Defense wins championships. What is almost half of an NFL game (We have to give Special Teams some due) is rendered as a mere footnote in fantasy football. This isn’t to say we have to start drafting Team Defenses in the top-five rounds, but we shouldn’t dismiss the roster spot either. As we head into the 2025 fantasy football season, let’s take a look at my defense rankings.

Defense Strategy
Matchups Matter
Football is not played in a vacuum. Life would be a lot easier if that were true, but that’s far from the case. It’s clear that there are some defenses that are better than others. Some of that success is based on talent and scheme, but some is purely matchup-based. Certain opponents are more hospitable to the defenses they face. I’d rather start the 15th-ranked defense against the 28th-ranked offense instead of the 2nd-best defense facing the 4th-best offense. There is a real advantage in targeting weaker offenses.
Streaming is Your Friend
Roster management and roster flexibility should never be far from your thought process. Streaming your defense is one way to accomplish this. The biggest thing you are looking for, is favorable matchups. This helps to minimize risk from facing a strong offense while maximizing upside.
Things Change
As much as we’d like to plan out the 2025 season before Week 1, that’s simply not practical. It’s important to remember, though, that things change from both spectrums. Defenses that we thought were going to be good (or bad) go in opposite directions. There are multiple reasons for this, injuries included. However, the same could be said for opponents as you look to stream and find favorable matchups. Don’t be afraid to change course.
Target Turnovers and Sacks
Before going any further, the caveat here is to check your league settings. Every league is different and comes with different sets of scoring criteria. If we are going to paint with a broad brush, though, turnovers and sacks are where it’s at. They offer the largest amount of upside, and that’s what we are after. While we don’t want to go too far into the negative with points allowed, there’s generally limited risk here.
Don’t Be the First
By now, you’ve likely caught on to my strategy. To a degree, the expectation is that there will always be a revolving door, although don’t get too overly aggressive. But if you are going to be searching for the best matchup on the waiver wire, why should you rush to draft your defense on draft day? Exercise some patience here and don’t reach.
