Where you start is not where you are going to end. We should be resigned to the fact that what we think we know now is not going to carry through by the time we get to December. That statement can be applied to many things across the fantasy football landscape, but we are focused on DSTs here. Everyone obsesses over which running back to draft and who the hot sleeper is, but team defense fails to get the same attention. I’m not here to criticize or say that it should, but we can’t afford to ignore anything when it comes to our fantasy football teams. So, let’s take a look at our top 15 fantasy football defenses for the 2026 NFL season.

Look at the Rankings, and Then the Schedule
The New York Jets might surprise people and have a solid season. If that takes place, a good portion of the credit will go to Geno Smith. But no matter what happens, Smith is not a better quarterback than Joe Burrow or Drake Maye. Sure, things can change, and again anything is possible, but will Smith really finish the season ranked higher than Maye?
That is a very specific example, but the point remains the same. We want the defenses that have a better matchup. In this situation, Smith and Maye are in the same division, but take a look at each division. If you are targeting the Buffalo Bills, yes, you have to face Maye twice, but also Smith and an unknown quantity in Malik Willis twice. Strength of schedule truly matters here. Just be aware that there are going to be some things that might not go according to plan.
Know Your League Settings
Understanding what matters more here is important. Will you truly lose points if your defense allows 30-plus points? Do points not even matter? How do sacks and turnovers count? Is there anything else that is potentially unconventional that could come into play here?
What is the Ceiling
In some leagues, defenses could put up 20-plus points based on the nature of the rules. That could truly decide a week. In other leagues, maybe the average score is half of that on a good week. We don’t want to live by the site projections, but having a reasonable understanding of what we are working with dictates how much available value is out there.
Be Comfortable Streaming
If you end up with a top-five defense, and it works to stick with them with minimal or no risk, then let it ride. In most cases though, it will make more sense to stream based on the matchup. Just don’t go too crazy here either, as we do not want to take unnecessary chances with defenses that simply are not capable of much production. Going after young, turnover-prone quarterbacks and bad offensive lines is a great way to attack this.
Target Havoc
Sometimes we could be burned by a garbage-time touchdown from a points perspective, but that should not be the number one concern. Look for teams that are prone to both allowing sacks and turnovers and teams that are generating them. We can’t predict touchdowns, but turnovers and sacks lead to touchdowns. At the very least, we got points for them.
