Dynasty Football Roster Construction Tips

Roster construction is the most essential part of your dynasty football teams. How you construct the roster will dictate the team’s future. Will you be tanking and hope Arch Manning declares in 2026, or will you try to compete for a title? The big macro decision will decide the direction of all of the micro decisions you make along the way. Below are tips on dynasty roster construction for both contenders and rebuilders.

Tips for Constructing Your Dynasty Football Roster

Don’t put too much emphasis on age

This tip works for both sides when constructing your dynasty roster. No matter who is in your league, someone will always be chasing the new star who is scoring points quickly in their young career. It is how it works, always has, and likely always will.

Is it nice to have the young stars? Of course. However, youth isn’t the only answer. Using the current ADP as an example, Omarion Hampton currently comes off the board as RB6 in dynasty formats. That is ahead of players like Bucky Irving, Jonathan Taylor, and Kyren Williams. Taylor and Williams have multiple RB1 finishes in their career, while Bucky Irving proved that he should be the star of the Tampa backfield down the stretch.

Omarion Hampton is an excellent prospect and landed in one of the best spots available. However, he has yet to take a regular-season snap in the NFL. There comes a point where the risk outweighs the reward, and this is just one of the many examples.

Rebuilders

If you are committed to being a rebuilder, Hampton or Irving would be unanimous picks. This strategy of not putting too much stock into ages is more for the later rounds when it comes to rebuilding. An ADP example would be Tony Pollard over Cam Skattebo despite Pollard going 22 picks later. You can trade down in this scenario while also picking up a player who will get the backfield to himself for the first few weeks. Then, be able to trade Pollard for future value instead of using the pick on a crowded backfield. So look for veteran values later in drafts that contending teams may want. Another option in that scenario is just trading the pick. So, rebuilding teams have quite a few avenues and aren’t restricted to drafting age. The main takeaway is not to be afraid to take an older player. Either they become trade value or your team is ahead of schedule, and they greatly aid the team’s playoff chances.

Prioritize Quarterbacks in Superflex

Most dynasty leagues nowadays play with the superflex spot in their lineups. Not everyone, but a majority have started to play the format. Prioritizing quarterbacks is the most important thing you can do. Even more so if your league is six-point passing touchdowns instead of four. It helps to get a top-five pick to pick one of the elite guys. However, if you do not get lucky, do not panic. Patrick Mahomes is an option late in round one. Or you could wait for Justin Herbert or Caleb Williams in round two. The priority is to get at least one high upside quarterback on the roster. Managers will continue to pick them even if they have two on their squad.

If you draft any of these guys, doubling up in the round after is an option. Or pushing your second quarterback down into round four with Kyler Murray and Brock Purdy is also an option.

The final option is just to punt the position and go with a combo of late-round quarterbacks like Bryce Young and Michael Penix Jr. Any of these strategies works. However, if you do not land two quarterbacks in the first six or so rounds, you’re in trouble. It is key to remember that you are guaranteed to allocate capital early in drafts to the quarterback spot. Finding a quarterback is one of the hardest things to do. Dynasty managers got a gift with six starters in the 2024 draft. The next time we see something close to that is likely 2027. So if you do not allocate the proper capital, be prepared to rebuild and sit out of contention for the next two years.

Don’t Overinvest in a Position

This strategy is more for contenders, but it can also apply to rebuilders. When exiting a draft, the last thing anyone wants to do is to be caught with too much value at a certain position. This applies more so to the quarterback and the tight end. There will be temptation if a talented player starts to fall. And most would say to just take him. However, if it is a fourth quarterback early on or something in that realm, it is a sign to proceed with caution.

League mates will notice the surplus at the position and will not give fair value. Rebuilders will try to amass value, so they can get away with it. However, they should not expect a fair trade to come their way. So, playing the value game is the move, just do not overdo it, even if a player is falling. If a contender tries a move like that, it might jeopardize contender status. Dynasty roster construction is an art, and even just not making a small mistake like this can save rosters for years to come.

Conclusion

There are many ways to construct a dynasty roster, including fading a position into the later rounds, hyper-targeting a position, and a balanced build. Philosophies also affect roster building, as teams will declare themselves contenders or rebuilders after the first few rounds. The only position you can not afford to miss out on is quarterback, but beyond that, rosters can be built in numerous ways. So, don’t be afraid to make contrarian moves when constructing your dynasty roster. It may pay off in the long run.
