Running Back Notes

De’Von Achane, Miami Dolphins

There’s no great way to say it, but Achane and the Dolphins’ offense didn’t look good on Sunday. They weren’t able to get anything going, and while Achane did have 15 touches, it was only good for 66 yards. He caught four passes, so that helped from a PPR perspective, but Achane failed to make his presence felt against a Las Vegas Raiders that looked better than expected. However, it could just be that the Dolphins are not very good.

Achane is still going to be the focal point of Miami’s offense, so there shouldn’t be too much concern from that perspective. It’s another tough matchup against the San Francisco 49ers, but it’s too early to consider parking Achane on your bench. At the very least, he should provide value as a dump-off receiving option as Miami plays from behind.

Marshawn Lynch, Green Bay Packers

Lynch got the chance on Sunday, but he didn’t do much with that chance. Receiving increased playing time due to Josh Jacobs’ suspension, Lynch carried the ball 13 times compared to seven for Chris Brooks. There was a clear emphasis on the passing game for the Packers, but it was a good sign to see Lynch eclipse Brooks in carries. The bad news though, is that Lynch rushed for just 37 yards while Brooks picked up 29 yards. I’d expect things to be similar again this week, but it’s still unclear how much we can trust either back. If you need to pick one though, it’s still going to be Lynch.

Kenneth Gainwell, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

There was a fair amount of buzz surrounding Gainwell entering the season as a Flex option. Then with Sean Tucker sidelined for Week 1 and a high scoring game expected, the thought was that Gainwell would have a strong week. Instead, the Buccaneers fell behind early and Gainwell was a non-factor. He carried the ball five times, for just 15 yards, and only caught one pass for three yards. Things should be a lot better for Gainwell and the Buccaneers this week against the Cleveland Browns, but I wouldn’t force him into your lineup. It’s also too early to act on your concerens about his struggles last week.

Bhayshul Tuten, Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars faced little resistance against the Browns in Week 1, and they took advantage of the situation. More importantly, it was clear that the Jacksonville backfield belongs to Tuten. Despite the score being so one-sided and Tuten exiting early, he still had 15 carries compared to six for Chris Rodriguez. Tuten gained 66 yards while catching one pass for 22 yards. Despite the fact that Kenneth Walker ran all over the Denver Broncos in Week 1, it should be a more difficult matchup for Tuten. The good news, is that workload should be there as he had a solid debut performance.
