As we get deeper into the fantasy football season, every week becomes more important for managers trying to secure a playoff spot or stay alive in their leagues. Week 9 is a crucial point in the season, and making the right start/sit decisions can be the difference between a win and a loss.
That’s why I’m making three bold Week 9 predictions, focusing on players who could exceed expectations and deliver big fantasy performances. These predictions aren’t the safest calls, but they’re based on recent trends, favorable matchups, and the opportunity for these players to step up when it matters most.

3 Bold Predictions for Fantasy Football Week 9
J.J. McCarthy finishes as a top-10 fantasy QB vs. Philadelphia
McCarthy has thrown for 495 yards, one touchdown, and one interception in his 2026 appearances. His most recent performance was his best yet, as he completed 28 passes for 252 yards against Houston.
The sample size is small, but McCarthy has shown the ability to move the ball downfield. He also brings the ability to keep plays alive with his legs and the arm talent to push the ball downfield, which makes him an intriguing fantasy option if he can put it all together.
He’s averaging nine yards per attempt over his last two games, and his completion percentage has been trending upward. If he can continue that trajectory, he could be in line for a breakout performance in Week 9.
The Case for McCarthy
The biggest reason I’m making this prediction is the opportunity for McCarthy to build on his latest performance. He completed 28 passes for 252 yards against Houston, and that kind of volume could translate to a big fantasy day if he can find the end zone.
The bye week also gives the Vikings additional time to prepare their offense and get McCarthy ready for this matchup. That extra preparation could be the difference in helping him take the next step as a passer.
How the Defensive Matchup Could Help
Philadelphia has struggled defensively through the first eight weeks. The Eagles are allowing 371.3 total yards per game, which ranks 24th in the NFL. They’ve also allowed the 10th-most fantasy points to quarterbacks this season.
That creates an opportunity for McCarthy to have success through the air. Philadelphia has allowed multiple passing touchdowns in five of their eight games, and McCarthy could take advantage of a secondary that has been vulnerable to big plays.
The Takeaway
This is definitely an aggressive prediction considering McCarthy’s limited playing time this season. However, the matchup, recent form, and opportunity all point to a potential breakout game. If he can limit turnovers and find the end zone, McCarthy has a real chance to finish as a top-10 fantasy quarterback in Week 9.
Chuba Hubbard rushes for 100 yards vs. Denver
Chuba Hubbard has already shown what he can do when Carolina gives him a consistent workload. Through eight weeks, Hubbard has rushed for 563 yards and four touchdowns, averaging 4.5 yards per carry.
His season has included two impressive rushing performances. Hubbard rushed for 122 yards against Detroit in Week 4 and followed that up with 120 yards against Philadelphia in Week 6.
He’s also been involved as a receiver, catching 23 passes for 152 yards. That dual-threat ability makes him a valuable fantasy asset, especially in PPR formats.
The Case for Hubbard
The volume is what makes me confident in this prediction. Hubbard has received at least 19 carries in each of his last four games, and that kind of workload is rare in today’s NFL.
His Week 8 performance was also encouraging from a usage standpoint. Hubbard finished with 119 total yards from scrimmage and found the end zone, showing he can be productive even in tough matchups.
If Carolina continues giving him opportunities near the goal line and between the tackles, Hubbard has a real shot at reaching 100 rushing yards in Week 9.
How the Defensive Matchup Could Help
Denver has struggled to stop the run this season, allowing 127.9 rushing yards per game through Week 8. That ranks 22nd in the NFL, and the Broncos have allowed multiple 100-yard rushers already this season.
The Broncos have allowed opposing offenses to find room on the ground, and Hubbard has already demonstrated he can take advantage of favorable matchups. This is a spot where he could have another big game.
Carolina will need to stay committed to the ground game, but the matchup gives Hubbard a legitimate chance to hit the century mark.
The Takeaway
Hubbard has the workload, production, and matchup to make this happen. Denver has struggled against the run, and Hubbard has already proven he can handle a heavy workload. If the game script cooperates, he should have plenty of opportunities to reach 100 yards.
Chris Olave scores a TD and finishes with 20+ fantasy points vs. Cleveland
Chris Olave has been heavily involved in the Saints’ passing attack this season, and his target volume reflects that. Olave has 49 receptions for 632 yards through seven games.
He’s averaging seven receptions and just over 90 receiving yards per game. Olave has already recorded four 100-yard games, showing he can be a high-volume fantasy producer when the matchup is right.
His recent production has been quieter, with 56 receiving yards against Pittsburgh in Week 7, but that dip could set up a bounce-back performance in Week 9.
The Case for Olave
Olave’s consistent involvement is the biggest reason I’m expecting a bounce-back performance. His 71 targets rank among the top 10 at the position, and his 69.0% catch rate shows he’s making the most of those opportunities.
He’s already demonstrated that he can produce big numbers when the opportunities are there. His 182-yard performance against the Giants in Week 4 was a reminder of his ceiling.
The touchdown production has been relatively limited, with two scores so far, but he has the target volume and talent to find the end zone in Week 9.
How the Defensive Matchup Could Help
Cleveland presents a challenging matchup, but there are still opportunities for Olave to make plays. The Browns are allowing just 191.7 passing yards per game, which ranks seventh in the NFL.
That means the Saints will need to be intentional about getting Olave involved rather than relying on the passing game to come naturally. If they can get him the ball in space, he has the ability to make plays after the catch.
The Browns defense makes this a difficult prediction, but Olave’s target share gives him a chance to overcome a tough matchup.
The Takeaway
Olave has the volume and talent to put together another 20-point fantasy performance. Cleveland is a tough matchup, but Olave’s target volume and ability to make plays after the catch give him a real chance to deliver for fantasy managers in Week 9.
