Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Friday, May 23, 2025. In this edition, the Mariners were given no time to rejoice in their ace’s return, as they now have two other injuries to deal with. Also, Ronald Acuna makes his triumphant debut tonight, and Yordan Alvarez takes batting practice. All of this and so much more in today’s MLB Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report
Seattle Mariners – Team Update

On a night when the Mariners had hoped to celebrate the return of George Kirby, they instead had to contend with injuries to both Bryan Woo and Julio Rodriguez. Woo, who didn’t pitch last night, was hit by an errant foul ball while sitting in the dugout. It was said that he should be fine, however, it is something to monitor. The bigger issue is that of Julio Rodriguez, whose back tightened up on him during batting practice before the game. The expectation is that he is day-to-day, but how much they believe that is another story altogether. Rodriguez said that he would address the situation today, a day after the incident, as he should have a better idea of what he’s dealing with. Needless to say, he’s likely not in tonight’s lineup.
Seattle Mariners – Team Update
Bruce Miller is expected to throw a sim game tomorrow here in Houston and it sounds like Logan Gilbert will as well.
Miller is slated to go two innings.

Great news on both players, though it’s very peculiar that they’re both in the same position as each other within their recovery schedules, et they were both injured at different times. Gilbert seems like a much safer (long-term) return than Miller does, but that’s just this writer’s personal opinion.
Ronald Acuna – OF Atlanta Braves

Be prepared!
Yordan Alvarez – OF Houston Astros
Yordan Alvarez is “better,” according to Espada, and is now taking batting practice off coaches in the cage.
— Brian McTaggart (@brianmctaggart) May 22, 2025
The good news here is that Alvarez was taking batting practice. It was noted that he wouldn’t be returning until he felt 100 percent healthy, so taking batting practice is a big step in the right direction. How he feels afterward will be key in deciding how long it will take from here until he actually returns to the Astros. He may need a quick rehab assignment, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see him slot right back into the Houston lineup.
Ronel Blanco – SP Houston Astros
Ronel Blanco will be placed on the injured list and go for a second opinion, Joe Espada said. Espada said the first opinion showed “elbow inflammation.”
— Matt Kawahara (@matthewkawahara) May 22, 2025
This has an ominous feel to it. It’s unclear who asked for the second opinion, but it’s never usually a good sign for something positive. We did not receive an initial report of “no structural damage”, so there’s always that possibility. There could be something larger at play here in the future. Stay tuned.
Spencer Arrighetti – SP Houston Astros
Spencer Arrighetti is out of his cast and starting to do some gripping exercises with his right hand, Joe Espada said. Still not throwing. Still has a ways to go.
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) May 22, 2025
The good news for the Astros, who may lose Ronel Blanco long term, is that they should be gaining his replacement in Arrighetti later this season. The bad news is that he likely won’t be back until July, as he has a long way to go with his recovery. That said, because it was a hand injury and not his arm or shoulder, it’s all about gripping the ball and ramping up his pitch count.
Milwaukee Brewers – Team Update
Brandon Woodruff, who threw 59 pitches in 4 IP yesterday for Class AAA Nashville, will likely make another rehab start there according to Pat Murphy.
DL Hall also fared well, striking out 6 in 3 IP/57 pitches, with the duo combining on a shutout of Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
— Todd Rosiak (@Todd_Rosiak) May 22, 2025
Woodruff continues to grind through all of his rehab starts, this one included. He will likely need more than just one more start, and chances are he will be ready to return to the Brewers mid-June. The team will have decisions to make once he returns, and they have an abundance of arms. As for DL Hall, he will be a long relief option for the Brewers, and that is something that likely works best for him, his health, and his skill set.
Chase Dollander – SP Colorado Rockies
The Rockies announced today that they have placed RHP Chase Dollander on the 15-day IL (retroactive to May 19) with right forearm tightness and have recalled RHP Juan Mejia from Triple-A Albuquerque.
— Rockies Club Information (@RockiesClubInfo) May 22, 2025
Dollander, despite his struggles with home runs allowed, had been able to show perseverance and was able to slowly come around from his early-career struggles. Now, this is an ailment that will set him back either for a short while or over an extended period. It remains to be seen how serious a situation this is, but these don’t usually end well for pitchers. Stay tuned.
Justin Martinez – RP Arizona Diamondbacks
Torey Lovullo said there’s a good chance Justin Martinez will join the team in St. Louis.
— Jody Jackson (@Jody_Jackson) May 22, 2025
For those in daily leagues, this is an important news item, as Martinez could be a late-week source for saves. He will need to pass some strength and conditioning tests first, but things are looking good here.
Gleyber Torres – 2B Detroit Tigers
INF Gleyber Torres is under evaluation after exiting tonight’s game with discomfort in his lower right leg.
— Tigers PR (@DetroitTigersPR) May 23, 2025
Torres left Thursday’s game in the fourth inning with lower leg discomfort. Chances are he misses today’s game, as the team did not give any explanation other than the diagnosis. He will likely be evaluated the day after to see if his symptoms have dissipated. Consider him day-to-day until we hear otherwise.
