It’s important to know when it’s time to move on. For one reason or another, players simply have a shelf life in fantasy baseball. That doesn’t mean they are no longer a good baseball player, but it’s all about maximizing value.
Regardless of the reason, it’s important to understand when it’s time to move. Not only do you want to maximize performance, but you also want to maximize your return. Let’s take a look at some dynasty shortstop sell-high candidates.
Dynasty Shortstop Sell High Options
Trevor Story, Boston Red Sox
When healthy, Trevor Story is a fantastic option. He has both power and speed, along with a track record of proven success. However, Story is also 33 years old, and in the three seasons from 2022-2024, Story only played a combined 163 games due to injury.
Last season, Story regained his health and played 157 games. With that being said, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the results and success followed. There’s nothing, both from last year and so far in 2026, to suggest that Story won’t remain healthy. However, even if it’s not fair to the veteran, he also hasn’t proven that he can make it through a full season as of late.
It was most interesting to see Story steal a career-high 31 bases last season. Out of anything we saw from the shortstop last season, that’s the biggest concern I have for Story to repeat. He hit .263 last season, while benefiting from a .330 BABIP, but with a .249 xBA, there shouldn’t be much regression. But if you take a few hits away, along with a few stolen bases, the picture begins to change. And then if you factor in even a modest injury, the outlook changes once again.
In fairness to Story, he did have a career-high average exit velocity of 91.4 miles per hour to go along with a solid 9.8% barrel rate. That translated to 25 home runs, 96 RBI, and 91 runs scored last season. With a .170 ISO, Story is no longer the power hitter he was in his prime with the Colorado Rockies, but he’s still a solid contributor.
Let someone else buy into a full repeat and look to get younger.
Xander Bogaerts, San Diego Padres
To be fair, I was never truly in on Xander Bogaerts from a fantasy perspective. Now, that’s really the case as Bogaerts appears to be on the true downslope of his career.
While never truly a power hitter, Bogaerts did have some strong seasons. He peaked at 33 home runs in 2019 and has four seasons of at least 21 home runs. Now, in the last two years, Bogaerts has hit just 11 home runs each. That has come with an ISO of .117 and .128, respectively. Granted, he played in 111 and 136 games in that stretch, but 44 and 53 RBI simply aren’t going to cut it.
The only thing that saved his fantasy value is that Bogaerts stole 13 and then 20 bases. As he enters his age-33 season, is that really something we feel confident in?
While he’s a career .287 hitter, that mark has also dipped to .264 and then .263. That follows along with the overall trend we are seeing from Bogaerts, and I wouldn’t expect to reverse. In fact, that’s in line with his career .263 xBA.
Even when he was in his prime, Bogaerts always struggled to make strong contact. That’s evidenced by his 6.2% career barrel rate, and it’s not getting any better.
Masyn Winn, St. Louis Cardinals
At this point, Masyn Winn is no longer a prospect. Now, he’s simply an established major leaguer. To that list, we can add that Winn is a better baseball player than a fantasy baseball player.
After hitting 15 home runs in 150 games in 2024, Winn dropped to nine home runs last season. He was limited to 129 games thanks to a knee injury, but we also saw his ISO decrease from .148 to .110. It’s become quite clear that Winn isn’t going to make much of an impact at the plate.
He’s a career .250 hitter who, with 20 stolen bases over the past two seasons, isn’t a speed threat either. Between his 4.0% career barrel rate and .376 SLG (.349 xSLG), there isn’t much to see from a fantasy perspective. The Cardinals aren’t expected to have a strong lineup, and this might be your last chance to get some level of return for Winn.
