbard’s opponent (the Cleveland Browns) have been middle of the pack through the first weeks of the season.

In each game this season, Hubbard has a receiving touchdown. With Rico Dowdle departing for Pittsburgh in the off-season, it’s been beneficial to see Hubbard step up in this area. Granted, he has a combined five receptions for 49 yards, but there’s value to being a part of Carolina’s ascending passing game. He’s also averaging 4.6 yards per carry in what’s been a solid start to Hubbard’s season.

Aaron Jones, Minnesota Vikings

No Jordan Mason, no problem. In a game where weather was a clear issue last week, Jones stepped up and took advantage of the situation. Minnesota needed to move the ball on the ground and control the tempo, and Jones allowed them to do just that. The veteran finished with 23 carries for 105 yards, and he should continue with a similar performance in Week 3. Only this time, weather shouldn’t be an issue as the veteran looks to have another strong game while finding the end zone for the first time this season. From a fantasy football perspective, Jones should continue to take advantage of Mason’s absence.

Jeremiyah Love, Arizona Cardinals

Patience is a virtue here. There’s a reason why Love was drafted when he was, and it’s important to remember that. It’s also important to remember that, despite all of his talent, upside, and success in college last season, Love is still a rookie. And the Cardinals aren’t very good, which means there’s not much in the rising tide department to lift Love’s boat. It also means they’ll be trailing in a lot of games, which removes the run game as an option.

Love did rush for a touchdown in his debut, but 11 carries for 41 yards isn’t exactly noteworthy. Things transpired in a similar manner in Week 2 as the rookie never had a chance to get anything going on the ground. He finished with nine carries for 29 yards, and had a combined five receptions for 25 yards on the season.

Things have to get better for Love, and we know he’s capable of it. The problem is that it might take some time to see it, and Love has to remain on your roster as he does so. In Week 3, in a game where the Cardinals are expected to trail the San Francisco 49ers, I’m not expecting it to happen.
