Super Flex Leagues in Fantasy Football are ones where you can start two quarterbacks in your lineup. You do not have to, but you can, which raises the value of quarterbacks in these formats. With that being said, having depth at the quarterback position can be difficult in Dynasty. With quarterback values being high in this format, trading for a quarterback can mean paying up and altering your squad. But we can be sneaky about gaining depth, especially if done the right way.
What!? Your fantasy football league wasn’t hosted on Fantrax this season!? Once you see how Fantrax stacks up to the competition, we think you’ll be singing a different tune next season.
Rostering backup quarterbacks in Super Flex Dynasty Fantasy Football Leagues is common, as those backup values rise when given the opportunity due to injury or starter performance. With 32 teams in the NFL, it is important to understand the quarterback landscape and know which backups are worth targeting. I have five backup quarterbacks that you should target for quarterback depth, who can pay off big-time later.
5 Backup QBs to Buy in Super Flex Dynasty Fantasy Football Leagues
1. Mac Jones (49ers)
Mac Jones stepped up big for the 49ers in place of an injured Brock Purdy last season, and had plenty of impactful Fantasy Football weeks:
- Week 2: 26/39, 279 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, 21.8 Fantasy Points (QB9)
- Week 5: 33/49, 342 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, 22.2 Fantasy Points (QB10)
- Week 8: 19/32, 193 passing yards, two passing touchdowns, interception, 19.0 Fantasy Points (QB14)
- Week 10: 33/39, 319 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, interception, 24.1 Fantasy Points (QB6)
Jones also played in place of an injured Trevor Lawrence with the Jaguars back in 2024. Across the final six weeks of that season, he finished three of those games with multiple passing touchdowns and averaged 232.5 passing yards during that span.
Jones was a former starter for the Patriots, with his best season being his rookie year in 2021, where he finished with 3,801 passing yards, 22 passing touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.
Jones will be a Free Agent in 2027, which means he could be the next “Geno Smith”, “Baker Mayfield,” “Sam Darnold,” aka former starters who turn their career around. Mac obviously thrived in San Fran last season, so he is a solid backup to roster as is, but we could be talking about a future starter here come 2027.
2. Drew Allar (Steelers)
The Steelers brought back Aaron Rodgers on a one-year extension worth up to $25 million. The 42-year-old confirmed that this will be his last season. Mason Rudolph will also be a Free Agent in 2027. This could mean a quarterback battle for the Pittsburgh QB1 role between Will Howard (sixth-round selection from the 2025 NFL Draft) and Drew Allar (third-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft).
Allar only played six games in 2025, but threw for 3,327 passing yards and 24 touchdowns the year before for Penn State. Allar passed for 25 touchdowns in 2023 as a sophomore. This is a big-armed quarterback who can push the ball downfield, use his legs, and has had big game experiences as a prospect.
Allar could eventually have a core of wide receivers DK Metcalf, Michael Pittman Jr, Germie Bernard, and tight end Pat Freiermuth as his weapons. The Steelers moved on from Mike Tomlin and pivoted to Mike McCarthy, who has had experience coaching the likes of Aaron Rodgers, Brett Favre, and Dak Prescott. A Fantasy Football bright future is possible.
3. Carson Beck (Cardinals)
The Cardinals selected Carson Beck out of Miami in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft, where Beck’s final game was played in the National Championship. Beck has three years of starting experience, with two of those being at Georgia before his final season in Miami. Beck finished his college career with 11,725 passing yards, 88 passing touchdowns, 32 interceptions, 288 rushing yards, and seven rushing touchdowns. Beck has NFL prototype size, experience playing in plenty of big games, works through his progressions well, and consistently delivers catchable balls. Beck has a quick release but can let it rip when the opportunity presents itself.
Jacoby Brissett is the presumed starter, who will be a Free Agent in 2027. Gardner Minshew is also a veteran rostered player who will be a Free Agent in 2027 as well. Beck has a path to fighting for the Cardinals’ QB1 role in 2027, but I would not rule out him also getting some sort of look in 2026. The Cardinals are projected to be a team that struggles in 2026, so why not “see what they have” in Beck before determining their route for the future.
Jeremiyah Love (RB), Tyler Allgeier (RB), Marvin Harrison Jr. (WR), Michael Wilson (WR), and Trey McBride (TE) make up a solid core. While the team has plenty of holes to fill to be competitive one day, having that set of weapons would be very appealing and can translate well for Fantasy Football in the future.
4. Justin Fields (Chiefs)
Justin Fields signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs worth $11 million. When this news first broke, many eyebrows were lifted as Patrick Mahomes was coming off a torn ACL and LCL. Recent clips suggest that Mahomes is looking ready for Week 1 of 2026, though.
Justin Fields passed for 2,562 yards through 13 games in 2023 for the Bears, rushed for 1,143 yards (the second most ever by a quarterback in a single season) through 15 games in 2022 for the Bears, and averaged 18.4 (#9) / 20.5 (#5) Fantasy PPG in those seasons. Fields played for the Jets in 2025 and the Steelers in 2024. During these two seasons, Fields played 13 games at 90%+ of the snaps, and he finished six of those weeks with 20+ Fantasy Points. Obvious Fantasy Football upside there.
Fields is still just 27 years old and will be a Free Agent in 2027. When he is on the field, he has massive upside for Fantasy Football as a dual-threat quarterback. 2026 may be another year of development, but if Fields gets an opportunity in 2026 or somewhere new in the future, he can be a true Fantasy Football upside asset to have rostered. Many will hate this take, but I love guys who score Fantasy Points and that is what Justin Fields does.
5. Shedeur Sanders (Browns)
As a rookie in 2025, Shedeur Sanders played a majority of seven games for the Browns. His biggest flash came in Week 14 against the Titans, where he threw 23/42 for 364 passing yards, three passing touchdowns, an interception, 29 rushing yards, a rushing touchdown, and 34.46 Fantasy Points. Sanders finished the year 120/212 for 1,400 passing yards, seven passing touchdowns, 10 interceptions, 169 rushing yards, and a rushing touchdown.
Harold Fannin Jr. had a massive rookie year in 2025, which came after a big year for Jerry Jeudy the year before. The Browns made several changes this offseason, which include the hiring of Todd Monken for their Head Coaching position and Travis Switzer for their Offensive Coordinator position. The Browns added wide receivers KC Concepcion (round one) and Denzel Boston (round two), along with the additions of Spencer Fano (round one draft pick), Tytus Howard, Elgton Jenkins, and Zion Johnson to their offensive line.
Deshaun Watson is projected to be the Browns’ starter in 2026, which would make Sanders the backup in an improved situation. Watson has not played more than seven games since 2020 and will also be a Free Agent come the 2027 season. Two big reasons, on top of the Browns improving, to roster Sanders. Sanders could still earn his QB1 role in Cleveland one day, even if he takes a backseat for some or all of 2026.
