Fantasy EPL Gameweek 38 Sleepers XI

For this article, we use the ownership statistics from Fantrax.  Our only rule is that each player we highlight is required to have ownership of 20% or below at the time of writing.  Therefore there’s a good chance these players will be free agents in your Fantrax Draft League!

GK: Alex McCarthy

Team:  Southampton

Opponent:  Sheffield United (Home)

Ownership:  16%

Points Last Gameweek:  15.5

Prospects:  There isn’t really much choice for goalkeepers under our 20% ownership threshold for this article, so we’re opting for Southampton shot-stopper Alex McCarthy.  The Saints are on really good form, and face a Sheffield United side who have failed to score in both of their last two games.  If you’re after a low ownership streaming goalkeeper for the final day of the season, McCarthy is your man.

DEF: Kevin Long

Team:  Burnley

Opponent:  Brighton & Hove Albion (Home)

Ownership:  11%

Points Last Gameweek:  16.75

Prospects:  We’re kicking off our Gameweek 38 Sleepers XI defence with a must own player in any Fantrax league: Kevin Long.  The Burnley centre back is currently deputizing for the injured Ben Mee, and has done a fantastic job.  The little-known Irishman is actually 29 years old and has been at Burnley since 2010.  Long gained 16.75 points in the Gameweek 37 victory over Norwich as Burnley tallied their 15th clean sheet of the season, which really showed off his potential.  Sean Dyche is doing a really fantastic job at Burnley, with limited funds and lots of injuries to contend with.  The Clarets are currently missing three of their first choice backline, but because the team and the system they play is so well drilled, it doesn’t really matter about the personnel.  This weekend Burnley face a Brighton side who have only scored three goals in their last seven games.  Long is therefore an amazing defender to pick up for the final round of fixtures!

DEF: Jannik Vestergaard

Team:  Southampton

Opponent:  Sheffield United (Home)

Ownership:  17%

Points Last Gameweek:  23.25

Prospects:  In Gameweek 37 Jannik Vestergaard registered 17 successful clearances and 14 aerials won en-route to a huge 23.25 point haul.  The giant Danish center back started the game due to an injury to Bednarek, and more than proved his worth during the 2-0 victory over struggling Bournemouth.  Those two statistics mentioned gained Vestergaard 18.25 points on their own… and his score would have been even more impressive if he didn’t receive a booking!  After such an impressive performance last time around, we’re backing Hassenhutl to stick with the big Dane for the home game against Sheffield United, even if Bednarek is fit enough to return.  The Blades have their own giant playing upfront in the form of Oliver McBurnie, so surely Vestergaard will get the nod once again, and rack up the points from winning aerials.

DEF: Jarrad Branthwaite

Team:  Everton

Opponent:  Bournemouth (Home)

Ownership:  1%

Points Last Gameweek:  12.25

Prospects:  Had you heard of Jarrad Branthwaite before he came on as a half time substitute against Wolves in Gameweek 35 and gave away a goal within minutes of his arrival?  Yeah, neither had we.  The 18-year-old center-back signed for The Toffees from Carlisle in January of this year, after making just nine appearances for the League Two side.  With injuries keeping out Holgate and Mina, Branthwaite has now started the last two games for Everton, and gained a highly respectable 12.25 points during the Gameweek 37 victory over Sheffield United.  It remains to be seen if Holgate will be fit enough for the final day of the season, but we would recommend taking a punt on youngster Branthwaite as Everton face a Bournemouth side who are destined to be relegated on Sunday.

DEF: Frederic Guilbert

Team:  Aston Villa

Opponent:  West Ham United (Away)

Ownership:  17%

Points Last Gameweek:  13.5

Prospects:  Next up is a player who scores really well in Fantrax, but has been struggling with his fitness since the Premier League restart.  Frederic Guilbert was introduced as a first-half substitute for the injured El Mohamady during the Gameweek 37 victory over Arsenal and duly gained an impressive 13.5 points during his 65 minutes of action.  Guilbert is actually Aston Villa’s eighth-highest scoring player this season, and the French right-back looks set to start this weekend.  Therefore, he’s a good punt for our Gameweek 38 Sleepers XI!  Aston Villa face a trip to West Ham, but considering The Hammers have nothing to play for and Aston Villa have literally everything to play for, we’re backing Guilbert and the away side!

