Fantasy Basketball Points League Strategy and Draft Guide: How to Outsmart Your League Mates

Whether you’ve been playing points leagues for years or this is your very first time stepping into the format, channeling Coach Don Haskins in Glory Road: “Our game is strategy, discipline, and execution.” Consider this article your definitive guide to dominating your draft and winning your league this season.

There are massive fundamental differences between points formats and traditional 9-Category leagues. Therefore, you need to be aware of these nuances and actively strategize around them on draft night. While points leagues simplify team management by removing the headache of balancing nine separate statistical categories, they introduce unique strategies. As a result, savvy managers can gain a distinct upper hand over their league mates. In this guide, we will break down the fundamental draft principles you must follow. Additionally, we will highlight players to target or avoid based on format value and lay out a winning roster construction framework.

Fantasy Basketball Points League Strategy and Draft Guide

1. The “Best Player Available” Strategy & The Guard Advantage

In 9-Category leagues, draft strategy requires constant category management. Beyond the first round, your picks are heavily dictated by synergy and build strategy. For example, if you draft Giannis Antetokounmpo, you immediately punt free-throw percentage to stack complementary categories.

However, in points leagues, throw that entire concept out the window.

In Round 1, you take the best player available. In Round 2, you take the best player available. In Round 3? You guessed it—best player available! Your sole objective is raw fantasy point accumulation. Consequently, we are hunting players with sky-high usage rates who dominate ball handling and serve as the absolute focal point of their offense.

Furthermore, this dynamic gives high-usage guards an immediate competitive edge over big men early in drafts. Guards control the flow of the game, creating baseline fantasy output through raw scoring and assist volume. Thus, they provide both a safer floor and a higher ceiling.

2. Points League Darlings: Players to Target

Certain players carry a modest draft price in 9-Cat drafts due to efficiency issues or high turnovers. In points formats, however, these same guys transform into absolute monsters. Here are eight players whose value shoots up in points leagues:

  • Paolo Banchero

  • Jalen Brunson

  • Jaylen Brown

  • Julius Randle

  • Darius Garland

  • Dejounte Murray

  • Ja Morant

  • Jalen Green

While these players hold value across all formats at the right price, their high usage and ball dominance make them major targets for me in points drafts.

On the other hand, I am treading carefully with Jaylen Brown and Ja Morant at their current ADPs. In Philadelphia alongside LeBron James and Joel Embiid, Brown faces a crowded offensive hierarchy that caps his steady floor. Granted, he will certainly have spike games when veterans rest. Meanwhile, Morant enters a brand new environment in Portland as a complete wildcard. He could run with a chip on his shoulder and crush his ADP. Conversely, he might struggle with the inconsistency and injury bugs that have plagued him in past seasons. Ultimately, I will draft Morant, but only if he slides past his current price tag.

3. Category Traps: Players to Avoid at ADP

Flipping the coin, you will find elite 9-Category assets who simply do not translate into top-tier points league picks. These players impact the game in ways that win category matchups, such as elite defensive stats, low turnovers, and high-percentage efficiency. Yet, they lack the raw ball usage needed to produce massive fantasy point totals:

  • Kawhi Leonard

  • Trey Murphy III

  • Derrick White

  • Dyson Daniels

  • Kon Knueppel

  • OG Anunoby

  • Brandon Ingram

  • Mikal Bridges

While these players are fantastic real-life contributors and 9-Cat anchors, their lack of primary usage caps their fantasy ceiling. Because of this, I am letting my league mates overpay for them while I draft players who command a much higher piece of their team’s offensive pie.

4. Early-Round Reliability & Roster Mechanics

Building a strong foundation in rounds 1 through 4 is vital. For this reason, I am avoiding high-risk injury names like Anthony Davis, Kawhi Leonard, Kevin Durant, James Harden, and LaMelo Ball at their current cost. In points formats, quantity directly drives success, meaning the single best ability is availability. You want a balance of durability, prime age, and competitive team contexts so you do not spend late March worrying about random rest days or shutdown risk.

For your final 2–3 draft picks, pivot entirely to high-upside dart throws and flyers. If they hit, great! If they don’t, you can easily drop them to open up a dedicated streaming slot. Operating with an empty, revolving bench spot allows you to play the schedule, exploit 4-game weekly slates, and maximize total games played within your league’s transaction limits.

Additionally, if your team happens to be so stacked that all of your late-round flyers hit, proactively pursue 2-for-1 trades. This allows you to consolidate talent into an elite starter while re-opening that essential streaming spot for your playoff run.

Conclusion

Navigating a points league draft isn’t about overcomplicating your strategy. Instead, it is about identifying usage, prioritizing health, and taking advantage of format-specific value drops. By targeting ball-dominant guards and avoiding category-skewed traps, you put yourself in prime position to control your league from day one.

  1. Liked your article simple and to the point as far as sleepers go Murray N.O. (out for almost 2 years) could come back big if the Pels come together and Pods considering that roster and age should get plenty PT

    • Thanks for reading and dropping a comment, George! Really appreciate the support.

Spot on with Dejounte Murray. He’s always been a points league dandy with how much usage he commands and also his ability to fill the stat sheet with steals, rebounds, and assists. If his ADP stays reasonable, he could easily end up as a massive draft-day value. Brandin Podziemski is another fantastic call. With Golden State searching for secondary scoring, he should get plenty of run to comfortably outperform his draft cost.
