Welcome back. Â The end of the fantasy hockey season is creeping up quickly. It is closer than it first appears. The NHL is about to shut down for two weeks for the Four Nations Cup. Remove those two weeks and we’re on the cusp. Let’s take a look at the biggest happenings from week 17 of fantasy hockey.
Let’s dive in.
Week 17 of Fantasy Hockey:
Thomas Harley, D, Dallas Stars
It was announced today that Miro Heiskanen underwent knee surgery and is now month-to-month.
Harley has taken over the first power play duties since he went down. Heiskanen being out longer-term gives Harley a huge opportunity to showcase that he can effectively run the first power play. He’s picked up three points, one on the power play over his last two games.
Aliaksei Protas, LW, Washington Capitals
His six-game point streak came to an end on February 1st. Yet, there’s no sign of this breakout season slowing.
Logan Thompson, G, Washington Capitals
Thompson picked up a rare loss on February 1st. The loss came just two minutes into overtime against the Winnipeg Jets. It marks just the fifth time all season, in 30 games, Thompson has given up four or more goals. His last regulation loss came on December 17th. It still boggles my mind he was not selected for Team Canada.
Ilya Sorokin, G, New York Islanders
Sorokin has now rung off seven straight wins. He has nine wins in his last ten games. By and large, it had been a disappointing season for Sorokin.
With this recent resurgence, the Islanders find themselves in the Wild Card conversation. His hot play should also reignite the ‘who’s the better goalie?’ argument that rages between the Islanders and the New York Rangers.
Tony DeAngelo, D, New York Islanders
This is looking like a great signing. At $ 775,000 for one year, it is as low-risk a signing as it gets. He now has four points in his first six games and has been playing huge minutes.
He’s averaging 25:26 per game. This is a far cry from the 14:20 with healthy scratches he averaged last year with the Carolina Hurricanes. His offensive ability was never the problem or the concern.
Jake Sanderson, D, Ottawa Senators
He’s been on fire lately. What was a solid third season is turning into a great third season. Sanderson had a huge week 17 of fantasy hockey. In three games he picked up seven points on ten shots. Three of those points came on the power play.
Tage Thompson, C/LW, Buffalo Sabres
Thompson also had a huge week 17 of fantasy hockey with eight points in three games. Including a hat trick, with an assist, on six shots. He looks a lot more like the dominant Tage from 2022-23 than the one we saw in 2023-24. He’s currently on pace for 85 points.
Cole Perfetti, LW/RW, Winnipeg Jets
Perfetti traded one streak for another. After going pointless in 13 of 14, Perfetti now has eight points in his last six. He’s now played 195 and is on his breakout threshold.
If he could eliminate the long stretches of no points, Perfetti would be on pace for sixty points. There’s a strong chance Perfetti is destined for a sizeable jump in production over the last 30 games. This recent hot streak might just be the beginning of his breakout.
MacKenzie Blackwood, G, Colorado Avalanche
Blackwood was dominant in week 17 of fantasy hockey. With back-to-back shutouts, Blackwood helped out a lot of his owners.
Morgan Geekie, C/LW, Boston Bruins
He continues to have a solid season. His point production is masked by a horrible first 19 games where he only put up 5 points. Since then, Geekie has 23 points in 31 games. That is a respectable 61-point pace. He’s currently rostered on just 32% of Fantrax pools. If you’re looking for under-the-radar production, maybe give Geekie a gander.
Barrett Hayton, C/LW, Utah Hockey Club
Hayton is putting together an offensive season that is getting a few looks from fantasy owners. Especially over the last 11 games where he’s produced 1o points. Surprisingly, he’s owned in 42% of Fantrax hockey leagues. Perhaps there’s some draft pedigree bias taking place.
Linus Ullmark, G, Ottawa Senators
Ullmark returned to action last night. I know, it’s technically week 19, but his return is significant. The Senators have played themselves into a playoff spot in his absence. It will be fun to see how this team performs with their best goalie back in the crease.
Ullmark should see his fair share of starts and wins with this rejuvenated team in front of him.
Yegor Sharangovich, LW/RW, Calgary Flames
Put these comments in the gut feeling category. Sharangovich has seen consistent top-six and power-play deployment all season. Yet, he only has 21 points in 46 games. That 37-point pace is a far cry from the 59 points he produced last year.
His advanced stats (five-on-five shooting percentage, individual point percentage (both five-on-five and power play), shots per 6o minutes, and goals per 60 minutes), are all the lowest of of his career.
If you’re looking for a player with signs of bursting out of a season-long slump, take a look at Sharangovich. He’s owned 41% of Fantrax pools, so some GMs have taken notice.
Ryan Hartman, C/RW, Minnesota Wild
Hartman was suspended for 10 games for driving Tim Stutzle’s, C, Ottawa Senators, head into the ice after a face-off. If you’re wondering why so harsh, it was determined there was intent to injure.
Hartman isn’t a huge fantasy loss. He’s a fringe fantasy option. Multi-cat pools he possesses a bit more value.
Alexander Ovechkin, LW, Washinton Capitals
Career Goals: 878 (25 on the season)
Gretzky’s Record: 894
To Tie Record: 16 Goals
To Break Record: 17 Goals
He’s currently riding a three-game goal streak. Ovechkin continues his assault on history.
That will do it for this week. Thanks for reading.
