Survivor pools are the most fun yet stressful parts of the NFL season. Whether you’re in a small pool with a few friends or amongst thousands fighting for a major cash prize, the goal is the same. Trying to balance staying alive while saving the best teams is a hard task. People come in expecting something simple and quickly realize that “any given Sunday” is both a blessing and a curse.
No matter how your league works, the general strategy is the same. These are my favorite picks for Week 1, with some advice if you’re in a unique pool type.
What!? Your fantasy football league wasn’t hosted on Fantrax last season!? Once you see how Fantrax stacks up to the competition, we think you’ll be singing a different tune this season.
Week 1 NFL Survivor Picks
Jacksonville Jaguars (-8.5) vs Cleveland Browns
The Cleveland Browns will be up here a lot. Whether it’s Deshaun Watson or Shedeur Sanders at QB, they just won’t be a good team. While losing Myles Garrett is a massive blow to Cleveland’s defense, it wouldn’t have changed this pick. The Jaguars, on the other hand, excelled under new HC Liam Coen. Coen led the Jaguars to a 13-4 record, and Trevor Lawrence had his best season since his sophomore year. This is the no-brainer for Week 1, but it also means that a lot of people will pick them in your survivor pool.
The reason the Jaguars are above the Chargers is that they only have one other great matchup on the schedule – Week 12 at home against the Titans. Even if you want to take them in Tennessee, that’s only two other good weeks. The Chargers host the Raiders and Jets, and they visit Miami towards the end of the year. Those seem much safer. If you are in a pool with multiple entries, you might want to split your entries between the Jaguars and Chargers just to diversify your options. The big concern is that most of your pool will be doing the same thing. Sometimes you just have to go with the chalk.
Los Angeles Chargers (-9.5) vs Arizona Cardinals
The Chargers are projected to be the most-picked team this week, along with the Jaguars. Not only do they have the biggest spread of the week, but they are at home against a Cardinals team that went 3-14 last year. While Arizona boasts some of the best skill position players in the league, QB play and defense are still major concerns. The Chargers will be above-average with Justin Herbert at the helm and Jim Harbaugh coaching. This should be a comfortable win for them.
Holding onto the Chargers is also a smart move. Los Angeles still has games against the Raiders, Jets, and Dolphins, making them valuable down the line. While surviving each week is important, you don’t want to find yourself in the middle of a week with no good options because you simply picked the team with the highest spread each time. Balancing future value and survival is the art of survivor pools. The Chargers are still a great pick, but you may be better off holding onto them.
Las Vegas Raiders (-3) vs Miami Dolphins
Brock Bowers is suddenly out, and the line for this game dropped from -3.5 to -3 on most books. That stings, but it’s not enough to put me off too much. Kirk Cousins is a veteran who can still win games. While he may be past his prime, Cousins has not had a losing record as a starter since going 7-9 in 2020. Nobody is expecting the Raiders to shock the world and make the playoffs this year, but they are worth a look this week in deep pools.
Miami could be trotting out the worst roster in the league. Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and Darren Waller are gone. Malik Willis will be the signal caller, but there isn’t much to be excited about. Willis did well in limited action with the Packers but the Dolphins don’t have the same surrounding cast. Miami isn’t exciting on defense either. The team lacks quality starters outside of First-Team All-Pro LB Jordyn Brooks. Last year, the Dolphins defense ranked 25th in EPA/play and 24th in DVOA. They could be even worse in 2026.
The Raiders may not be favored by this much for the rest of the year. You can take them in pools where you have multiple entries, or pools where you have to make multiple picks each week. They are also an interesting option in bigger pools like Circa Survivor where you need to make additional picks on the Thanksgiving and Christmas slates. If your pool offers buybacks, meaning that you can lose and pay an additional amount to re-enter, they are worth a look as well. Just so you know where my money stands, I am in a 500+ entry pool where I am putting three entries on the Chargers, three on the Jaguars, and one on the Raiders.
Pittsburgh Steelers (-3.5) vs Atlanta Falcons
While the Steelers moving on from Mike Tomlin is a big deal, it shouldn’t hurt them much for Week 1. Pittsburgh is favored by over a field goal at home without much turnover on the team. In fact, the offensive line looks good, and the Steelers added Michael Pittman to the receiver room. Aaron Rodgers is not in his prime, but he’s a veteran who knows how to take care of the ball. Rodgers threw 24 TDs to only 7 INTs last season and should continue to be a safe veteran who ekes out close wins.
The Falcons are not an awful team, but Pittsburgh is an interesting pivot in a larger pool with multiple entries. The Steelers only really have one more game you can feel comfortable starting them – Week 6 hosting the Browns. Even then, divisional games can feel much tighter than they should, even when a massive talent gap exists. If you’re feeling frisky or need to use up teams with bad future value early, you could do much worse.

Survivor Picks to Fade
Detroit Lions
While the Lions are 7-point home favorites against the Saints, they are banged up on defense. The Saints are also a tough team to predict. QB Tyler Shough started putting up some great performances at the end of his rookie year, and could play spoiler against some better teams. More importantly, they have great matchups down the line. They face the Jets, Cardinals, Dolphins, and Titans throughout the year. You’re better off leaving them for later in the year. There are better survivor pool picks in Week 1.
