MLB Injury Report

Aaron Judge – OF New York Yankees

Another report stated that Judge also has an injury in his ribs, which is causing extra pain in his right shoulder. It’s an unfortunate development, as the slugger had done well to get rid of injury concerns over the years. His extensive injury history from his earliest days felt like a distant memory, but knowing about these internal ailments unfortunately brings back PTSD about him and his fantasy baseball status. All that might just be me getting ahead of myself, expecting the worst here, but suffering multiple injuries in different spots sounds like a recipe for disaster. The Yankees have said that he’s been feeling this for almost four weeks now. For context, since May 5, he is hitting .213 with just three home runs hit.

Max Fried – SP New York Yankees

Not all is doom and gloom here for the Yankees, as it was announced that Fried has been progressing as he should be, all while slowly intensifying his throwing. Once they get the word that he can ramp up even more, he could extend that distance every so often until he hits 180 feet, at which time he will then proceed to mound work. All that being said, he has a long way to go before he returns, and that’s without any potential setbacks.

José Altuve – 2B Houston Astros

Altuve has now fielded groundballs, run the bases, and taken batting practice all within the past few days. There have been no reported setbacks or lingering pain, and both he and the team believe that he won’t require a rehab assignment before returning to the Astros. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen. He is older than most players, and his body shouldn’t be reacting the way that it does. He should need time to heal, and he should require some time on an assignment in order to test out his muscles to ensure all will be okay. None of this makes sense, but then again, I’m not a doctor. How his body reacts to this next round of live BP will likely determine what lies ahead. If I had to pick a date for a return, I wouldn’t play him this week, and I’d instead wait until next week.

Toronto Blue Jays – Team Update

From this report, it would appear that Dylan Cease is in the fast lane on the highway to a return. He has swimmingly and smoothly cleared every hurdle, and now looks poised to make one rehab start before returning to the mound for Toronto. Your buy-low window might be closing fast. As for Max Scherzer, he may also be limited to one start, since at his age it’s best to use up as many pitches as possible (if healthy) in the major leagues. Finally, Shane Bieber remains the opposite of the aforementioned starters, and the team will continue to take things slowly with him.

Athletics – Team Update

A lot of injury news coming out of the A’s clubhouse here. First, Jacob Wilson will finally begin a rehab assignment, as he has been sidelined with a shoulder injury for weeks. The team will likely take things slowly, as they’ve been doing, to ensure that one of their best hitters can get back into the lineup with some security. As for Luis Severino, the fact that he will be re-evaluated in up to six weeks leads me to believe that this is a season-ending injury. Assuming all is fine upon that re-evaluation, he will essentially be starting from scratch and will need an extensive rehab assignment. If all is not fine, he may require surgery. Aaron Civale will start a throwing progression, which is a good sign that things are going to be okay. That said, how his body reacts will be key. These two pitching injuries give credence to the belief that Gage Jump could be up for quite a while, and if he performs well enough, he might stay. Finally, Max Muncy playing through seven innings would be a good sign for a quick return afterward.

Garrett Crochet – SP Boston Red Sox

It’s unclear if he’s fully resolved his inflamed shoulder, which is what originally put him on the Injured List at the end of April. Now, as he was slowly building his way back up to be activated, he was diagnosed with a lat strain, setting him back for a potentially large amount of time. Did he suffer the injury because his shoulder was still cranky and he was figuring out a way to pitch around it? Or did this arise because there’s a deeper issue that hasn’t yet been discovered? Either way, lat injuries are stubborn, and while it’s promising that he is only dealing with a very minor one, it’s quite possible that we don’t see him back for quite some time, given that he will need to be built up.

Edward Cabrera – SP Chicago Cubs

Drake Baldwin – C Atlanta Braves
