Fantasy Football Week 9 Start and Sits: QBs and RBs

As we move into Week 9 of the football season, we also move into another week of my starts and sits for quarterbacks and RBs. Week 9 also means no Tony Pollard, Aaron Rodgers, or Jaylen Warren. But lucky for you, I’m here to tell you who you should be starting in your lineup and who you should be sitting.

Week 9 Starts and Sits

Quarterback Starts

Jared Goff, Detroit Lions (at Miami Dolphins)

Jared Goff has not been a high scorer over the last couple of weeks, but he did play against some top defenses in the Vikings and Packers. Both are top-five defenses against quarterbacks. However, this week he gets the Dolphins, who are giving up 20.6 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks. The last time Goff played against a weaker defense was the Cardinals, and he put up 28.9 fantasy points.

Patrick Mahomes II, Kansas City Chiefs (vs. New York Jets)

Patrick Mahomes II is a must-start every week. This week, he has a great matchup at home against the New York Jets. The Jets just gave up three touchdowns and 28.2 fantasy points to Kirk Cousins last week. Mahomes put up 25.4 fantasy points against the Broncos last week, who are a top defense against quarterbacks.

Quarterback Sits

Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Rams (at Washington Commanders)

Matthew Stafford has been on a downturn since Davante Adams went down. He still has Puka Nacua, but Stafford has not performed. He hasn’t scored more than 20 fantasy points since Week 5, and the Rams are more focused on controlling the game.

Caleb Williams, Chicago Bears (vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers)

This is an overall bad matchup for Caleb Williams. The Buccaneers’ defense is legit. They are giving up just 13.1 fantasy points per game to quarterbacks this season. That is top-tier. Williams also hasn’t gotten his groove back, scoring more than 20 fantasy points just once in his three games back.

RB Starts

Chase Brown, Cincinnati Bengals (at Atlanta Falcons)

Chase Brown has a juicy matchup this week against the Falcons, who are giving up 24.4 fantasy points per game to RBs. That is the fourth-most in the league. Brown has not performed all season, but the Bengals look to be back on track. This will be a breakout game for Brown, as it has the potential to be another high-scoring game for the Bengals.

Bucky Irving, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (at Chicago Bears)

Bucky Irving is back to being elite. He is a must-start every week. He does have a tough matchup this week against the Bears, but Irving counters that with his workhorse role. He has three touchdowns in his last two games. He also has 51 carries over that span. Those are workhorse numbers.

RB Sits

Rhamondre Stevenson, New England Patriots (vs. Green Bay Packers)

Rhamondre Stevenson has been way too inconsistent to start at this point. He did get 19 carries last week but only turned that into 82 yards and 10.5 fantasy points. The Patriots are focused on the passing game and running through Drake Maye.

Ashton Jeanty, Las Vegas Raiders (at San Francisco 49ers)

This one is hard because Ashton Jeanty is still putting up decent numbers, but he only had two carries last week compared with Mike Washington Jr.’s 25 carries. This is a huge concern, as Jeanty might only be featured in the passing game. However, this is also a tough week against the 49ers, who are giving up 19.2 fantasy points per game to RBs.
