Are you the type of person who lets the computer pick your kicker and defense? You could be leaving precious points on the table. With that in mind, in this article, I’ll look at some of the top D/ST sleepers for the coming season of fantasy football.
While most league managers are studying up on the best QBs, RBs, WRs, and TEs, they forget to look at D/STs. You don’t need to dive into hours of film, articles, and statistics either. Have a simple and focused strategy for the end of your draft and gain an edge on the rest of your leaguemates.
What!? Your fantasy football league wasn’t hosted on Fantrax last season!? Once you see how Fantrax stacks up to the competition, we think you’ll be singing a different tune next season.
Sleeper D/STs for 2026 Fantasy Football
Here are the best D/ST sleepers, and a few strategies that can guide the final picks in your draft.
Jacksonville Jaguars
Fantrax ADP: D/ST 9 (Other Platforms: D/ST10 – 18)
The Jaguars are not the biggest sleeper in the world, but it seems like people forget their 2025 season. Jacksonville finished 6th in defensive DVOA and 3rd in Fantrax D/ST scoring last year. This year they start the season against the lowly Cleveland Browns. The schedule gets difficult for a while after that, but after Week 9 they draw the Titans twice, Giants, Steelers, and Texans.
Last year, the Jaguars D/ST put up points against the Bengals, Texans, 49ers, Chiefs, Seahawks, and Chargers. They also took care of business against their divisional opponents, averaging 15.17 fantasy points in those 6 games. It’s worth noting that this included the Colts game where Daniel Jones got hurt after just 7 pass attempts, and another Colts game against Philip Rivers.
What’s even more impressive is that the Jaguars didn’t do well in the sack department in 2025. The Jaguars only sacked opposing QBs 32 times, 6th worst in the league. That number may have been higher had they faced Cam Ward earlier in the season. Ward was sacked a league-high 55 times in his rookie year, but only 10 times in his final 6 games. That stretch included both of his games against the Jaguars.
Where the Jaguars got most of their points was turnovers. The Jaguars forced 31 total turnovers in the 2025 season, 2nd in the NFL and just 2 turnovers behind the league-leader Chicago Bears. This happened after forcing a league-low 9 turnovers in 2024. What changed? Liam Coen came in at HC, moved on from Defensive Coordinator Ryan Nielsen, and brought in Anthony Campanile. We will have to see if this was just a fluke or if Campanile has truly transformed this defense.
The Jaguars did not draft a defensive player until the 3rd round of the draft this year, but sophomore WR/CB Travis Hunter is expected to play more defensive snaps than last year. Hunter was the 2nd overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. He only played 7 games before a knee injury ended his rookie season. A healthy Hunter could add even more to an already good defensive unit. The bigger question is what his weekly role ultimately becomes as a unique two-way player.
It will be difficult for most fantasy managers to start the Jaguars D/ST in tough games. Their productivity last year was encouraging but we can’t assume they will be an elite unit just yet. They are still worth taking a shot on. They have a phenomenal Week 1 matchup and a lot of great opponents towards the end of the year. At worst, they’re a long-term stash in deeper leagues. At their best, they can put up points against almost any offense. Being drafted as the D/ST9 in Fantrax leagues and even later on other platforms, I’ll take that risk.
Detroit Lions
Fantrax ADP: D/ST 13 (Other Platforms: D/ST9 – 20)
The NFC North is getting competitive. That doesn’t mean that the D/STs there have no value. You’re not going to start the Lions against the Bears or Packers, but the Vikings still look like a good matchup with Kyler Murray or J.J. McCarthy at the helm. Additionally, Detroit gets to face off against teams like the Saints, Jets, Panthers, Cardinals, Dolphins, and Titans this year. Whether it’s a question mark at QB, a shaky offensive line, a predictable and slow offense, or some combination of those, there’s something to love about starting the Lions D/ST against all of those offenses. Detroit enters 2026 with the 6th easiest strength of schedule.
