Welcome, we’ve been waiting for you. The best way to build a fantasy football team is through an auction. No one ever said auctions were easy, and that’s especially the case if you have never done one. Have no fear though, as we have you covered with some auction beginner tips.
What!? Your fantasy football league wasn’t hosted on Fantrax last season!? Once you see how Fantrax stacks up to the competition, we think you’ll be singing a different tune next season.
Auction Draft Tips for Beginners
Understand Projected Values
We have become so accustomed to rankings. While there is nothing wrong with that, auction leagues do require us to take things a step further. You painstakingly create, obsess, refine, and obsess some more over your 2026 fantasy football rankings. There’s generally a pretty seamless transition from those rankings to ADP (average draft position), and that leads to our draft plan. In an auction, though, things are different.
It’s very important, especially as a newcomer, to understand projected auction values. Take a look at some respected sources, and then compare that to both your rankings and to ADP. This will help you get a feel for how things work in these parts.
Ignore Projected Values
Wait, what? Didn’t I just say that we need to understand projected values and work to conform, or at least line up, your rankings with said values. Of course I did. And I meant it. I mean it is an auction league, so dollar values are going to be the most critical item.
The point here, though, is that we don’t exist in a vacuum. Each and every fantasy football league is its own entity. Once the first player goes off the board, everything changes. With beginner auction players, it’s important not to get hung up on any perceived auction values. Yes, use them as a guide and to help in the planning process, but put them in their place.
Experiment with Different Roster Builds
At the end of the draft, you need to have built a roster that you feel comfortable with. While it might not be perfect, you want as few holes, and as much depth, and upside as possible. There are many ways to achieve this, and practice makes perfect. Of course, any potential scenarios you map out still might not be plausible, but this should get you close. At the very least, experimenting with different roster builds will help you get comfortable from a roster construction standpoint.
Have a Budget
Now that you have an idea of dollar values and how you want to build your roster, it’s time to create a budget. Again, I want to stress that this needs to be a very rough budget. Create ideas, tiers, and a general overall plan, but being too rigid with this budget could backfire. Essentially, you simply want to have a general idea of how you want to spend your money. Don’t get locked into specific players as much as tiers.
Create Multiple Alternatives
All it takes is one rogue agent to throw a crater into your plans. You never know how other team managers are going to react and what their draft plan is going to be, so don’t expect to work in a vacuum. Instead, have multiple alternative plans and ways to spend your auction dollars in place. This is a much better approach than simply blindly overpaying because you were locked into a specific option.
Be Prepared to Adjust
All of the planning and preparation you do is set up for you to be nimble. It’s impossible to predict what 11 other team managers are going to do, so it’s important to be ready for anything. Adjust as needed to an alternative course of action. Most importantly, don’t panic. Go with the flow the draft is following and don’t look back. You’ve done the work, so you should be able to handle anything.
