Week 17 DST Streamers
Last Week’s Stashes: New England Patriots, Detroit Lions, New York Giants, Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys
New England Patriots (at New York Jets)
Fantrax Rostership: 90% (Other Platforms: 50% – 72%)
After performing as one of the best DSTs in the league, the Patriots have finally hit a rough patch in an otherwise easy schedule. With games against the Bengals, Bills, and Ravens in recent weeks, rostership has dropped. This week, the Patriots face a Jets team that just allowed the Saints to finish as the DST1. Brady Cook will once again start against the Patriots.
Cook has had a rough time in a difficult situation. The undrafted rookie has thrown just 1 TD to 6 INTs while getting sacked 17 times in 3 games. The Patriots are already a top-10 fantasy defense, and they should feast in Week 17.
Detroit Lions (at Minnesota Vikings)
Fantrax Rostership: 95% (Other Platforms: 54% – 60%)
Injuries continue to destroy the Lions as they fall out of the playoffs. This week’s matchup against the Vikings comes at a pivotal moment as they look to bounce back from a brutal loss to the Steelers. In recent weeks, the Lions’ DST has failed to generate fantasy points. That’s not just when facing great offenses, but against some weaker matchups as well.
The Vikings have allowed the 3rd most fantasy points to opposing DSTs, and Detroit put up 7 points in this same matchup at the start of November. Since then, the Vikings have only scored 20 or more points against the Cowboys and Commanders, bottom-5 defenses. In his four other games since playing the Lions, J.J. McCarthy has scored 4 TDs while averaging fewer than 200 total yards per game and throwing 7 interceptions. McCarthy is also getting sacked at the 3rd-highest rate in the league.
Detroit is a risky play, but they have a lot to play for and get a great matchup. Stream them if you need a home run.
Pittsburgh Steelers (at Cleveland Browns)
Fantrax Rostership: 99% (Other Platforms: 58% – 66%)
Despite another up-and-down year under Mike Tomlin, the Steelers DST ranks 8th this year. With the division in the palm of their hands, Pittsburgh will visit the lowly Cleveland Browns in an important divisional matchup.
Shedeur Sanders has made this Browns offense look better than before, beating the Raiders and getting within a score of the Titans and Bills. Despite that, he still struggles with turnovers. The Browns have only combined for 300 or more yards of offense once in the last 10 games, and they struggled mightily when they visited the Steelers back in October. Dillon Gabriel was the starter and could even play in this contest.
It may not seem like it, but the Steelers rank 10th in defensive DVOA. They’ve also been great at stopping the run, shutting down the Lions last week. 1st round pick Derrick Harmon has been a force on the defensive line with Cam Heyward, and the rest of the pass rush is picking up the slack with T.J. Watt out. The Browns should do better than last time, especially at home, but you can stream the Steelers and expect a good floor in the fantasy championship.
Jacksonville Jaguars (at Indianapolis Colts)
Fantrax Rostership: 85% (Other Platforms: 52% – 62%)
The Jaguars are the hottest team in the league. Whether it’s Trevor Lawrence dealing or the defense averaging nearly two turnovers a game, this could be the team to beat in the AFC. The DST3 on the season visits a Colts team that lost Daniel Jones for the year, but can still make the playoffs with a miracle.
Phillip Rivers showed that veteran QBs, even on the very old side, still have a place in this league. Mistakes will still be made, and his arm isn’t going to look like the good old days, but the man can still run a solid offense. I’m just not convinced that what he did against an injured and struggling 49ers defense is indicative of his end to the season. Jacksonville is a much bigger challenge.
Jacksonville has gone 7 straight games with a double-digit fantasy performance. The red-hot offense has kept teams throwing, and they have capitalized with plenty of turnovers. There are only a handful of defenses you can reasonably start against any opponent. The Jaguars are not in the elite tier, but they’re pretty close. Rivers isn’t going to do anything too stupid, but he is still vulnerable. The Jaguars are worth consideration to close out the fantasy season.
New York Giants (at Las Vegas Raiders)
Fantrax Rostership: 49% (Other Platforms: 5% – 11%)
The Giants have had a rough schedule as far as DST streamers go. The Saints and Vikings have been their only top-10 matchups this year. While still a far cry from a strong defense, this is a matchup they can take advantage of. The Raiders are the best DST matchup in the league, and that should continue to be the case.
Geno Smith is having his worst season since 2014. Smith leads the league in interceptions with 15, has taken a league-high 52 sacks, and is barely averaging more than 200 passing yards per game. This was a lost year early on in the season, and it’s clear that a lot of work needs to be done.
The Giants don’t boast the strongest defense in the league, but they can get pressure against a putrid offensive line. Brian Burns has been a rare bright spot on defense, with 15 sacks so far this year – 2nd in the league. Ashton Jeanty and Brock Bowers are still monsters, but they may not be enough to sink the Giants. They’re a low-rostered DST streaming option with a great matchup in Week 17.
