It’s time to get excited! The 2025 fantasy football season is here. The time leading up to the draft and the season is always the most exciting. Everyone is filled with optimism, excitement, positive vibes, and good thoughts. But then your first round pick tears an ACL. And then what? By no means is that wished on anyone, except maybe your opponents in the nicest way possible, but you have to plan for it. Well, roster depth and a handcuff could come into play here, but I mean from a league standpoint. What if said injury leads that team to a 1-6 start? The playoffs are out of reach, and then what? Here are some thoughts on how to keep your league engaged.
What!? Your fantasy football league wasn’t hosted on Fantrax last season!? Once you see how Fantrax stacks up to the competition, we think you’ll be singing a different tune in the 2025 season.
How to Keep Your League Engaged
Have a Live Draft
Now, I know this is difficult. Schedules are hard. Child care and work responsibilities can’t be ignored. Geography doesn’t always help, but this is important.
If you don’t know your league mates or feel a connection, then how can you be engaged?
Should the in-person draft not work, at least set up a Zoom video call to hammer out the draft. There’s nothing like having to answer for your draft picks in the flesh, or on camera.
Being together also puts a face to the name. Without it, you are essentially playing with anonymous faces. Granted, it could be a league in which everyone is connected, but not all the managers might have the same relationship. And having that human contact and the small talk generates relationships. You then feel accountable to the league and don’t want to embarrass yourself. Even if you can’t make the playoffs, you can still play spoiler or have a respectable showing.
Playing in a fantasy football league is a responsibility. You owe it to your league mates to be engaged the entire season. That starts on draft day.
Create a Text Chain
Draft day generates momentum. Once you leave the draft room, that’s something you want to hold onto. League members could have a relationship outside of the league, and in that sense, you are in good shape here. But if not, or if the relationship is more casual, you have to take things to the next level.
Trash talk and trade talks are the engine that makes fantasy leagues go. What better way to do so than by having a constant forum for that discussion? This helps to keep your league front of mind for all members.
Send Out Weekly Recaps
If you are in first place, there’s not much concern about your level of engagement. The 10th-place finisher that is new to fantasy football, that’s a different story. You want to give them bragging rights and something to look forward to, even when their weekly matchup might not matter.
Generating weekly recaps does just that. When that email or video link drops, it’s hard not to be filled with anticipation. You want to be able to take that victory lap in front of your league (and friends, family, co-workers, etc).
Creative Team Names
No, I don’t want to see your first and last name next to me on the scoreboard. I want to see something funny, clever, intelligent, or witty. Maybe all of the above. Make me think. Make me laugh.
Obviously, depending on your league mates, there has to be some level of standards here, whether it be PG-13, R, or NC-17. You need to make sure that no one goes over the line or is offensive. But other than that, go for it. Make things interesting. Change it up every week. Maybe if I beat you, I can determine your team name the following week? Have some fun. After all, this is a hobby.
Punishment for Last Place
Nothing brings people together quite like a meme. We see it all the time. Someone doing something ridiculous because they finished in last place. The benefits of this are two-fold.
The league gets a bonding moment, some funny stories, and memories out of it. And, perhaps more importantly, no one really wants to finish in last place. That will get people setting their lineups in Week 13.
Weekly Winners
Teams are going to be eliminated from postseason contention at varying points of the season. At that point, yes, there’s nothing to play for. But if weekly winners were in play, each week is a brand new game and opportunity for them.
Make it a Keeper or Dynasty League
Now, even if you are in last place, you are still involved. At this point, your season never truly ends. This means you have to stay engaged.
