Hed: Fantasy Football 2023: Week 8 Players To Drop

As Week 8 we are getting closer and closer to the playoffs, so if you are holding out hopes for players you drafted, I’m sorry but it is time to drop.

The closer and closer we get to the playoffs, the more crucial the waiver wire is. If you’re still waiting for Cam Akers to take over the Vikings backfield, sorry but it is time to drop him. You need to play who is hot and not hold out hopes for a breakout.

Now, let’s cut some players loose.

Players to Drop for Week 8

Antonio Gibson, Running Back, Washington Commanders

After Week 7 it looks like Antonio Gibson is the third-string running back on the team. Brian Robinson Jr. is the lead back and Chris Rodriguez Jr. is the backup. Robinson had eight carries for 23 yards and a touchdown and Rodriguez had seven carries for 31 yards. While Gibson had two carries for seven yards. The Commanders don’t run the ball well as a team, so I wouldn’t hold out that Gibson can save your team.

Cam Akers, Running Back, Minnesota Vikings

It looked like Alexander Mattison could lose his job as the Vikings traded for Akers. But it is Mattison who is getting all the work. Last week Mattison had 18 carries and Akers had one. To put it in perspective Weeks 4-6 Akers has 11 carries for 63 yards. Mattison has 43 carries for 165 yards. This is Mattison’s backfield. Drop or trade Akers while you can.

Craig Reynolds, Running Back, Detroit Lions

David Montgomery is out and Jahmyr Gibbs has been up and down, so it looks like Craig Reynolds would be a great pickup. Nope, Gibbs still had all the volume and a touchdown as well in Week 7. Reynolds had three carries for 16 yards while Gibbs had 11 carries for 68 yards and a touchdown. Don’t hold on to Reynolds especially with Montgomery coming back.

Quentin Johnston, Wide Receiver, Los Angeles Chargers

With Mike Williams going down, it looked like Quentin Johnston would fill his role. But his season high in PPR scoring is three. It looks like he isn’t ready for the NFL as he has 13 targets on the season. Joshua Palmer is a better option to go with.

Michael Wilson, Wide Receiver, Arizona Cardinals

Michael Wilson had a huge game back in Week 4 going for 76 yards and two touchdowns on seven receptions. But, since then, he has been quiet. Scoring only 2.8 and 9.2 fantasy points in his last two games. And the targets went down as well.

Jerry Jeudy, Wide Receiver, Denver Broncos

The Broncos just aren’t a good fantasy team this year and Jerry Jeudy is just about unstartable if you want to win. He has only gone over double digits in PPR scoring just twice this season. Courtland Sutton is the only startable receiver on this team.

Players on the Chopping Block

Chris Godwin, Wide Receiver, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

I wouldn’t say drop Chris Godwin as he is still solid. But he is on the chopping block in terms of, you need to trade him now. He is still getting receptions and yards but not at a huge haul like he is used to. He still hasn’t scored a touchdown on the season as Mike Evans is racking in all the touchdowns. Trade Godwin before it is too late.

Calvin Ridley, Wide Receiver, Jacksonville Jaguars

Calvin Ridley is in the same boat. I wouldn’t drop him until the playoffs if he is still not producing. But, just based on upside you could package Ridley with a running back and snag yourself a more consistent wide receiver like Puka Nacua.
