After a one-year relocation to Torrey Pines South due to the Los Angeles wildfires, the Genesis Invitational returns home to Riviera Country Club in 2026. As the second Signature Event of the season, the Genesis again features an elite field including nine of the Top 10 and 40 of the Top 50 players in the DataGolf world rankings.

The Course: Riviera Country Club
The Par 71 setups at Riviera have been stretched out to 7,383 yards on this week’s initial scorecard. With tight fairways, large, well-positioned bunkers, unpredictable Kikuyu rough, sneaky undulations, and fast Poa greens, Riviera plays as one of the toughest tests on the PGA Tour. It routinely plays around a stroke harder than average when looking at the regular rotation courses on tour.
It comes in as the second hardest in terms of driving accuracy, which can lead to a small advantage to the most accurate players. That advantage can soon be lost on approach, however, as players will then have to long iron approaches to highly bunkered greens, which are some of the toughest to hit on tour.
Overall, it is a demanding course from tee to green that will require a complete game to contend. Off the tee, I slightly favor distance over accuracy, but will look at overall Strokes Gained: Off the Tee. Strokes Gained: Approach is my top stat in the model again this week as the players who are on with their irons can gain a huge advantage on the field and will likely be contending come Sunday. With the course not being too long and the average driving distance in this field around 306 yards, there won’t be a ton of long iron shots, and instead I will be looking at the 150-175 and 175-200 yard ranges this week. With very tough greens to hit, a solid scrambling game will also be needed this week. When looking at putting, I will look at overall Strokes Gained: Putting but also performance on Poa greens.
Stats & Trends That Matter: Finding the 2026 Genesis Invitational Champion
Strokes Gained: Approach
With an average GIR rate just over 50%(toughest on tour), a strong iron game is at the top of my model this week in terms of weight. Looking at the results from 2024, when the Genesis was last held at Riviera, the 15 players who finished Top 10 averaged a 63% GIR rate with only two of them hitting fewer than 60%.
Rory McIlroy (+1400 Outright)
After picking up a win and four Top 5’s on the DP World Tour over the last couple of months, Rory made his debut at Pebble Beach last week. He finished with an underwhelming T14 but was 4th in SG: Approach(+1.7) for the week, which resulted in 27 birdies or better, which tied him with the winner, Collin Morikawa. The course history has been up and down for Rory, but he did record back-to-back Top 5s here in 2019 and 2020. I look for last week’s momentum to carry over with Rory contending for win #1 in 2026.
Collin Morikawa (+3200 Outright / +225 Top 10)
It was a breakthrough week for Morikawa at Pebble Beach as he picked up his first win on Tour since the Zozo Championship back in 2023. He did with an elite iron game, leading the field, gaining 2.42 strokes on approach. That is nothing new for one of the best in the business as he finished the 2025 season ranked 3rd in SG: Approach. He has some of the best course history in the field, finishing 19th, 6th, and 2nd in the last three trips to Riviera. He has shown he only needs to putt field average to contend, and I think the momentum carries over from last wee,k making him a top target in the betting and DFS markets.
Strokes Gained: Short Game
The greens at Riviera are the hardest to hit in regulation on tour, which leads to a ton of scrambling. Even the best iron players will need to get up and down at least 30-35% of the time. From a putting perspective, we will look at both Strokes Gained: Putting overall and performance on Poa greens.
Tommy Fleetwood (+2200 Outright / +175 Top 10)
Just like Rory, Fleetwood spent time playing on the DP World Tour, picked up a win, and made his PGA Tour debut last week. He looked very good, posting his fourth straight Top 5 on tour, gaining strokes in every category. Looking at the last 24 rounds, going back to last season, Fleetwood ranks 12th in SG: Around the Green, 2nd in SG: Putting, and 11th in putting on Poa greens. Add in some plus course history(T10/T20 last two trips), and Fleetwood is one of my favorite bets, and DFS plays this week.
Jake Knapp (+3900 Outright / +290 Top 10)
After taking a step back in his sophomore 2025 season, where he tallied just four Top 10’s, Knapp is off to a hot start in 2026. He has already tallied three Top 10s in four events, with the other finish a T11. He bombs it off the tee and is 9th in this field in SG: Off the Tee, but the money has been made with the putter as he is 2nd in the field in SG: Putting this season. While he isn’t an elite scrambler, he has looked very good gaining strokes around the green in three of four events on the season. In this signature event with an elite field, I am not as high on the outright but love the Top 10 bet this week.
Course History/Signature Event History
I have added a new element to my models, looking at performance at the signature events. I will look for players who hit on both course history at Riviera and those who have had signature event success.
Sepp Straka (+4900 Outright / +310 Top 10 / +128 Top 20)
First up is Straka, who is second to only Scottie Scheffler in Top 10s at the signature events with eight. Even better, he has Top 3 finishes in three of his last four signature events, including a win at the Truist Championship last year. The course history has not been spectacular, but he did pop with a T15 here in 2022. I like his outlook this week, coming off a T2 at Pebble Beach last week, and he ranks 26th in SG: Tee to Green in this field. If he can duplicate his putting performance, I see him adding to his signature event resume and possibly contending come Sunday.
Tom Hoge (+900 Top 10 / +365 Top 20)
Hoge checks a lot of boxes this week, starting with his course history as he has back-to-back Top 15 finishes here at Riviera in his last two trips. While the signature event history just pops off the page, Hoge does have five Top 10 finishes, which is better than any other golfer outside of 55/1 odds on the board. I like the secondary market for Hoge this week, especially the Top 20.
