MLB Injury Report

Konnor Griffin – SS Pittsburgh Pirates

Interesting note here: Dr. Meister recommended a longer rest period than both Griffin and the team initially anticipated. That suggests this injury may be more serious than originally believed. Additionally, it’s another example of players and teams unintentionally downplaying the severity of an injury. Regardless, Griffin is beginning to throw a baseball lightly is a step in the right direction. If he experiences no setbacks or unusual discomfort afterward, the Pirates will likely allow him to continue progressing through his recovery. However, as mentioned earlier, they plan to take a cautious approach and move slowly throughout the process.

Oneil Cruz – OF Pittsburgh Pirates

Cruz was originally in the lineup, but after further evaluation, the team decided to scratch him so he could receive additional treatment. In addition to the injured hand, he is dealing with some lower-body tightness. It’s difficult to determine whether this represents a setback or if his condition remains largely unchanged from the previous day. Either way, Cruz is not yet ready to return. There has been no indication that this injury will require a trip to the Injured List.

Ronald Acuna Jr. – OF Atlanta Braves

There are several ways to interpret this development. First, it appears the Braves may have dodged a bullet, as some reports indicate that Acuña is currently considered day-to-day. For now, it seems likely that he will avoid a trip to the Injured List, although the results of today’s MRI could change that outlook. Second, this is a recurring injury, and many teams in a similar situation would take a cautious approach to prevent the strain from worsening. That said, Acuña has a history of dealing with minor day-to-day ailments that require only a brief absence. A review of his injury history shows multiple instances in which he missed a game or two before quickly returning to action. That’s simply part of the package with a player of his caliber, and it’s something fantasy managers and Braves fans should keep in mind. My initial expectation is that he will miss the remainder of the series against the White Sox but return at some point during the upcoming series in New York. However, the MRI results will be important to monitor.

Francisco Lindor – SS New York Mets

David Lennon summed it up well in this informative post. It’s worth noting that Lindor’s rehab assignment could be somewhat lengthy, given the amount of time he has missed this season due to multiple injuries. That said, it also wouldn’t be surprising to see him move through the assignment quickly. As a seasoned veteran and consummate professional, Lindor has the experience and preparation habits to expedite the process if he feels healthy and the Mets are comfortable with his progress.

Kansas City Royals – Team Update

Kris Bubic struggled mightily in his return to the mound last night, as his stuff appeared noticeably diminished. He surrendered six runs while recording just four outs, throwing 49 pitches over 1.1 innings of work. It was far from an ideal outing for the left-hander in his first appearance after being sidelined with shoulder fatigue. Meanwhile, Cole Ragans is set to throw off a mound for the first time since landing on the Injured List. This represents an important milestone in his recovery, and if he comes through the session without any issues, it will be another encouraging step toward a return.

Milwaukee Brewers – Team Update

This is big news for the Brewers, who are looking to get several arms back on the mound. First, Brandon Woodruff threw 68 pitches in his latest outing, with mixed results. He worked 3.2 innings and struck out five batters, which are encouraging signs despite the mediocre overall performance. It will be interesting to see whether the Brewers adjust his assignment level for his next rehab start. Meanwhile, Quinn Priester will be looking to salvage what has been a disastrous rehab assignment by delivering a positive outing next week. He has been anything but steady on the mound, allowing hits, walks, and runs at an alarming rate. Given the concerns surrounding thoracic outlet syndrome earlier this season, his struggles are particularly concerning and difficult to ignore. Finally, Logan Henderson’s projected return timeline has shifted to July, which represents a best-case scenario. However, that timeline appears somewhat fragile, as it likely depends on everything progressing smoothly without any setbacks along the way.

Tarik Skubal – SP Detroit Tigers

My instincts, intuition, and expectations have been wrong at every step of the way regarding Skubal’s injury and recovery. The fact that he could potentially return this weekend is nothing short of remarkable. In this case, I’m more than happy to have been wrong.

Baltimore Orioles – Team Update

This situation has the potential to become more impactful than it currently appears. Both Samuel Basallo and Adley Rutschman are dealing with injuries, although each is presently considered minor. Basallo’s situation is particularly interesting, as he is experiencing discomfort caused by bone growth in his wrist. Despite that, he is reportedly expected to play through the pain. Meanwhile, Rutschman missed last night’s game due to hamstring tightness, an issue that Orioles management does not currently believe will require a trip to the Injured List. With the team not scheduled for another off day until Monday, however, this is far from an ideal time to be pushing through injuries.

Cal Raleigh – C Seattle Mariners

The oblique appears to be responding well, but it’s worth waiting a day or two before drawing any firm conclusions. It’s important to remember that, as a catcher, he still needs to handle multiple innings behind the plate and consistently throw the ball with full effort. That said, this is an encouraging sign that he’s feeling better, and there’s a reasonable chance his on-field production could improve as he gets closer to full health. Some reports have suggested a return date of June 16, but that remains speculative at this point.