Although the Lions lost LB Alex Anzalone in free agency, they extended First-Team All-Pro LB Jack Campbell and brought in some depth in the secondary and defensive line. In the draft, Detroit used the 44th overall pick on DE Derrick Moore. This is not an elite unit by any stretch, but they should rebound from what was a disappointing 2025 campaign. If star DE Aidan Hutchinson can return to form, the fantasy upside only increases.
Despite averaging just 7.35 fantasy points per game on Fantrax – 23rd in the league – the Detroit Lions defense ranked 9th in DVOA and 15th in EPA last season. Interestingly, the Lions finished with 49 sacks, tied for the 4th highest in the league. Ultimately, their poor fantasy performance came from their mediocre turnover, points allowed, and yards allowed numbers. The Lions were not especially bad in any of those categories but they were around league average or worse. Scoring will vary by platform, but overall that combination is not a recipe for success.
A team with rebound potential and a plethora of juicy matchups should not be drafted this low. The Lions are worth starting all across the 2026 fantasy season, including into the playoffs.
Cleveland Browns
Fantrax ADP: D/ST 15 (Other Platforms: D/ST10 – 26)
Matchups matter, and the Cleveland Browns boast the easiest strength of schedule for the 2026 NFL season. Cleveland gets to face off against 9 offenses that ranked 16th or better in D/ST matchups on Fantrax. That includes the Jets (3rd best matchup), Titans (5th), Raiders (1st), and Bengals (6th). A team like the Bengals will surely improve with a healthy Joe Burrow, but the rest of the matchups are juicy. That doesn’t even include games against other middling offenses like the Panthers, Saints, Falcons, and Steelers.
There is reason for concern. The Browns traded away Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett, focused on their offense in the draft, and have a new Defensive Coordinator. What’s even more concerning is that the Browns D/ST did not always take advantage of their great matchups last year. For example, the Titans finished 2025 as a top-5 matchup for D/STs but Cleveland only scored 3 fantasy points against them. That could be an outlier, but it’s also part of the risk you take once the elite D/STs are gone. Ultimately, you should still target the worst offenses when drafting or streaming a D/ST.
On the flipside, Cleveland received former Defensive Rookie of the Year and two-time Pro Bowler Jared Verse in the Myles Garrett trade. Verse has already recorded 12 sacks and 5 forced fumbles in his first two seasons, per Pro Football Reference. They also have last year’s Defensive Rookie of the Year in LB Carson Schwesinger. Add in extensions for DBs Denzel Ward and Grant Delpit, and you’ve got a handful of playmakers on defense.
Cleveland still has some holes on this side of the ball, but they have enough quality starters to get the job done against the weaker opponents. Many fantasy managers will be down on the Browns after losing Myles Garrett, which is understandable. What is not understandable is how far they have fallen in drafts. An easy schedule and some young quality players make for a perfect D/ST sleeper.
Kansas City Chiefs
Fantrax ADP: D/ST 14 (Other Platforms: D/ST11 – 14)
Just like the Cleveland Browns, the Kansas City Chiefs traded their star defensive player to the Los Angeles Rams. Unlike the Browns, the Chiefs did not receive a Pro-Bowl player back. Instead, the Chiefs received draft picks. Kansas City ended up with three picks in the top-40 which they used exclusively on defense, including drafting CB Mansoor Delane with the 6th overall pick.
Steve Spagnuolo will continue his role as Defensive Coordinator. Since he took over, the Chiefs D/ST has ranked 9th, 8th, 7th, 18th, 6th, 12th, and 19th in Fantrax scoring. Outside of a couple of bad years, he has been consistently successful. Recent down years and notable losses may turn fantasy managers off of the Kansas City Chiefs. That’s understandable, but the team is clearly trying to address it. This is not a bottom-feeder making big swings to save their season; this is a contender that underperformed and needed to reload.
