Attacking the Green!: 2026 Cognizant Classic Stats Breakdown and Best Bets

The PGA Tour kicks off the Florida Swing with the Cognizant Classic at PGA National, a par-71 measuring 7,223 yards that annually ranks among the five toughest scoring tests on Tour. After two straight signature events, we are back to full field golf with a cut of Top 65 & ties after 36 holes. The downfall of being the first event on the Florida Swing, following two signature events, is a weak field that includes just one of the Top 10(Ben Griffin) and nine of the Top 50 golfers in the DataGolf World rankings.

In this article, we are going to preview the course and look at three key stats and trends that could lead us to betting success this week. Let’s get started.

The Course: PGA National (The Champion)

For the third straight year, PGA National will play as a Par 71 and comes in at 7,223 yards on the scorecard, 78 yards of added length from last year. As I mentioned in the intro, it is one of the toughest tests on tour, and it starts off the tee with some of the narrowest fairways on tour. This, combined with water danger all over the place, forces a ton of “less than driver” strategies. With that, the approach becomes even more terrifying as you not only have to worry about water but will have to navigate it with mid to long irons. Because of those factors, we normally see Greens in Regulation rates much lower than tour average. If you don’t have a solid iron game this week, you’d better have a solid short game. The other big change from the West Coast swing is the influx of fast Bermuda greens.

Stats & Trends That Matter: Finding the 2026 Cognizant Classic Champion

Strokes Gained: Approach

With an abundance of danger around the greens, a pinpoint iron game is essential this week. When breaking down the proximity buckets, I will be focusing on the 150-200 yard range, as we normally see around 40-45% of all approaches come from this zone, which is about 5% more than tour average.

Ryan Gerard (+2700 Outright / +240 Top 10)

After finishing 4th in the field last week at the Genesis Invitational, Gerard now sits Top 15 on tour in Strokes Gained: Approach and 5th in this week’s field. He also ranks 9th and 24th in this field when looking at the core proximity ranges.

He somewhat came back down to Earth the last two weeks in elite field events after a hot start(2nd, 2nd, 11th), but the good news is this is another weak field event so I fully expect to see him on the leaderboard come Sunday. It helps that he also has a terrific course history here, finishing 4th in 2023 and 25th last season.

Shane Lowry (+2100 Outright / +205 Top 10)

Starting his season with back-to-back signature events, Lowry has looked good with a 8th and 24th place finish. The iron game has led the way as he sits tied with Gerard in Strokes Gained: Approach(+.81) for the season. On top of the irons that fit this week’s model, he has been accurate off the tee (6th in this field) and is also putting well (14th in the field). He now comes back to PGA National, where he has enjoyed a ton of success, finishing 11th or better in four straight trips, including a runner-up in 2022.

Strokes Gained: Off the Tee/Total Driving

It is a bit of a balancing act this week off the tee. There is danger everywhere so you need to be accurate, but if you can also bomb down the fairways, you gain a big advantage in having shorter irons on approach.

David Ford (+14500 Outright / +890 Top 10 / +385 Top 20)

In this weaker field, I will be looking at a few longshots and Ford is one that stands out. He dominated in college, setting records and earning his PGA Tour card, finishing #1 in the PGA University rankings. He ranks 2nd in this field in total driving, which should play very well when combined with excellent iron play, as he sits 7th in the field in SG: Approach. While I will sprinkle some on the outright, I am most interested in the Top 10 and Top 20 markets this week.

Haotong Li (+4300 Outright / +370 Top 10)

He is coming off a missed cut at the WM Phoenix Open, but has the profile to get back on track this week at the Cognizant Classic. Despite that dud in Phoenix, he is 2nd in this field in SG: Tee to Green, 5th in SG: Off the Tee, 17th in Total Driving, 11th in Par 4 Scoring, and 22nd in SG: Around the Green. The putting is the one thing that has held him back bu the good news is that he has gained strokes in five of his last seven events, which has led to three finishes of 11th or better. I will have exposure in the outright and Top 10 markets this week.

Bogey Avoidance

With all the water in play at PGA National, avoiding bogeys is crucial to success this week.

Nicolai Hojgaard (+2450 Outright / +240 Top 10)

Hojgaard is #2 in Bogey Avoidance in this field but stands out for more reasons, as well. He has been an excellent scrambler(4th) and also leads the field in SG: Tee to Green, is 5th in Driving Distance, 12th in Par 4 Scoring, and 1st in Scoring Average. He has only played two events so far in 2026, but came away with a T22 at the Farmers and a T3 at the WMPO. He is also coming off a T18 here last year, and I feel his current form and stats profile have him inside the Top 10 in 2026 and competing for a win!

Andrew Putnam (+380 Top 20)

I am not looking for a lot here from Putnam, who checks a lot of boxes this week. The sample size is small, but he sits 17th in Bogey Avoidance and 4th in BoB% thanks to a very impressive T2 at the AMEX in January. He is very accurate off the tee(1st), has been crushing par 4’s(3rd), and is a very good putter on Bermuda greens. Add in the impressive 11th-place finish here last year, and I think he gets back inside the Top 20 this week.
