Attacking the Green!: 2026 PLAYERS Championship Stats Breakdown and Best Bets

Is it a major championship? No. Is it a Top 5 tournament on the PGA Tour schedule and at times, more exciting than a few of the majors? Yes. That’s right folks, it’s that time of year again when, for at least a week, we debate if the PLAYERS Championship is the “5th Major”.

No matter what side you are on, we all can agree on one thing. With an elite field of players, we are set for some excellent golf entertainment this week. That elite field is what gives the PLAYERS its shine, and this year is no different as nine of the Top 10 and 45 of the Top 50 in the DataGolf World Ranks will assemble at TPC Sawgrass this week.

Let’s jump in and look at the course and some key stats and trends that can lead us to the winner!

The Course: TPC Sawgrass

The Pete Dye designed TPC Sawgrass is a Par 72 listed at 7,352 yards on the scorecard. It annually plays as one of the toughest tests on the PGA Tour averaging nearly a stroke over par. The difficulty comes from multiple factors like narrow fairways, a total of 94 bunkers(2nd most behind Pebble Beach), tons of water hazards which are in play on 17 of 18 holes, and very small green complexes(5,500 sq ft average).

With the danger off the tee, we will likely see a ton of “less than driver,” which does negate driving distance to a point. While driving distance or driving accuracy aren’t key stats by themselves, I will be looking closely at players who fit the Total Driving model. Players who can not only be accurate but also provide some added distance can give themselves an advantage with the difficult approach shots to the well-guarded, smaller-than-average greens.

Stats & Trends That Matter: Finding the 2026 PLAYERS Championship Champion

Strokes Gained: Off the Tee/Total Driving

As I mentioned above, we are going to see a higher than average amount of “less than driver” off the tee this week. With that said, players who can gain added distance without giving up accuracy can have an advantage over the field. Let’s look at some of the best in this area.

Collin Morikawa (+2100 Outright / +225 Top 10)

When talking about Morikawa this season, the focus has been primarily on the iron play, but don’t forget about the elite off-the-tee game. He has always been extremely accurate off the tee, but in 2026, is also driving the ball at a career-high 306.5 yards per drive. He is 6th in Total Driving in this field, to go along with the second-best SG: Ball Striking. That alone is a recipe for winning, but more good news as Collin is also putting the ball well and has gained strokes on the green in back-to-back events. He is coming off three straight Top 10s, including a win a Pebble Beach, and has finished 13th or better in two of his last three trips to TPC Sawgrass. With Scottie’s shaky iron play and low outright number combined with Rory’s back troubles, Morikawa is my favorite outright this week.

Min Woo Lee (+4200 Outright / +410 Top 10 / +185 Top 20)

Lee checks a ton of boxes this week, and it starts with his elite off-the-tee play this season. Distance has never been an issue, but after posting 57% and 55% accuracy in 2024 and 2025, he has seemingly found the recipe for fairways, hitting nearly 65% on the season(27th on tour). In this field, he not only ranks 1st in Total Driving, but he is also 8th in SG: Around the Green, 10th and 4th in par 4 and 5 scoring, 7th in Birdie or Better % and 10th in Bogey Avoidance. Put it all together and he appears primed to continue his success here as he has made the cut in all three trips including two Top 20’s and a Top 10.

Strokes Gained Approach

Iron play is always highly correlated to winning, and it is only amplified here at TPC Sawgrass, where the GIR rate is nearly 5% lower than tour average. If your iron game is not on this week, you are going to spend a lot of time scrambling and won’t be found on the leaderboard come Sunday.

Adam Scott (+5900 Outright / +520 Top 10 / +225 Top 20)

It has been a very good start to the 2026 season for the veteran. He has not only made the cut in all five events but comes in off an 11th-place finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and a 4th-place finish at the Genesis Invitational. His strong start has been a product of some elite ball striking as he ranks Top-15 in this field in both SG: Off the Tee and SG: Approach. Looking closer at his iron play, Scott has gained strokes on approach in eight straight events and now comes in with a hot putter, gaining 1.93 strokes on the green over the last two events. The Top 10 and Top 20 markets are my top bets for Scott this week, but will also sprinkle some outright units on him, as well.

Kurt Kitayama (+5700 Outright / +500 Top 10 / +215 Top 20)

Another player coming in hot is Kurt Kitayama, who finished 2nd at the Genesis Invitational and 18th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Like Scott, the ball striking and especially the iron game have been the core factor to the recent success. Kitayama has gained strokes on approach in seven straight events and is 9th in this field in SG: Approach during that stretch. He now returns to the PLAYERS, where he has placed 33rd and 19th the last two years. An outright win is a long shot, but I do like the value with the Top 10 and Top 20.

Pete Dye Performance

There are currently four events each season that take place on Pete Dye courses, and all demand precision, both off the tee and on approach. Let’s look at some players who have excelled on these courses.

Corey Conners (+740 Top 10 / +310 Top 20)

Loving the value in the secondary market with Conners, who pops when looking at success on Pete Dye courses. He may only have one Top 10 since the start of 2024, but it came here at TPC Sawgrass, and he is also 16th in average finish during that time. Furthermore, he is 5th in this field in SG: Total over the last 50 rounds on Pete Dye courses. Looking specifically at TPC Sawgrass, he has finished 26th or better in four of his last five trips.

Russell Henley (+2700 Outright / +270 Top 10)

Henley has been incredible on Pete Dye courses in the short term with three straight Top 10’s at the American Express(8th) earlier this year, along with the Travelers Championship(2nd) and RBC Heritage(8th) in 2025. Going back even further, he ranks 9th in this field in SG: Total on Pete Dye courses over the last 50 rounds. After missing the cut at the Genesis, he bounced back, finishing 6th last week while displaying an elite short game. Fire up Henley on the betcard this week.
