2026 Fantasy Football: Keeper League Strategy

Let’s keep the good times rolling. Keeper leagues combine the best of both worlds, redraft and dynasty, to allow you to continue the fantasy football fun year after year. While the rules are different across all keeper leagues, the general idea and roster construction remain the same. Each year, you have the ability to keep some, but not all, of your players from the previous year. There are a lot of benefits to this, with increased league engagement at the top of the list. Ultimately though, it is all about winning. So with the 2026 fantasy football season upon us, let’s take a look at some keeper league strategy.

What!? Your fantasy football league wasn’t hosted on Fantrax last season!? Once you see how Fantrax stacks up to the competition, we think you’ll be singing a different tune this season.

2026 Fantasy Football Keeper League Strategy

Flags Fly Forever

Before we get into some pieces of strategy to consider and keep in mind, we should remember why we are here. We can list all of the reasons, but the number one is to win. That is what it is all about, and we should never lose sight of it.

While we have to look towards the future, it is important to remember that we live in the present. You never know what is going to happen from week to week, let alone year to year, so that must be at the top of your mind. Everything you do should be done to maximize your chances of winning in the current year.

2026 Began in 2025

Whether you are keeping one player or five, the thought process here is the same. Yes, the NFL marks the calendar by playing different 17-game seasons, and that is how we are evaluated from a fantasy perspective, but do not look at it that way. Instead, think of it as one ongoing ride from which you never step off.

The motivation is always going to be to do what you can to win in each season. At the same time, you are building something that should be meant to sustain multiple seasons. Whenever possible, whether it is through waiver moves or trades, your transactions should be done with one eye towards the future. When making roster decisions, obviously you want to prioritize the present, but think about how they will impact the following seasons.

Know the Keeper Rules

As you consider trades and manage your team, it is important to know how everything will impact your team. Here are some factors to be aware of:

  • How many players do you keep on a yearly basis?
  • Is there a limit as to how many years a player can be kept?
  • Do you have to keep a minimum number of players?
  • Does a player have to be drafted in order to be keeper-eligible?
  • Are any draft choices lost based on the player kept? If so, how is that determined?
  • Is every player keeper eligible?

Keep Players Based on their Expected Value

If there is no cost associated with your keeper, then the choice becomes a lot easier. In that case, just take the best player. Or said another way, keep the player with the highest ADP for the coming season. There should be some strategy here, though, in the sense that it is more valuable to keep a top running back or receiver than a quarterback. Ultimately though, this is not something you should force. Play it straight as if you are in a draft.

Things get a little more complicated, though, if a draft pick must be forfeited to secure your keeper. While you always want to keep the best player, you never want to keep a player with a round value at or higher than their ADP. In fact, there is a balancing act between having the largest spread between ADP and keeper cost or having the best player. If multiple players are kept, it is also important to understand positional scarcity and how that applies.

Be Realistic

While making these moves and building your team for the future, it is important to be realistic about when that future will arrive. Are you currently living in the present and trying to win the championship this season, or is the plan to look into the future? One of the worst things you can do as a dynasty football manager is to not evaluate this question honestly. Getting it wrong could either cost a championship or delay your roster build. Neither is what we want.
