G5 Waiver Wire Rescues

Quarterbacks

Liam Szarka, Air Force

Fantrax Rostership: 20%
Total Fantasy Points: 103.3
Fantasy Points Per Game: 25.8

Liam Szarka came on in relief against Boise State in Week 4 and racked up 37.02 points. In Week 5, he was a one-man wrecking crew against Hawaii. Liam accounted for 404 yards of offense and had three touchdowns, which was good for 41.02 points. It’s important to realize Szarka has thrown for over 240 yards in back-to-back weeks. While Navy is accustomed to the option offense and has a pretty stout defense, I look for Liam Szarka to be a solid option as a G5 Waiver Wire Rescue to many lineups this week.

Brendon Lewis, Memphis

Fantrax Rostership: 38%
Total Fantasy Points: 103.3
Fantasy Points Per Game: 25.8

Brendon Lewis has put up back-to-back great fantasy weeks of 34.26 points (Arkansas) and 35.84 points (Florida Atlantic). The Memphis Tigers have a date with Tulsa in Week 6. Tulsa allowed 18.58 points to Jake Retzlaff (Tulane) in Week 5 and 25.66 points to Blake Horvath (Navy) a few weeks prior. Due to these outputs against the Golden Hurricane defense and the spectacular play of Brendon Lewis, I look for good things to continue in Week 6. As a result, Lewis could be the G5 Waiver Wire Rescue your team needs this week and beyond.

*Quick note: When I wrote this article, Brendon Lewis was 9% owned. He has now climbed to 38% ownership. For a bonus quarterback, I would suggest Logan Fife. The New Mexico State quarterback is 2% owned. For details on why I like Fife, please check out the tight end section.

Running Backs

Wayne Knight, James Madison University (JMU)

Fantrax Rostership: 18%
Total Fantasy Points: 66.7
Fantasy Points Per Game: 22.2

Wayne Knight has produced back-to-back weeks of 20+ points. Wayne dropped 20.6 points on Liberty in Week 4 and 28.6 points against Georgia Southern in Week 5. Knight is averaging 22 touches, 151 yards, and one touchdown over the last two weeks. JMU plays Georgia State in Week 6. Georgia State has only played one G5 opponent thus far, and that was Memphis. The Tigers ran for 205 yards and four touchdowns in that contest. Furthermore, Georgia State played an FCS opponent in Murray State. Murray State ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns when they squared up in Week 3. Because of these reasons, I believe Knight is an excellent G5 Waiver Wire Rescue ahead of Week 6.

Nahree Biggins, Central Michigan University (CMU)

Fantrax Rostership: 9%
Total Fantasy Points: 61.8
Fantasy Points Per Game: 12.4

Nahree Biggins has had back-to-back weeks of 20+ points himself. He scored 21.1 against Wagner in Week 4 and 22.6 in Week 5 against Eastern Michigan. He is also seeing targets out of the backfield, which helps with total touches throughout the game. Biggins led the backfield amongst running backs with 14 carries last week. Conversely, Townsend had eight carries and Cornist had three. Given his performances over the last two weeks, I think we see this trend continue as Biggins looks to be the most explosive back for the Chippewas.

Central Michigan will be on the road in Week 6 to face off with Akron. Akron is coming off its bye week, but the week prior, we saw Toledo rush for 252 yards and three touchdowns. While there will still likely be a rotation and involvement from the quarterback in the running game, I believe Nahree Biggins provides a safe floor. Depending on team needs during this massive bye week, Biggins could be the G5 Waiver Wire Rescue you lean on in Week 6.

Wide Receivers

Cortez Braham, Memphis

Fantrax Rostership: 18%
Total Fantasy Points: 84.2
Fantasy Points Per Game: 16.8

Last week, I highlighted Cortez Braham in The G5 Hive Week 4 Waiver Wire Honey. We continue to see his usage climb, as he was a late transfer from Nevada. He followed up his 10.9 and 23.2 point performances with 30.7 points in Week 5 against Florida Atlantic University. Over the last three games, he has averaged five catches on eight targets for 99 yards and one touchdown. In fact, Cortez has had back-to-back 100+ yard receiving games.

Tulsa is the Tigers’ Week 6 opponent. Tulsa most recently allowed two Tulane wide receivers to score 12.9 and 10.4 fantasy points against them. Memphis has been funneling passes to Braham, as he is averaging 46.4% of the receptions over their last two games. All in all, I look for Braham to continue to find success in this offense in Week 6. He undoubtedly provides you with a solid floor and a high ceiling. If he is not already, Cortez Braham should be on your radar as a G5 Waiver Wire Rescue for this week.

Brandon “BJ” Hawkins, University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB)

Fantrax Rostership: 0%
Total Fantasy Points: 41.9
Fantasy Points Per Game: 10.5

Brandon Hawkins can be found under BJ Hawkins in Fantrax. Hawkins has seen three straight games of five targets or more. In fact, he has seen 17 targets over those three weeks. Brandon has turned those 17 targets into 14 receptions for 148 yards. Two weeks ago, we saw him put up 19.9 points against Tennessee. Subsequently, their top wide receiver, Corri Milliner, is set to miss some time. Milliner had scored 20.8, 22, and 19 fantasy points during that same three-game stretch. Given that, I look for Brandon Hawkins to get more looks going forward. Thus, Brandon “BJ” Hawkins is a name to consider if you are in need of a G5 Waiver Wire Rescue at the wide receiver position.

Tight Ends

Gavin Harris, New Mexico State

Fantrax Rostership: 5%
Total Fantasy Points: 43.7
Fantasy Points Per Game: 10.9

Gavin Harris continues his tear through the G5. He is averaging three receptions on six targets for 56 yards. Harris has had fantasy outputs of: 7.4, 12.4, 8.2, and 15.7 over the Aggies’ last four games. Sam Houston is on deck for New Mexico State in Week 6.

I want to particularly highlight this matchup because Sam Houston’s defense has allowed opponents to visit the red zone 19 times. Opponents are a perfect 19 of 19 in coming away with points. Of those 19 visits to the red zone, 14 have been touchdowns. Of the 14 touchdowns, six have been of the passing variety. Simultaneously, Sam Houston is allowing the 2nd most passing touchdowns in the red zone. Gavin Harris’ usage coupled with the matchup makes Harris the plug-and-play tight end you are looking for in Week 6 as your G5 Waiver Wire Rescue at the tight end position.

There you have it! Although one player was over the 30% threshold, I made up for things and identified eight G5 Waiver Wire Rescues! Your league-mates whiffed on these guys. If your league utilizes a Free Agent Acquisition Budget (FAAB), I bet you can get away with a small bid for any of these individuals.
