The pressure is on. You’ve been waiting for this moment, the beginning of the 2025 fantasy football season, for months. The excitement level and enthusiasm are through the roof. I mean, why wouldn’t they be? But now, you can’t mess it up. We know there are a lot of factors that go into having a successful fantasy football season. Some are within your control, and some unfortunately aren’t. You can’t mess it up. While it’s close to impossible to have a perfect fantasy football draft, let’s take a look at five draft mistakes that could derail your season before it begins.

What!? Your fantasy football league wasn’t hosted on Fantrax last season!? Once you see how Fantrax stacks up to the competition, we think you’ll be singing a different tune in the 2025 season.

5 Draft Mistakes to Avoid

Not Knowing the Rules/Format/Scoring of Your League

Fantasy football is about a lot more than just knowing the player pool. The football is the fun part. Watching the games, reading the news, and breaking down the players. All of that is what attracts us to this great game. Debating whether Bijan Robinson or Saquon Barkley is the better running back for 2025 is what generates excitement.

But what if your league allows the ability to start two quarterbacks? Is Robinson or Lamar Jackson the better pick? Then what do you do in the second round? Do tight ends get a point bonus? Does that mean you should draft Brock Bowers?

None of those questions, or their subsequent answers, have anything to do with understanding the game of football. But they might be just as important as completing your rankings, if not more important.

Every league is different. Unless noted otherwise, the majority of what you see in your research is geared towards basic leagues, with the lone difference being whether a point per reception is awarded. However, that doesn’t mean your league fits into that.

One of the biggest draft day mistakes is not knowing what you are drafting for. This can erase all of your hard work and player evaluation.

Entering the Draft with Outdated News

Things change by the minute across the NFL. Rankings and content could potentially be outdated as soon as they’re published. It’s a fact of life, and there’s nothing wrong with it, but we do need to be aware of it.

On a daily basis, at a minimum, it’s important to stay up to date with all of the news. Every piece of news generates ripple effects across the league, and it’s important to incorporate those into your rankings. The key, though, is to correctly react, but not overreact, to the news.

Not Having Your Own Ranks and Being Unorganized

Alright, the time is now. The buzzer goes off, and it’s time to pick. What do you do? You have been waiting for this moment for months, and so much is riding on it.

It’s important to have your own ranks and to be comfortable and prepared with them. The easiest answer is to follow your ranks, but it’s also not that easy. There’s a strategy to follow and decisions to make. Translating your ranks into a plan prior to the draft is imperative.

You have a limited amount of time on the clock to make your draft choice. Have your rankings, the rules, your plan, the updated news, and anything else needed set up prior to the draft. This level of organization is imperative. Having to scramble while on the clock only leads to unnecessary stress and potential mistakes.

Not Utilizing a Plan Correctly

At this point, we’ve established that you need to enter your draft with a plan. However, it can’t be the be-all, end-all. Your plan needs to have multiple levels because drafts never go according to plan. There needs to be various options for you with clear pivots available at all times.

However, once the first pick of a draft is made, the plan, or at least Plan A, likely has gone out the window. As the draft evolves, you must adjust with it. Make your plan, but don’t stay too close to it either. Being paralyzed by your plan could be even worse than not having a plan.

Not Pivoting or Adjusting During the Draft

It doesn’t matter how many drafts you do, as no two drafts are ever the same. Your ability to recognize this and to adjust at multiple points during the draft cannot be overstated.

If you notice, when it comes to potential draft day mistakes, it’s less about the football and more about the game theory. I trust that you know the player pool and can complete your rankings, but applying them is ultimately what matters. Some will be better than others at completing their rankings and evaluating their options, but answering these questions prior to the season is impossible. What you need to do, though, is to stay liquid and adjust during the draft based on how things are progressing.
