Week 10 Hitting Planner for Fantasy Baseball

Memorial Day weekend represents a checkpoint of sorts regarding the Major League Baseball season. By the time this week ends, all teams will have played at least a third of their games. While plenty is still to be determined over the next four months, there is also much that we can say with relative certainty when it comes to hitting matchups. For example, facing the Colorado Rockies will generally be a favorable proposition. And while some of this can be attributed to Coors Field, Colorado has an MLB-worst 5.03 FIP and 5.03 xFIP on the road. So even though the Rockies are away from home this week, the Chicago Cubs and New York Mets should be considered strong starts. Let’s see who else is in for a big week with the Week 10 Hitting Planner.

Week 10 Schedule Notes

Monday’s holiday makes for an ideal setting for most of us to kick back with our favorite food and beverage and watch baseball nonstop for up to 12 hours. But it may be a bit inconvenient for fantasy baseball managers when setting lineups. There are 12 games on Monday with 11 different starting times. There might be more guesswork involved than usual if you must set weekly lineups before the start of the first game. Despite 80 percent of the league being active on Monday, Week 10 will feature less volume than most. That is because there are only four games scheduled for Thursday. As a result, only the Tampa Bay Rays and Toronto Blue Jays play seven games.

As of Sunday morning, there are 43 instances where a left-handed starting pitcher is scheduled to start a game in Week 10. If that were to hold, each MLB offense would face an average of 1.4 southpaws this week. The Milwaukee Brewers will likely face four left-handers this week. That means it could be a rougher week than usual for Brice Turang. Pat Murphy may sit Turang for a game and drop him in the order for another.

Meanwhile, teammate Rhys Hoskins should be able to keep up his recent hot hitting. Hoskins has a .932 OPS in May and has historically fared very well (141 career wRC+) versus left-handed pitchers. Of course, not all lefties are created equally. St. Louis faces two left-handers, but they are Cade Povich and Patrick Corbin. I would continue to roll out Lars Nootbaar, Brendan Donovan, and Alec Burleson this week.

Week 10 Travel and Park Factor Notes

Only eight MLB teams will play a split week of home and away games this week. Two of those are the aforementioned Rays and Jays. 11 teams will play six games at home, while 11 more are on the road for six. As mentioned, the Mets are in for a strong week despite playing all six games at Citi Field. Their 95-park factor for left-handed hitters should be offset by facing the likes of Adrian Houser, Kyle Freeland, and Antonio Senzatela. Conversely, Rockies hitters have an MLB-worst 66 wRC+ this year. That number drops to 58 away from Coors Field. It is hard to justify starting any Rockies in Week 10. The most likely exception would be in a daily league on a day when the wind is blowing out during one of their games in Wrigley Field.

The Athletics and Red Sox are also on the road for Week 10. That means there aren’t many favorable park effects for hitters this week. Philadelphia has the highest projected park factor for left-handed hitters with a 103 mark. They only face one left-handed pitcher, which should benefit Bryson Stott, Max Kepler, and Brandon Marsh. Arizona’s 104 overall park factor for right-handed hitters is the highest this week. However, they face Paul Skenes on Wednesday, which may negate some of that edge.