Like the other sleepers, the Chiefs D/ST gets to face off against some of the league’s worst offenses. Teams like the Dolphins, Raiders, Jets, Falcons, and Cardinals highlight their schedule. On the other hand, the Chiefs become borderline unusable towards the end of the season. Kansas City faces off against the Bills, Rams, Bengals, Patriots, 49ers, and Chargers to end the fantasy season. The silver lining is that we will have plenty of time to see if the Chiefs can shock the world and play like an elite defense. While we wait for that, there’s no reason to leave them on the waiver wire to start the year.
Banking on a young and raw defense is not a recipe for success, but the Chiefs are being drafted outside of the top-12. A respected, veteran Defensive Coordinator gives me more confidence. A great schedule until Week 12 also helps. Unless someone reaches on them, you should be guaranteed a chance to draft this D/ST towards the end of your draft.

Draft and In-Season Strategies for D/ST
Strategy 1
The simplest way to gain an edge at the D/ST position is to start one defense and have another on the bench. When you pair two defenses together with complementary schedules, there should almost never be a week where you have to scour the waiver wire for a replacement. Injuries happen and teams that were bad last year can turn things around, but overall this strategy allows you to set it and forget it. Here are a few examples of what that strategy could look like based on actual 2026 schedules. All of these D/STs are being drafted outside of the top-10 in current Fantrax ADP.
Note: The Cleveland Browns D/ST works well with most of these D/STs. The Browns only have a few bad matchups this year.
Detroit Lions and Tampa Bay Buccaneers D/STs
Best route: Saints, Browns, Jets or Vikings, Panthers, Cardinals, Steelers, Panthers, Vikings or Falcons, Dolphins, Patriots, Buccaneers, Panthers, Falcons, Titans, Vikings or Saints, Giants or Falcons, Bears or Rams
Los Angeles Chargers and Indianapolis Colts D/STs
Best route: Cardinals, Raiders, Texans, Commanders, Steelers or Broncos, Titans, Vikings, Jaguars, Texans, Dolphins, Jets, Giants, Buccaneers, Raiders, Titans, Dolphins, Browns
New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears D/STs
Best route: Panthers, Vikings, Raiders, Falcons or Jets, Vikings, Giants or Falcons, Steelers, Seahawks, Browns, Panthers, Saints, Bengals or Lions, Jaguars, Panthers or Dolphins, Buccaneers, Cardinals, Falcons
Strategy 2
While the first strategy is the least stressful one, it is not always the easiest to pull off. If someone grabs your complementary D/ST, you’re out of luck and need to come up with a new plan on the fly. Strategy 2 gives you more flexibility. Break up the fantasy season into 2-3 game periods. Have a list of defenses with multiple great matchups in a row and target them in your draft and on the waiver wire depending on how early or late those matchups happen.
For example, the Indianapolis Colts start the season against the Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs. It’s unlikely that your leaguemates will be reaching to grab them. If they draft the Colts D/ST solely based on projections, they might drop them as the season starts. Starting in Week 3, the Colts play the Texans, Commanders, Steelers, Titans, and Vikings. Bad teams will usually improve, but last year nearly all of those teams ranked in the top half of fantasy matchups for D/STs. Here are a few more teams with great stretches following a tough game.
Detroit Lions after Week 2 (at Buffalo Bills):
vs New York Jets, at Carolina Panthers, at Arizona Cardinals
Minnesota Vikings after Week 3 (at Tampa Bay Buccaneers):
vs Miami Dolphins, at New Orleans Saints
Cleveland Browns after Week 6 (vs Baltimore Ravens):
at Tennessee Titans, at Pittsburgh Steelers, at New Orleans Saints, vs Houston Texans
Jacksonville Jaguars after Week 9 (at Baltimore Ravens):
at Tennessee Titans, at New York Giants, vs Tennessee Titans
or after Week 12 (vs Chicago Bears):
at Atlanta Falcons, vs Tennessee Titans, at Minnesota Vikings
Arizona Cardinals after Week 13 (vs Philadelphia Eagles) or after Week 14 (BYE):
vs New York Jets, at New Orleans Saints, vs Las Vegas Raiders