GW38 Points Scored:  12.75

DEF: Japhet Tanganga

Team:  Tottenham Hotspur

Opponent:  Crystal Palace (Away)

Ownership:  9%

Points Last Gameweek:  0

Prospects:  We’re going with a five-man defense for our Gameweek 38 Sleepers XI, as we couldn’t help but take a punt on Tottenham youngster Japhet Tanganga.  The 21-year-old defender has played really well under Mourinho this season when he’s been called upon, but he hasn’t featured since the restart due to injury.  Tanganga did make a return to the bench for the Gameweek 37 victory over Leicester, and we’re hoping he gets promoted to the starting eleven this weekend.  Mourinho needs to give Tanganga more game time if he wants him to develop, and he usually scores well on Fantrax when called upon.  If you’re Gameweek 38 opponent owns Lloris, Aurier or Davies, then taking a punt on Tanganga may pay off.  Tottenham faces a blunt Crystal Palace attack this weekend, so a clean sheet is surely on the cards.

MID: Anthony Gordon

Team:  Everton

Opponent:  Bournemouth (Home)

Ownership:  5%

Points Last Gameweek:  3

Prospects:  Anthony Gordon has been in and out of the Everton side since the Premier League restart, but we’re backing him to start the final game of the season.  The young winger is part of the club’s future, and therefore he surely has to start a meaningless game against the side 19th in the table.  Gordon has been largely disappointing during the last four games, but prior to that, he gained scores of 8.5 and 15.5 points.  If you’re playing in a large Fantrax league with little options from the waiver wire, then Gordon is a decent punt.  He, therefore, makes our Gameweek 38 Sleepers XI, and we’re quietly confident of a good points scoring haul for Gordon.

GW38 Points Scored:  1

MID: Alexis Mac Allister

Team:  Brighton & Hove Albion

Opponent:  Burnley (Away)

Ownership:  1%

Points Last Gameweek:  0

Prospects:  Another player who could benefit from his side featuring in a meaningless game is Brighton’s, Alexis Mac Allister.  The Seagulls face a trip to Burnley, and we think the Argentinean playmaker should be given the full 90 minutes here to really prove he has what it takes to perform in the Premier League.  Mac Allister has actually performed fairly poorly for Fantrax points during his eight post-suspension appearances, but he’s worth a punt for managers in deeper leagues.  Burnley is incredibly hard to breakdown, so from a tactical perspective it makes sense to have a player such as Mac Allister in the side to try and unpick their defense.  This is a risky pick, but it’s one that could pay off!

GW38 Points Scored:  3.5

MID: Yves Bissouma

Team:  Brighton & Hove Albion

Opponent:  Burnley (Away)

Ownership:  6%

Points Last Gameweek:  3.5

Prospects:  We’re backing another Brighton midfielder for our Gameweek 38 Sleepers XI, this time in the form of steady scoring combative central midfielder Yves Bissouma.  The 23-year-old Ivory Coast man has been in really good form since the Premier League restart, after finally establishing himself in Potter’s starting eleven.  If your Fantrax squad consists of lots of players with explosive potential, then someone like Bissouma is the ideal candidate to slot into midfield alongside them!  We’re shocked to see his ownership as low as 6% despite his decent form in recent weeks.

GW38 Points Scored:  12.5

FWD: Che Adams

Team:  Southampton

Opponent:  Sheffield United (Home)

Ownership:  12%

Points Last Gameweek:  17.5

Prospects:  One player that has really benefited from the Premier League suspension is Che Adams.  The Southampton striker was having a terrible season for The Saints, as he failed to find the back of the net for his new club, and was resigned to a place on the bench.  However, since his goal that inspired the victory against Manchester City in Gameweek 33, Adams has seen an increased amount of minutes, and actually bagged his second Premier League goal last time around.  As Southampton prepare for next season, we’re almost certain that Adams will be afforded a start in Gameweek 38, and is, therefore, a solid addition to our Sleepers XI.  Southampton has a home game against Sheffield United.

GW38 Points Scored:  24

FWD: Theo Walcott

Team:  Everton

Opponent:  Bournemouth (Home)

Ownership:  13%

Points Last Gameweek:  6

Prospects:  These days Theo Walcott is struggling for game time at Everton as he enters the later stages of his career.  The former wunderkind started for The Toffees in their last game, after scoring from the bench during the 1-1 draw with Aston Villa in Gameweek 36.  Everton faces struggling Bournemouth on the final day of the season, and we’re backing Ancelotti to give Walcott another chance to prove he has a future at the club!  Imagine if Theo Walcott was the player to score the goal that secured your Draft Premier League championship.  Dreamy.
